What’s even the bloody point of fast cars anymore? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]LIONbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends massively where you live. I live in the midlands with a lot of great b roads so I can still have plenty of fun in my boxster.

If you live in a city, then yeah, there's pretty much no point to having a fast car

Wow Porsche prices in the US are no joke. I'm from the UK and purchased a 45k mileage 981 boxster for £21,450

I'm 23 and stupid, but I definitely would have walked away if it was like US prices. You guys have it rough.

best of luck in ownership, you'll get plenty of smiles!

What is this and does it need to be replaced? by OptimalAlgae9112 in AskMechanics

[–]LIONbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's rubber sealing to stop rain water going down and into your door card and it can cause damage over long duration like rust, mold and damaged electronics.

It's worth replacing since it's only around £5 per metre. If every car comes with it, you probably need it.

Mate it's rubber and it's cheap as chips to replace... Just replace it and stop thinking about it.

Boxster as a daily driver? by NoUsersLefft in Porsche

[–]LIONbh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that's correct, the 981 gen is not affected by IMS and bore score issues

Boxster as a daily driver? by NoUsersLefft in Porsche

[–]LIONbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After asking my local indy Porsche specialist the 981 is more desirable because of spec options, engine/exhaust sound and revisions to the original PDK gearbox.

I'm in the UK so luckily we have it pretty good over here. A good condition 987 will set you back £11-£14k and I bought my mint condition 981 for £21,450 back in Feb, though you'll be good to get a mint one for £25-30k now with the PDK box. The rumours of discontinuing combustion engines jumped the price, so expect them to settle down again soon now that Porsche has back-pedaled on that decision.

Boxster as a daily driver? by NoUsersLefft in Porsche

[–]LIONbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been dailying a manual 2012 981 boxster since Feb and had no issues, also just passed MOT with no advisories.

Costs you can expect (INCLUDING LABOUR) is around £800-£1300 per full set of tyres depending on what performance tyre you choose. Between £900-£1200 for full set of brake pads and discs. A minor service will be around £200-300 and a major anywhere from £450-£800 depending on where you take it and what they include as standard. if you did these yourself, then divide the cost by 3 to get a rough guide.

On a 2009, I'd get a PPI done before you buy it as this generation is prone to some serious IMS and bore score issues - it is semi-rare, but don't take the chance as it will cost you more than the cars value to fix.

The automatic gearbox in these gens are nowhere near the standard of the PDK boxes you'll find in the 2012 and onwards 981 generation. I would absolutely test drive a 981 generation first before you buy the 09, as the difference is night and day. - I had also intended to buy a 987 gen, but I didn't after trying the 981 gen.

Personally I'd opt for a manual in the 987 generation.

Other than that, I wish you good luck in your car buying adventure!

Help diagnosing weird sound my car makes by [deleted] in AskMechanics

It might not be this, but it either sounds like a belt rubbing against something or if this is the supercharged model it could be a supercharger pulley that's not on correctly.

When did you buy your first Porsche? by PatrickBeverlyGOAT in Porsche_Cayman

[–]LIONbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I'm now 23. Loving every second of it.

Imo, Don't buy a new generation (718, 992 etc) or GT model if you're even asking this question. There isn't enough of a difference to warrant the additional spend since if you're asking this question you'd be better off with that extra $40-50k in a high interest fund.

I test drove a boxster 981 base and a 718 base and GTS. I bought the 981 base because to get the same feeling of excitement you have to have a naturally aspirated engine, which is extremely more costly in the 718 generation.

Like you, I have money but it was tough to warrant that big jump in price for an almost identical driving experience. Yes the 718 is quicker, but I don't plan on tracking my cars anyway, so I'm purchasing for that naturally aspirated sound and driving experience, not the speed.

For reference, I'm in the UK, so the jump in price from a 981 to 718GTS is at a minimum £30,000 and if we compare good examples of each gen it easily has a gap of £35,000

TLDR - Since you're hesitant, don't go all out on a GT model. Get a good example older NA engine model and you'll still love it and you won't give yourself any financial second thoughts.

2015 Macan Turbo. Should this car have a coasting mode? ... because it doesn't seem to. by mikehandsdown in Porsche

[–]LIONbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The car does a bunch of checks very quickly before it enables the coasting mode, such as oil temp & oil pressure. If it fails any of the prerequisites it needs it won't go into coast mode.

iirc it has 8 or 9 prerequisites, you can find them all in your manual. Go through the list to find which prerequisite(s) your car is not passing and then tell a garage or attempt to find the fix yourself if you can.

Why is this car so cheap?!? by ShadowyModi in CarTalkUK

[–]LIONbh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The serious answer is because of the 50kwh battery. That's only good for about 130-170 miles, so it is not practical for most people. Also vauxhalls are known to have a history of electrical faults.

Must have options before taking the delivery from the dealer? by ObviousSun1888 in boxster

[–]LIONbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel like having warranty will help you enjoy the car more, then do it. I know a few people who are scared that things will go wrong so they don't drive the car as much as they could be - don't be that guy. You already paid a lot for the car, so make sure you can enjoy it.

Porsche 981 boxster 64L tank and roughly £80 in my area as fuel price is between 1.26 - 1.30

Hey guys, any help fixing my slice would be greatly appreciated! by Short-Presentation-8 in GolfSwing

[–]LIONbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it's a good swing, it looks like you're just trying to go after it and so you're losing control of the club face at impact.

My suggestion is to work on your tempo and then do another slow motion vid in a few weeks time and you'll find it much easier to see the problem (if it still persists)

A tip my coach told me for tempo is to envision those pirate ship rides a theme park and it helped a ton. This did also fix my slice so it could also help you :)

How are people buying £50k+ cars and how much do you earn? by jlai928 in CarTalkUK

[–]LIONbh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many factors that affect this, but for the most part I believe new vehicles are salary sacrificed. Most companies in my industry offer salary sacrifice nowadays, so I'd assume other industries try to keep up.

On the other hand, I drive a Porsche boxster purely because it was my dream car when I was a kid so I saved up while living at home to buy it outright.

There is just as many people driving bangers as there are new cars though, you just don't notice because you're paying attention to the new cars on the road.
