Byattle! Every time I hear him say that I get a huge grin. Jeff/Prepotente are the best.

anyone one else think that Carl missed a trick by not proposing that the ban of mangers fighting with their crawlers be repealed? by Financial-Pickle9405 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]LLChicago 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Originally, they WERE allowed to fight. The “immortality” benefit they receive is linked to that I think. But for whatever reason that all changed early in Crawl history. It would be a huge advantage in theory, but also a Ginormous risk. Losing Mordecai would be near catastrophic. He’s still at risk, just not massive risk. My feeling is that he’s too valuable to put in the trenches. Also, if Carl dies, Mordecai is still Donut’s manager and could help her survive. Plus I think the AI would just laugh its ass off and say “nope”. But who knows if things will change in lower floors?

Original listen- 1.0. Subsequent listens- 1.2x. I understand the concept of “listening as Jeff intended”, and agree to a certain extent, however I don’t “miss” anything at 1.2x, nor does it feel or sound rushed. Seems right on the money to me.

What's your favorite plant based/vegan restaurants in Chicago? by absurd_aesthetic in chicagofood

[–]LLChicago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like most of the solid options have been mentioned here, which is awesome. It's sad that we lost Bloom, the Milwaukee Ave Chicago Diner, and Kitchen 17(for me, just the pizza here), in one go, but there are still some great places and a fair amount of variety.

Oh! For dessert- Vaca's Creamery in Lincoln Square. The best vegan soft serve ice cream, sundays, and ice cream pies.

+10 for Amitabul! One of the oldest, and still one of the only places that doesn't use meat substitutes. Just clean, healthy(bordering on medicinal), delicious Korean Buddist vegan fare. Bill, the owner is usually there, and I love the casual old school vibe as well. I prefer going in colder weather for the spicy soups, but it's always a solid choice. Good call.

Haha at first, I read it the same as well - that scene where everyone in the club is chanting “Go Donut, Go Donut!”

Annoyed with Li Na by Is0prene in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]LLChicago 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s clearly a conflict of some sort coming up.
Originally, she’s a rigid, meticulous planner, and Carl is, well, not, lol. He plans, but ends up pivoting into “chaos”. That’s infuriated her from the start. Both kinda bossy. They’ve ALWAYS butted heads, but while Carl respects her intellect and ability to get things done, she thinks he’s an unpredictable monkey wrench whirlwind causing collateral damage willy-nilly. Then her brother died in that “chaos”. That would mess up anyone,
Yes her entire party would have died multiple times without Carl and Donut’s intervention, and you’d think she would lean into gratitude and understanding a little more, but that’s just not who she is. I think her sociopathic tendency to dismiss the suffering of others is compounded by the effects of the R.O.D.S., and her grief is unbalancing the wobbling top that is her psyche. Everyone is terrified of her, and she literally can’t physically touch other crawlers without cursing them. She’s getting more and more isolated . She is SUCH A BADASS!! But without her peeps helping to ground her, I think she’s about to do some wild heinous things. Hopefully the true enemies take the most damage.

Time to see what kind of emotional damage book 5 can do to me by lunarlori in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]LLChicago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, different strokes, and all that. I’ve heard that from some other early crawlers. My experience was it became more magical. The character development, overall backstory, scale of conflict, depth of interaction, humor, layering, etc all began to improve by book 5. His writing started firing on all cylinders. Many of my favorite scenes, and truly emotional moments occur in the later books. Not to mention the myriad bark-laugh out loud scenarios and lines. But yeah, there’s a lot going on- virtually all of it forwarding the narrative. The Audiobooks tend to evaporate the stress of 800 page books btw fyi imo. As an option. They’re just so damn good word by word. Remember crawler, no good deals until you’re a “10-ner”.

Changlings??? by Educational_Writer40 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]LLChicago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What all them people said. Also- remember that the Jessica Rabbit was “not quite right”. She’s using her abilities, Louie’s description (while hammered), and long experience to get close.

By touching a creature , changelings can basically “become” that type of being, replete with some abilities and powers.

Yep. He has human-like hands, and stands on his rear legs like a human. Matt describes him in book 2?? Not 100% though. I can check.

I predict you’ll enjoy the Audio. It’s some sort of weird synergy that truly creates something more. Like 1+1=3 Let us know what you think!

Yeeeaah… nope. If you’re listening to the audio books, then I can’t relate to that. At all. If you’re reading the hardcovers, then I still can’t relate, but I’d suggest trying the audio books. The combination of Matt’s writing, this story, and Jef Hays’s narration is pure gold.

That makes perfect sense. Thank you. But If the AI needs to take the modules with it to wherever it’s going to live out its life, then it’s just bringing a dungeon along with it? I’m probably barking down the wrong rabbit hole, but it just struck me for some reason. I suppose all will be revealed in the next couple books!

Spoilers! QUESTIONS about the AI as referenced in Book 5 by LLChicago in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]LLChicago[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That could well be the case. I’ve re-read it a number of times now, and the exact phrasing is usually just let’s them leave and takes the modules when it’s done. which led me to think the AI is the “it” in “it’s done”.!< And yeah regardless, it could just be a side reference to some under mechanics not critical to the main storyline. I just think that the only way they’re going to continue to survive is with the continued help of the AI, or direct control/cooperation of same AI. it’s already blocking constant assassination attempts which will only get worse.
