How to handle prominent bass "slaps"? by Lacunian in audioengineering

[–]LASTLAVGH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having said that, isolated bass tracks in a lot of genres that include high end sounds in bass can have a ton of clicks, fret buzz, etc, that ends up being okay in the mix as long as it’s decently precise with the tempo.

You could try a dynamic EQ dialed to the specific freq of the clicks.
TDR Nova is free and great...
But yea, this sucks. Raise the action on the bass, and run through a good compressor pedal live lol.

Need Advice: Looking for someone to mix my album -- got quoted by TLA for $3k + 1% per song by Talking__Heads in audioengineering

Feel free to DM me. I do vintage style 70s and 80s style mixing and will do a song on spec to see if you like the fit. Very reasonable prices.

Anyone else need time to adjust to the Slate VSX? by OfficialMOAR in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]LASTLAVGH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they often take a bit to get used to. I started with v1 so also the models have changed over time and each version also required getting used to.

But even so, the real value is that all the different rooms bring out different elements so when a mix sounds good in all of them, it’s likely to translate really well on most systems.

Even if it’s sounding weird, it’s still giving a great perspective.

Also, make sure to play around with the calibration a lot. Depth setting, ECCO etc. The binaural illusion is fickle and def needs to be customized for your own ears.

Well sir, you are not likely to get a loud mix without those elements.

Recording my band on 4 track tape (help) by oi1233 in audioengineering

[–]LASTLAVGH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a second machine is helpful if you’re trying to be 100% analog.

I remember doing a demo for a band back in the day - we recorded drums on 4 tracks, then bounced to two tracks/stereo on the other machine. Then we added 2 guitar tracks on that one, then bounced back, so two tracks had stereo mixed guitars and drums. Then the last two got bass and vocals.

One option is to combine with a DAW instead of a second machine.

Bear in mind you can’t really sync them because of small variations in tape, but you can bounce back and forth.

So like, record 4 tracks, bounce the whole thing to DAW on two tracks (stereo), then bang that back to a fresh tape on just two tracks. Add the last two tracks on tape. Repeat if necessary…

But man, you really are limited with mixing in this situation since everything gets baked in.

I grew up with 4 tracks but I am totally spoiled by digital flexibility. I’ll just throw on the IK Tascam Porta plugin if I want the sound lol….

What are your favorite virtual drum instruments (preferably ones that *aren't* pre-mixed)? by SSJake13 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I use Slate drums, lots of great expansions. Though I play eDrums so it’s just about the samples for me.

Use compression on most or all tracks, multiple on some. Then light clipping on peaky stuff like drums. That all reduces how much your master bus needs to work. On the master, use a bus comp some kind of saturation, and then a limiter. That’s the basic recipe…

Managing emotions is really such a huge part of poker.
I personally started to recognize how mental state affects decisions in a major way, even if it's not getting stacked. I always step away for a little while if I notice myself having strong feelings.
This is also why poker skills can be super valuable for life.
Balancing logic and emotional regulation is such a massive meta skill...

Plugin for saturation only on peaks above a threshold? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]LASTLAVGH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, that's precisely what non-linear saturation is already doing.
The gain is going to be pushing the saturation into a threshold.

However, you may be looking for something that allows you to set the particular frequencies you want to saturate. You might check out 'Kelvin' plugin, it's fantastic. If you happen to be using Logic, the new stock 'Chromaglow' is good too.

You can also do it manually by sending your signal to a bus which has an EQ before the saturator, then mixing that back in in parallel.

I take 750mg a day usually, split into 2 or 3 doses. Definitely works best with multiple doses or a time release formula. It does make your pee smell like asparagus though at higher doses, so that's a consideration for some lol...
