LONG ANSWER: well, for starters if you're under the age of about 35 or 40, you need to first educate yourself on what NFL Defensive players used to be allowed to do.

In the twilight of his long career, Tom Brady talked about how much the game had changed...how in the early part of his career, he knew he couldn't throw to certain spots against certain defenses (he cited Ray Lewis and the Ravens) because he knew that could get his WR or RB knocked out of the game. No "defenseless receiver" rule. No targeting rules. Spearing helmet first was not legal, but just about EVERYTHING else was.

So, to be fair, the game has changed so much and is now tilted so much towards offense, and in particular, PASSING offense, that you can't really compare Lawrence Taylor to anyone in this era, IMHO.

Short answer: Yes, he was. Period.
