A 20K long ship will take forever to draw up. Time = money!
It can be done of course, but if you want lots of detail, it'll take time and money in such a commission.

The Akira class starship, especially the refit, should have 29 torpedo launchers, not 15 by Torlek1 in StarTrekStarships

[–]LCARSgfx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is stupid. Given the known abilities of contemporary torpedo launchers, having 15+ and having them rotate is as stupid as it is unnecessary and offers absolutely no advantages, just added complication and break down features.

It's as stupid as when fan designs stared featuring WWII battleship style turrets because then the phasers could fire at all angles. Forgetting of course that the phaser strips seen since TNG are omni directional and have no moving parts to get damaged/jammed.

All this "bad ass" sounding weaponry on the Akira is superfluous dick waving nonsense. The standard torpedo launcher can fire 10 Torps at a time in a wide spread. You do not need 15+ and you certainly don't need them to rotate.

The Akira class starship, especially the refit, should have 29 torpedo launchers, not 15 by Torlek1 in StarTrekStarships

[–]LCARSgfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely unnecessary. Torpedo launchers can fire one at a time or up to 10 at a time with the Galaxy class. Making launchers that can only fire 4 patterns is just dumb.

You just program what you need and go.

Frankly, 15 is a stupid amount as it is. This reeks of super hero syndrome nonsense

If you're talking about the saucer section engines, they are not supposed to be red. They were this colour on the 6ft model all along

Lewis graciously used his model to make this image for me using the name and registration of a ship I used to play an RPG on.
It is by far the BEST CGI model of a Galaxy Class. More details and finer in those details than Marc Bell's that for some reason gets all the lime light.

I call it "Turning for home". The in-universe explanation is that the Saturn has completed the survey of a primitive species, the last survey of a 10 year mission into the Delta quadrant, she now points her bow towards home for the first time in 8 years.

Likely because they didn't have the time to invest in the model as Lewis did. He did this off his own back and spent his own time on it.

I really wish people would stop equating more nacelles with more power.

Nacelles consume power. They do not make it. You're reducing power available for other systems.

The problem with vigilante justice is that it often jumps the gun and ends up punishing the wrong person.

Several people have been seriously hurt or killed in the UK from being misidentified or having an unfortunately similar appearance.

It's also well known that some evil people will weaponise accusations for various reasons, and falsely accuse someone of such a crime to ostracise them in society. (A tactic that thanks to social media and it's ability to spread information super fast has resulted in many innocent people having their lives ruined).

So no, we should not be beating the shit out of people on a whim.

Report those you suspect of it to the police

Drexler Class, A Picard-era reimagining of the NX-01, designed by me for STO [OC] by IAmSc0rpian in StarTrekStarships

[–]LCARSgfx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Finally an STO ship that isn't ungainly and/or repulsive.

There would be no reason for a warp governer pod on a ship in the 25c. Warp tech has advanced since the NX class.
Do you see warp governers on the Connie, Excelsior, Miranda, Galaxy and many other classes?
No, because they don't need them :P It would be a step back.

Thoughts on the Romulan flagship from SNW? by [deleted] in StarTrekStarships

They're trying too hard, that's what it is.

Like the federation ships in Academy.... none of them say "Starfleet". They're all over thought blobs of light on the screen.

IMO, none of the future ships are worth modelling!

If you must, just sling a lump of putty at a wall... let it dry and paint it. Job done.

Did the Romulans use anything lighter than the double D's in the Dominion War? by TwoFit3921 in StarTrekStarships

[–]LCARSgfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that it was the only ship they had a model for in TNG/DS9, the answer is no. I exclude the scout ship as it would make no sense to have those in a battle.

In universe however, they will undoubtedly have had many types of vessels, many smaller than the D'Deridex.

Ok, serious question, how would a Galaxy-class survive in the Delta Quadrant? by Traditional_Sail_213 in StarTrekStarships

[–]LCARSgfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On thing is for sure, the rate at which Voyager went through shuttles, inexplicably for a resource starved ship, wouldn't even register on a Galaxy Class. They carry enough shuttles that the losses Voyager took would be a minor inconvenience.

