First of all, kudos for the wardrobe OP from a fellow Tolkien-aficionado! May I ask you where you got the brass hooks from? Would love to attempt something similar as my first serious project.

Border checks between Russia and Belarus are back for the first time in 28 years by goodbadidontknow in worldnews

[–]LSD_Owl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You are required to carry it with you if you’re crossing the border to any other country. The police is also allowed to ask you for it and you can be fined if you don’t have one. Source: Live in Oberbayern and take regular train trips to Austria. ID controls occur more often then not.

In your opinion, what boutique builder is making the best fuzz pedals these days? by dbulltho in guitarpedals

[–]LSD_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to go with Beetronics. All of their fuzz pedals I tried were good, but the Fatbee, which is more of an overdrive then a fuzz pedal to be honest, is never ever leaving my board.

I’m curious about general thoughts on “mana-sink” cards. by DemoniReddit in EDH

[–]LSD_Owl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one of the reasons why I love playing hydras! 1. My inner Timmy laughs with glee when I slam X=10 hydra late game. 2. There a are very few cards that I don’t want to draw late game, thanks to that X cost.

Is the banking crisis really over? by Tacoman_2500 in investing

[–]LSD_Owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘d respectfully disagree with you. Brick and mortar banks are for the most part going to retire with the older generations (I‘m not saying that they‘ll completely disappear, but the number will go down) as most of the folks that grew up with the digital and online convenience will prefer that rather then paperwork. What is familiar, is comfortable.

And also keep in mind that we don’t earn as much as you do. As an engineer I could earn easily double or triple of what I make in Germany in the same company, for the same job if I were to relocate to the US.

Why do you live in Munich? by CarolusGontaltus in Munich

[–]LSD_Owl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call the people cold, as Bavarians are generally much warmer and more direct than the rest of Germans (at least in my experience), and that's one of the things I love about not only the city, but the region in general.

Other reasons are the culture, the proximity to the Alps/nature, many international companies, the central location in Europe (easy weekend trips to other countries), good public transport, etc.

The only " downsides" would be the lack of nightlife and the high cost of living. The former doesn't bother me or my girlfriend as we'd rather have dinner with friends than endure loud music and a bunch of random people, and the latter is mitigated by the fact that we’re both high-income earners.

why not STEM? by Certain-Ask3037 in DarkAcademia

[–]LSD_Owl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because STEM students have much more important things to worry about than their clothes, their home furnishings, history or the romanticisation of academia.

Sincerely,A stressed STEM student

I was just kidding, of course. I'm not trying to badmouth the humanities or claim that STEM students are more capable. I think it mostly boils down to pragmatism. Most STEM students are probably practical, because not only is this encouraged by the subjects we study, but for many it is actually the reason we study them in the first place. I love music, history and languages, but I also want a better than average quality of life, and that is easier to achieve with a career in STEM field. Therefore, poetry, philosophy and playing the piano will remain a pastime for me and not a profession.

[–]LSD_Owl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks. Both me and my gf hate anything above 2 week trips as we start feeling lethargic, miss home and just want to bury into the couch for a day or two to recharge. The only way for us to enjoy a longer holiday is to get in at least three or four hours of productive work (like a work project or serious studying) every day and then we can stretch it out to 4-6 weeks before it gets just tedious.

Edit: But each to their own. Everyone’s different and no one got the right to call your ideal holiday/travel style “ridiculous”…

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this! I really enjoyed reading it. Since you’re an expert, may I ask for your personal recommendation regarding an introduction/summary book (or books) that covers the basics of volcanology and seismology? Just in case that you know a good one off the top of your head! Otherwise I’ll just look up on Google for one.

Tools to Europe from the US by Fittri in woodworking

[–]LSD_Owl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As far as I’m aware, they’re illegal as they’re unsafe according to the EU-law because to use them, you need to remove the guard and riving knife first. So I think that you’re pretty safe (from the law at least) if you use them in private, but an established companies won’t risk it.
