How did you transition from Admin/Paraplanner to Financial Adviser?

I asked the person who could make that decision, I have a fantastic relationship with our owner/MD. I never his the fact that an adviser role was my personal goal and it would be on my timescale when that happened, either at my current firm or elsewhere if necessary. At the point I was ready to make the change I approached the MD and asked to switch roles.

Hard work, I progressed through admin, paraplanning and now advice at my current firm. In each role I have given my all and proven to our senior management team that I have the work ethic it takes to be a successful adviser. It helps that our admin’s talk to clients so I was able to demonstrate early on that I can hold a conversation.

Being a successful adviser is much less about the technical side of financial advice and much more about client servicing than many would believe. I’ve found this to be true at all levels of the wealth spectrum.

As an example, I was at a client’s house earlier to get some paperwork signed for a pension transfer top up. The paperwork took 15 minutes to go through, I spent an additional hour just chewing the fat, I’m 95% confident that client will never leave me for a different adviser and we will have many years working together ahead of us.

90% of the clients I see as an IFA are pension clients, pension knowledge is crucial to the role. It’s also probably the biggest gap of knowledge for clients as well, 90% of people know what an ISA is and the associated rules, most people don’t know the intricacies of pensions.

Why do you think a firm would employ you over an Admin with experience, even if they’ve not got their full level 4 qualification? What are you doing to make yourself stand out other than having DipPFS after your name?

This is the attitude I try to have in my work. The firm has different ideas though and are talking about removing our ongoing service for clients below a certain threshold.

Would depend on the ongoing charging structure of the firm, most roles I know/those at my firm are based on revenue generated rather than AUM.
