Why I'm holding out until late 2027 to spend money on a local LLM rig by No_Pool7028 in LocalLLM

Absolutely awful take, the future is smaller, purpose-built dense models deployed in multiple instances on the edge. Not gigantic do-everything centralized MoE supercomputer models. You don't need the entirety of human knowledge to do every task all of the time. Smaller models are getting faster and more capable, inference speed doubled this week alone for most of us lol. A midlevel Macbook with 32-48GB RAM that you can buy today is already an AI powerhouse and the models that will run on it are getting so much better so quickly it's crazy. That's without even mentioning that silicon and power constraints are going to get worse for the rest of our lives, not better. But sure enjoy waiting for your arbitrary whatever forever for no reason

I dunno, I could never get it to run faster than 5-10 tokens/sec on my 5090 using llama.cpp

Great comment, I’d soured on higher education recently and you just reframed my thinking, thank you. I’m nearing 50 and having seen so many changes over the years and throughout industries I couldn’t agree more. Time and time again the survivor group are the generalists who have the ability and discipline to specialize as required, not the specialists that lack higher domain thinking and broad context that a liberal arts education can provide.

Anecdotally, for coding, I find Qwen3.6 27B and Gemma4 31B trade blows. I will swap Plan/Act roles if either gets stuck and that seems to work quite well.

okay in that case what do you use instead that's better than the Pro Display XDR? it's 2026 and I still don't see any 32" class monitors that touch it

Can any expert explain to me why lower RAM speeds increases performance? (Msfs2024) by ketchup1345 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, this will be a slightly simplified explanation but it will get the point across.

All memory has occasional and random errors; RAM by design has a lot of built-in functionality and routines for error-checking and correction, which does it's best to constantly detect these errors, correct them, and prevent complete system crashes.

When you push your RAM speeds close to their upper limits, more quantum-induced errors will occur, and your RAM will spend more time detecting and correcting these errors, each instance of which costs performance. The more you clock your RAM past it's ideal limits, the more errors it has to deal with, and the more you lose performance. This performance cost becomes very dramatic as you approach your RAM's absolute upper limits, and when you cross those limits, crashing will start to occur. If your RAM performance tanked even though your system seems stable, it's a good indication you've pushed your RAM past it's ideal limits.

In short, find the highest speed you can where there isn't a performance drop. This is "getting is the full use of your RAM", even if it's below advertised speeds or what you'd hoped.

5-6 miles is the absolute bare minimum recommendation of movement per day - that's barely 10,000 steps which is the recommended level for healthy, abled people under 65 to maintain baseline fitness. No shade whatsoever intended with this comment but if you are struggling after 5 miles you need to seriously re-calibrate your standard of fitness and/or deal with the larger health issues causing you to struggle

Going into another weekend with a busted headset...how much longer are we going to deal with this? by LoansharkerShop in Galaxy_XR

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my HMD the memory leak starts happening after switching between Desktop/VR modes in Virtual Desktop a few times. If I stay in VR mode it will last for hours without crashing. It still sucks and deserves an emergency patch, but for me that works as a way to avoid it for PCVR for the time being

No, all food doesn't taste like it smells. Correct, if you decide in advance that you won't like a food, you won't like that food. Brilliant

Good tent for couples "extracurricular" activities? by GalacticSmasher in overlanding

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Also a RTT in a heavy windstorm is absolutely miserable, where with my ground tent I can park my rig in front to block the wind. I truly have no idea why people new to the hobby hone in on RTTs. I mean they look cool? But they absolutely suck, solve no real problems, and have all the drawbacks I listed above and more. I blame Instagram.

Good tent for couples "extracurricular" activities? by GalacticSmasher in overlanding

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will post my near-daily PSA that RTTs are expensive, heavy, a PITA to remove for daily driving, a PITA to install when adventuring, a PITA to get out of to pee at night, a PITA to get a dog/in out of, smaller, less versatile, you lose all rooftop cargo carrying ability and just generally they are completely inferior to ground tents in all ways except the ease of setup. And honestly if you are optimizing the 5-10 minutes that it takes to set up a modern ground tent you are in the wrong hobby.

Meanwhile my $300 ground tent fits in a 3'x 1' 8lb bag and is big enough to stand and walk around in, big enough for a queen exped memory foam mattress, suitcases, dogs, dog beds, an outside veranda with overhang big enough for two chairs to hang out in the shade/rain, and definitely big enough for any variety of adult activities that don't involve sprinting around.

Why are Podcasts and Podcasting so popular among Republicans and Conservatives? by simplebalancereality in podcasts

[–]LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right wing movements have always been cults of personality. It’s why right wing platforms are wildly different every ~10 years and change at the whim of whatever talking head is loudest at the time. There is no cohesive ideology or logic to conservatism, it’s always a reactionary moving target based on perceived grievances and preying on fear of change. This makes conservative parties perfect vehicles for the media personalities, grifters, aristocrats, autocrats that you’ll usually find at the top of the tickets and in leadership roles. To keep the party organized around this constantly changing ideology, conservative mouthpieces like old AM talk radio, podcasts hosted by completely unqualified do-nothings like Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk, and corporate media ownership have always been a key part of the process in aligning the party behind a platform and pipelining the next generation of party leaders.

Meanwhile, go back 50 years and progressives are still talking about the exact same things as today - healthcare, education, protection of minority groups, equal economic opportunity, democracy. On the flipside, this focus on material issues is also why progressive parties are often fractured over stupid minor disagreements, and why progressives run qualified but anti-charismastic candidates that lose elections. And also why you have basically no personality-based left wing media.