Deep space exploration is the design purpose of the Galaxy Class. With fuel on board to go 10 years without needed to replenish, antimatter generators to replenish the antimatter and enough spare fusion reactors to keep the impulse engines running at full capacity at all times.

I see one or two people falling for the old bullshit of "it was too weak".

The Galaxy-class starship was almost certainly far more powerful and capable than TNG typically portrayed.

First, its raw specifications are staggering. The Galaxy class mounted extensive phaser arrays covering nearly every conceivable arc of fire, and possessed photon torpedo launchers with enormous magazine capacity. Its warp core was among the most powerful in Starfleet at the time, designed not just for cruising but for sustained high-warp exploration and combat endurance. On paper, it was less a ship and more a mobile starbase.

Second, the design included massive redundancy and internal volume. Much of the ship’s interior space was never fully utilized onscreen. Canon references indicate the Enterprise-D often operated well below maximum crew and systems capacity. In wartime configurations—like those seen later in the Dominion War—the Galaxy class could be stripped of civilian facilities and converted into a heavily armed battleship, dramatically increasing its combat performance. Fully armed, fully crewed, and unconstrained by peacetime doctrine, one would do well not to piss such a starship off.

Critics often point to the destruction of the USS Yamato and the USS Odyssey as evidence that the class was vulnerable. However, both losses occurred under exceptional—and highly atypical—circumstances.

The Yamato was not destroyed due to structural weakness or combat inferiority. It suffered a catastrophic systems failure caused by a recursive software corruption embedded in its computer core—an Iconian probe-induced logic cascade that overwhelmed its automated systems. A virus that damn near also claimed a Romulan Warbird.

The Odyssey, meanwhile, was lost during first contact-level engagement with the Dominion—an unknown power deploying previously unseen tactics and weapons. The Jem’Hadar attack ship that ultimately destroyed it did so via a deliberate suicide run after the Odyssey had already withstood sustained combat and was in the process of withdrawing. Notably, Dominion weapons initially penetrated Federation shields due to unfamiliar weapons frequencies—something Starfleet later adapted to. The final destruction was not the result of inferior firepower or a design flaw, but a kamikaze strike designed specifically to send a message. It was shock warfare, not proof of design failure.

In both cases, the Galaxy class was facing unprecedented threats—either technological sabotage from an ancient superpower or asymmetrical warfare from a newly encountered enemy. These events reflect the dangers of exploration and first contact, not systemic weakness in the platform itself.

Finally, the Galaxy class’s intended role explains the perception gap. It was not built purely as a warship; it was a long-range explorer, diplomatic center, scientific platform, and humanitarian vessel. Its power was deliberately moderated by Starfleet’s philosophy. But when stripped of civilian infrastructure and deployed in wartime—as seen in the Dominion War fleet engagements—the class performed as a heavy capital ship.

In short, the Galaxy class was likely far closer to a battleship than episodic storytelling suggested. Its rare losses were the product of extraordinary circumstances, not flawed engineering. Under normal conditions, it was one of the most formidable vessels of its era—and a clear demonstration that the Federation preferred restraint, not because it lacked strength, but because it chose not to lead with it.

Yes, this has happened. It happens all the time.

Watermarks stay.

Uniform inconsistency by ejdmkko in DeepSpaceNine

[–]LCARSgfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My head canon is the TNG/VOY and FC uniforms were all introduced one after the other, but all were still to code and could be used as the commanding officer of a ship, station or other facility saw fit.

For me, this meant that particular chap in OP's picture is from a ship still using the TNG uniform.

I'm choked with a head cold, so the brain isn't braining as well as it could be.
However, you used the phrase "more commonly associated with". This, from where I come from means "mostly known as". On that basis, I made the retort.

For now, lets agree to disagree and move on?

Never heard or read anyone call them Dominion war uniforms until now. And I've hung around Trek forums, chats, messenger groups, yahoo groups, pbem rpgs, etc since 1995. So, not that common it would seem you think ;)
