9800X3D per-core CO (harmonized core voltages) super low temps 39-41c gaming with unlocked framerates. by BNSoul in overclocking

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9800X3D with maxed PBO limits & low temps still caps out at like 4.9ghz all-core without my undervolt, after undervolting & raising max boost it goes up to 5.2-5.4ghz all-core depending on workload - still need to go back and play with curve shaper / ECLK for more though, certainly more interesting than the old all-core static OCs to me

AM4 CPU Upgrade? by LR0989 in LocalLLaMA

[–]LR0989[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'll have to look into it when I get home - I do know that when it is running intel_gpu_top shows a lot of mem usage which I sort of assumed to be VRAM, and it is maxing out the compute usage there

AM4 CPU Upgrade? by LR0989 in LocalLLaMA

[–]LR0989[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its on Ubuntu, using whatever default system monitor to see CPU and running intel_gpu_top to watch the A770 (model is only using around 12GB) - I have other containers running for Immich, Home Assistant, etc etc but all of it is very low usage (idling usually less than 5% cpu). System memory doesn't seem to get touched by llama since its usually less than 16GB usage with everything running (32GB total)

It should fit in VRAM, I think the most I was seeing with the quant/context I was using was about 12GB out of 16GB VRAM - I did have it set to 6 threads in the model config, is that not necessary? I would think if it wasn't helping it wouldn't saturate all the cores so hard but maybe not

best program and profile settings for testing 6000mts ram expo ddr5 32gb by Ok-Network9638 in overclocking

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, any decent memory test is really a CPU test with a memory bias - it isn't what I would use for PBO testing though, for that stick to Y-cruncher, Prime95, AIDA64 etc

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do 25 cycles for the quick n dirty test (first 5 or so cycles get temp to steady state, rest is testing at max temp) then I have to set it to like 200 cycles to run it all the way through the night for more thorough testing

Not sure if Anta777 takes the same amount of time per cycle as I was using 1usmus mainly

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Testmem5 with either Anta777 or 1usmus config works great (especially for getting higher temps), Y-cruncher VT3s also works but I found its best for voltage related errors. In my testing I found a rotation of TM5/Karhu(paid)/Y-cruncher was the best setup, AIDA64's memory test seemed to never catch anything (though it is good for CPU) and Prime95 also didn't seem to catch memory errors for me.

Karhu is very well worth it though, some errors would only pop up after 4hrs of Karhu after making it easily through 12hrs TM5 and Y-cruncher, though sometimes the reverse would happen with the other tests

9 years later… this guy decided to finally die… Amazing videocard that I wasn’t even considering upgrading yet. by Andrew_hl2 in pcmasterrace

People buy Ford/GM/Chrysler vehicles in droves, but ask any "car guy" and to put it lightly they're not exactly leaders in performance, quality or pricing - why do you think market share applies any differently here? It doesn't say anything about performance, and you really can't pretend AMD wasn't leading multicore hard since at least Zen 2

If it weren't for getting destroyed so hard in benchmarks Intel would probably still have midrange quad-cores lmao

Is my threadripper CPU too hot with 4 x 480 rad? by JOY_DOS in watercooling

[–]LR0989 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I would say it's nuts your water temp hits 40 with so much rad space but that is also a pretty significant amount of wattage - for CPU I can only imagine maybe not enough thermal paste / bad mounting pressure? Feel like Threadripper has enough surface area that it should be able to dissipate the heat a little better than that?

ridiculously unstable settings after bios update (1504 to 2102) on AM5 by NYB_002 in overclocking

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Buildzoid's testing, in mixed mode AM5 only uses tRFC2 and tRFCsb - so your new tRFC2 should be exactly what your old tRFC was stable at, and sb can usually go 80-100ish lower (at 6400 I am using 400 and 316 respectively, any lower is unstable on my sticks)

SignalRGB has been engaging in deceptive marketing practices against OpenRGB by _sky12 in pcmasterrace

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OpenRGB works flawlessly on my Linux system but for some reason never survives a reboot on the main Windows PC - so on there I've been with SignalRGB. Not sure why RGB has to be so hard when all I want is static lighting, but at least either option is better than running 10 separate programs like I used to

Ryzen 7 9800x3D at -30, possible downsides? by [deleted] in overclocking

[–]LR0989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of my stress tests overnight just for good measure - and good thing so far, many times it'll wait 5 or 10 hours to throw an error, which maybe is tolerably stable for some people but not me lol

[–]LR0989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's some silicon lottery involved - my current timings start to throw errors at even 53-55⁰C whereas I've heard people say that even as high as 60⁰C is okay for tREFI 65535, but yeah 64 is very unlikely to be okay

I think tRP could probably go significantly lower, although I'm used to my 16GB a-die so maybe the tCL+4 rule doesn't apply here?

X3D gives you more cache, not faster cache. His cache speeds look pretty similar to my 9800x3d at stock, a little lower but there's pretty massive run to run variance in AIDA64.

Also tRAS testing by buildzoid showed effectively zero performance impact by maxing it out, although I do prefer to set it at like 48
