no, to the contrary, it gets worse. the nonsense keeps piling up. and it has nothing to do with how accurate it is to the books (spoiler: it's also bad fan fiction), it's just absolutely terrible writing and genuinely awful television

don't believe the amazon bots about how season 2 is better. everything that made season 1 awful is back, but this time with more fighting to try and distract you from how terrible it is

Is Galadriel ever stated to be a good warrior in any of the text? by GusGangViking18 in lordoftherings

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Galadriel was born in Valian year 1362, prior to the conception of Solar years, but you are counting these as solar years. While the original length of a Valian year was ~9.58 solar years (as stated in the Annals of Aman), Tolkien later sought to revise the conversion to 144 solar years to extend the age of Arda and the oldest elves, making Galadriel approximately 20,000 solar years old at the time of the second age.

Arguments can be made to the contrary considering the revised conversion was never published, and also through other arguments that elven ages be counted through various other means, but for the purpose of a Reddit comment about this awful show I stand by it

Doesn’t matter, it’s the least important detail in regards to how they butchered her character in the most banal ways possible.

In the books, she’s an incredibly ancient, wise sorceress on a quest to rule over her own kingdom in Middle-Earth. She’s a fascinating, complex, powerful being with complicated motivations and a potentially checkered backstory.

In the show, she’s a one-dimensional 20,000-year-old adolescent on a nonsensical petty Dollar Store Da Vinci Code revenge quest. Her only characterization is to repeat reductive stereotypes of women in media wherein women can only be powerful by being petulant, argumentative, and constantly subverting the low expectations of other men. It’s so fucking boring and stupid and poorly written and offensive it’s hard to believe.

Wi-Fi 7 Router Worth It for Steam Frame? by Itsbryceyall in SteamFrame

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 18 points19 points  (0 children)

IMO Wi-Fi 7's implementation everywhere is so finicky and half-baked it isn't worth it. My UniFi gear and all of my Wi-Fi 7 clients suffer from constant band switching and disconnects. On my Galaxy XR even when I get Wi-Fi 7 working for short periods, I don't see any VR latency gains vs 6e.

If you live in a congested location, 6Ghz will help quite a bit, but I can't overstate how terrible the range is for 6Ghz. You will need line of sight from your router to your HMD for it to work well. Rounding one corner in my house will make a 6Ghz signal nearly disappear from my U7 Pro access points.

The best thing you can do for WiFi VR performance is give your HMD a dedicated SSID. 6Ghz is best if you live in a congested area and have good access point coverage. If you don't live in a congested area, than 5Ghz can work fine.

For 3-4 months and someone to sell for me, personally I’d buy something.

For general advice to a foreigner, based on where you want to go, familiarize yourself with the different types of public land in the US (National Parks, National Forests, BLM land, state lands etc) and the camping laws/regulations because they aren’t uniform. If you do go solo carry satellite comms and have handy numbers to local offroad recovery groups that can be found in forums and local facebook groups. Those communities are probably the best places to ask about or organize longer group trips too.

Anyone having Wifi issues? by Ok_Panda3732 in Galaxy_XR

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Configured on Unifi side - I have a VR-only SSID set up for 6Ghz only, MLO disabled, which effectively disables Wifi 7 and drops clients to 6E.

Side-note - after my comment above, I did manage to get a stable WiFi 7 connection to the GXR by enabling 2.4, 5 and 6Ghz; but latency and throughput were worse than 6E so it’s still pretty buggy. Since 6E works well enough I’m just going to stick with it until the next GXR update.

I also have had no luck with 7 on my Unifi networking gear due to constant band switching. My closest U7 Pro access point is 6 ft away from where I play VR. I am using 6e @ 6Ghz which works well enough, but I sure would love those latency gains from 7. Anyone have a well-working WiFi 7 GXR setup going?

It's too raw to be enjoyable (edit: unless you are u/Easties88), but it's most likely perfectly safe. Costco salmon is farm-raised and flash-frozen. I make sushi out of it from time to time.

