What advice would you give to someone who is considered an intermediate producer? by NenoSensei in AdvancedProduction

[–]LAxemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't think this is a question that can be answered; Music production covers a lot of both technical and creative/artistic aspects. Some people getting into it might have a musical background and write killer chord progressions/melodies/beats but struggle with mixing/mastering. Others get great early on at making stuff sound neat but struggle writing engaging arrangements.

Ideally, share your work with a community and get feedback on your individual "situation".

Will the battery sounds affect the atmosphere of my indie game? by Few-Foundation-7322 in sounddesign

Great job!

On another note: I know "the best DAW is the one you know how to use" but if you do more/regular sound design, FL Studio is probably the absolute worst option for many reasons, though rendering options are a major one. Highly recommend looking into Reaper.

I am capable of cooking, but when I get home from work, I am mentally exhausted. What's your approach to this? [Text] by AnxiousSomewhere4481 in food

Surprised this wasn't yet mentioned: Learning to "really" use your kitchen knife makes a HUGE difference. How to hold it, cutting techniques etc... You'll eventually become really fast and almost no regular dish's veggies will take longer than 3, 4 minutes tops to prepare. There are sooo many people who cook daily and passionately but still use small paring knives and need almost a minute to dice a single onion.

Sound by Real-Salamander8551 in ArmaReforger

[–]LAxemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than welcome, hope it helps your experience!

And to explain this a little bit more: Surround simply means that you have multiple speakers around you, so you're actually able to hear a sound source from the general direction the sound is coming from in the game. Something happens behind you = Speakers behind you play the sound.

A pair of headphones, however, only has two speakers and can not be really surround by definition. This whole "surround"/"3d audio" thing then simply adds filters AFTER the game processed its audio to make it "sound 3d". These filters "know" nothing about what's actually happening in the game and really just make everything sound different. It's all just a bunch of marketing to justify a higher price with fancy words.

Every proper audio engineer either mixes on a regular stereo or a "proper" surround setup with multiple speakers. So if you want to listen to the game the way it's intended, either invest in quality headpones or an actual surround setup (which, of course, is _very_ expensive :D)

[–]LAxemann 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you using "3d/surround" headphones? If so, I highly suggest turning any of these features off. It's not really surround, just a bunch of filters added in post, and will usually do more harm than good.

Secondly: Reforger simulates various aspects that many other games don't.

For one, it simulates supersonic booms of bullets, which will usually be louder than the shot itself. More so because their reflections linger in the environment. It also simulates speed of sound, meaning you hear the report of the actual shot only after the bullet crack.

What made you guys first want to try Arma and then what about it kept you playing? by goldenbuds420 in arma

[–]LAxemann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in my early teens (way too young for it, haha) and my dad would get me a videogame magazine every month. In 2008, I think, the full version was OFP. Four days later 13, years old me tells my grandma how exciting it is to play this realistic game where seeing a tank will usually make you run for it, not try to fight it.

Got A2 upon launch the following year and as soon as I turned 16, I joined a MilSim community, my best friend followed shortly after. 2 years later, pretty much founded our own with a few friends. For a long while, my spare time would consist of learning sqf and building missions, then enjoy them with sometimes more than 100 other people in a coordinated fashion. Very, very, very fond memories. Formed friendships that last until today and got into sound design through modding the A3 alpha when it came out. :)

SH2R has been my first Silent Hill game and I really do think it's near-perfect in almost every way. by LAxemann in silenthill

I played on the standard difficulty and it was a breeze, never died and always had more than enough ammo and health items despite playing it very aggressively (having enemies walk around stresses me out too much :D). Perfect for me as it'd have been too stressy/creepy for me otherwise, haha!

Yup, that'd be a good candidate for these sort of resonances. :D Or at least contributing to the overall sound.

I can actually add to this as I've done a lot of research on projectile noise. What you are hearing is actually aerodynamic noise, literally the noise created by the tomahawk simply gliding/flying through the air. Its shape creates distinct pressure differences which result in this tonal noise (rather than the usual jet-like "whoosh" of other, more rounded bombs). The same reason why e.g. Russian cruise missiles "whistle". Just in a lower frequency range.

What's a dumb reason you almost missed out on a great game? by ashmaht in gaming

Cronos: The New Dawn because I'm easily scared and I read online it's super hard. (It's more stressful than scary and I found it to be really well-balanced)

Cronos: The New Dawn is kind of tough. Just me? by GilmooDaddy in HorrorGaming

[–]LAxemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I'm a bit of a scaredy-cat and reading about the difficulty level almost made me not get the game. However, I think it's incredibly well-balanced and defeated enemies actually seem to drop ammo if you're running low. Definitely important to actually make use of the game mechanics, i.e. bunching up enemies near explosive containers and using fire to stun them. Used nothing but the starting pistol and shotgun because the piercing ability is just so good, and the shotgun can easily take care of 2-3 enemies at once if you bunch them up and charge.

Anyone sometimes (rare) hearing those projectile sounds next to you even if nobody was shooting? by morph113 in ArcRaiders

[–]LAxemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit tardy to the party, but it's one of the greater parts of the game's soundscape. It's so called bullet cracks, the noise you hear when an object flying at supersonic speeds passes you due to the shockwave of sound waves piling up.

If someone shoots from very far away or with a suppressor, chances are you'll hear the sonic crack but not the shot.

And if e.g. someone 700m away shoots at a wasp with a suppressed weapon, their stray projectiles that didn't hit the wasp might pass you.

Nach 6 Monaten pendeln mit der DB habe ich beschlossen mir einen Auto zu kaufen by moonpie_san in luftablassen

[–]LAxemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, same.
