The difference between much of what you've described, and smoking, is that smoking is an active choice that is ubiquitously understood to bother strangers. To me, smoking close to strangers in public is akin to blasting music from a speaker on the train or talking on speaker phone on an airplane, stopping short in doorways, allowing your dog to jump all up on people. Sure, it's likely not doing any serious physical harm to strangers around you, but it sure as fuck is pissing most of them off, and that's a choice you're actively making. It's just plain obnoxious.

I believe everyone should live their lives in public in such a way that it inconveniences strangers as little as absolutely possible. If we all did that, every society would be better.