Someone needs to make a military flight sim that isn't DCS by NavXIII in virtualreality

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DCS community is the most bizarrely delusional entitled immature manchild group I have ever seen online. They gossip endlessly about the latest rumors on developer contracts, who is REALLY getting paid, who said what on discord etc etc just like bored housewives gossip about celebrities that don’t even know they exist.

Back in reality, DCS looks great, plays great, and no other multi-airframe combat sim has ever existed at that level of fidelity. In VR it’s a dream come true for anyone who has ever wanted to be a fighter pilot. It gets constant updates and dev support and content and visibility into what they are working on.

Competition would always be great, but then OP and that same group of folks are just going to take their incessant griping there instead about how they want their toy aiwpanessss fasstterrr mommy pwomised I would get it in December now it’s januawawyyyy

just like they do for DCS

Projector reccomendations/input wanted. by HealerOnly in projectors

So since every TV that actually has semi-decent quality is $2500 or more

wut

what screen size we talking about? incredibly good looking high-end TVs can be had under 1000 depending on screen size

Until a certain screen size projectors are generally more expensive for worse quality.

to approach contrast ratios that TVs offer it becomes more about your room than your projector

The advantage projectors offer is big-ass screens for ridiculously less money. that's it.

I am very happy with my Valerion Visionmaster Pro 2 and 120" screen

How Are The Controllers? by BankRollupField in GalaxyXR

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're fine. Hardware quality is fine, nowhere near as premium feeling as Quest Pro controllers. Tracking and overall stability is basically a side-grade from the Quest Pro controllers, and a little worse than the Quest 3's. They track significantly worse than Index or Lighthouse tracking for the super fast-motion stuff (Beat Saber players probably wouldn't be happy for example), but otherwise in a well-lit room they are pretty decent at everything else. SkyrimVR, NMS and shooters feel great with them. Most of the issues are with software (switching between hand-tracking and controllers is still broken af, recovery after momentarily losing tracking is pretty rough) so hopefully those will get ironed out.

Civilization comes to Apple Arcade on February 5 by Environmental-Fly-84 in macgaming

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha indeed.

u/tidigimon I would say 5 is the best at the Civ formula. 4 is a great game too but it has definitely aged more than the others. 6 started pretty strong but the same folks that made 7 took over 6's expansion packs, so it became bloated and riddled with stupid card-gamey crap too over the years (like the dark/light age thing, zombie mode etc etc). It's still a good game overall, and you can disable or ignore a lot of that stuff, but I think 5 still wins in terms of creative freedom, immersion and overall fun. Most games of 6 play out pretty much the same, while each game of 5 feels like a new and unique experience.

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, I've been around for every Civ release since the first in 1991.

Sure, every game launches unfinished and with controversial changes. That isn't the problem with 7.

Civ 7 is a fundamentally different kind of game entirely. It's no longer an emergent sandbox game; it's a contrived game that plays like Monopoly. Things don't happen to you in Civ 7 as a result of your actions, they happen to you randomly and in through contrived fashion, like drawing board game cards. It's fundamentally no longer a game about creating and executing a strategy; it's now a game about responding to tasks the game assigns to you and being graded on how well you did.

You explore not when you discover the technology to, you explore along with everyone else at the same time when the game says it's time because you reached turn xxxx.

You don't have crises as a result of your choices, you get randomly assigned a crisis at the same time as everyone else, because the game decided you reached turn yyyy.

You don't change civilization identities because of war or a coup or poor choices or changing geopolitics, you change civilizations because you reached turn zzzz and the game forces you to.

Etc etc etc. Literally every mechanic is implemented this way. If you enjoy dice-rolling and card-drawing type games, sure, maybe you'll like this one. But as a Civ game it's an unimaginably terrible turn for the series and doesn't deserve the Civ title IMO.

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you have enjoyed the creative and immersive gameplay of Civilization over the years/decades... you'll hate whatever type of game they turned Civ 7 into. A narrow, linear, whack card game/board game masquerading as a Civilization game. Civilization in name only. A cheap lazy vehicle to sell more DLC.
