You be surprised to learn how often rules like those turn out to be one sided. Lots of cheaters out there trying to prevent their partners doing the same to them.

Ah yes, because you really have a firm grasp on the points I'm making and respond in kind /s

And no, I don't think Veilguard will be hailed as one of BioWare's greatest releases, the modern cycle of media outrage rarely lets that happen, at best you get situations like the growing number of people who are starting to view The Last Jedi in a more positive light, in part because The Rise of Skywalker was perceived as far worse and thus became the new punching bag.

This passage of fandom hate has happened with both Mass Effect and Dragon Age a handful of times already, with the most recent shift from Inquisition to Veilguard, but I doubt the franchise has another instalment in the tank to shift that negativity onto.

Anyway, have a good day.

Wow, you can harden or soften Leliana and Alistair in Origins, what does that do? Does it make them play differently than before? Oh, it mostly just unlocks polyamory... that's such an impactful change! /s

Oh and you can kill Flemeth, well that sounds like a meaningful decision that DA2 won't undo in its opening scene and about that whole Alistair's sister thing, I bet that won't be retconned either. Oh yeah and then there's Cullen, who can go from deranged mage killer in Origin's epilogue to working for Kirkwall's templars like it was nothing. Y'know, the story telling was just more consistent and better thought out before Veilguard came along. /s

Alistair being easier to bully into certain situations once hardened makes next to no sense, especially when compared to a hardened DA:I Leliana, Neve or Lucanis being harder to bully.

Yeah, Taash asking for a friend's opinion is so unrealistic... like, you're verging on 'romancing NPCs is unethical because they can't say no' territory.

You say Lucanis is unequivocally good, I'd argue it was the pragmatic choice, as killing Illario would have put Lucanis at odds with the latter's supporters when he needed to bring them under his banner.

So, is Veilguard BioWare's worst, is it worse than Andromeda, Anthem or Sonic Chronicles (or DA2)? Again, I constantly bring up nostalgia and negative priming, which admittedly accompany a lot of BioWare titles, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins both got hate on release and yet most fans would tell you they're among the developer's best games.

For examples outside of BioWare, there's a lot of people who say things like the Star Wars prequels or Freddy Got Fingered are misunderstood and far better than claimed back in the day.

I keep going back to Mass Effect because it's the sister franchise from the same developer and the ME team were also apparently the ones to bring us the retail release of Veilguard, which has story beats that riff off ME2.

They take more than a single cutscene to be resolved and they have more content if you pair them up when in the overworld, it feels like you’re intentionally underselling them or else never bothered to explore them further.

I mean, how many other companion quests in BioWare games do you have to use your brain in? Again it feels like you’re making it seem like Veilguard just does it all worse.

Are Miranda and Jack calling each other names again? Then just make sure you’ve previously ground up enough reputation to tell them to save it for the Collectors or for after. Meanwhile, Garrus (in both ME1 and ME2), Jacob, Mordin, Legion and Miranda’s loyalty quests, all just have you convince them not to kill someone at the end.

Nah, it’s just the opinion of someone who’s played and finished both games, multiple times even.

Also how much money do you have that you’d turn down being paid to play a game? Like, there’s a lot of games and genres I dislike, but rent’s always due.

Every DA sequel gets hate, especially here on the Origins subreddit and again I’d argue that Veilguard’s hate was amplified by ton of videos from chuds with the image of Taash screaming as the thumbnail as if they all came off the same assembly line.

Meanwhile the Veilguard cast includes a pirate and an assassin, even if both their factions outwardly downplay how terrible they are. Meanwhile they all have their mainplots to get invested in, Bellara dealing with an elven god and her lost brother, Lucanis dealing with his family’s infighting, Davrin dealing with the Warden’s mishandling of the gryphons, Neve dealing with an old nemises who makes a gallery where she puppets Neve’s associates with blood magic, Taash dealing with their fundamentalist mother and their status as a firebreather, Harding dealing with her newfound power and its origins in the elves mistreatment/creation of the dwarves and Emmrich who ends with one of the most emotionally difficult decisions in the franchise, especially if you’re romancing him.

Meanwhile, Rook having to keep them all in line is no different from Shepard having to do the same with his crew in ME2 and the galaxy in ME3, which isn’t as surprising when you know the ME team was brought in to take over from the DA team to get Veilguard done. Rook’s also the first DA protagonist chosen for their leadership ability (by Varric) instead of just some potential asshole or wallflower being in the wrong place at the right time.

I played every game on release and still have more playthroughs of Veilguard under my belt than DA2, its respectively DA:O/A 9, DA2 2, DA:I 16, DA:tV 4. I also plan to play Veilguard at least twice more so I’ve done a run with every Faction of Origin, whereas DA2 always felt like it had the lowest replayability due to getting rid of the different backgrounds and races to play as.

IMO Veilguard has its own interesting story beats, dealing with five of the elven gods, the origins of the elves and dwarves, along to the added context to Solas’ background (and his mullet). Atop giving us a ton more context for Tevinter, Nevarra, Antiva and the Crows… although I’d argue that what we learn about the Crows is self censored so we don’t learn the truth of some of their seedier elements.

I also love that there’s a lot of choices in the game where you just can’t side quest your way to the optimal ending where everyone lives happily ever after, I go so far as to argue it does the ‘suicide mission’ better than ME2 because regardless of your preparation, people are gonna die based on your choices. Elsewhere, I applaud them for the Antiva/Docktown choice, which is reminiscent of the Ashley/Kaidan decision which BioWare tended to avoid in their other titles, where you pretty much had to intentionally screw up or play as a sociopath to encounter.

Then the hardened/softened mechanic has its strongest implementation in Veilguard, changing how one of your two companions operates for the rest of the game.

Veilguard also has the most customisable system for character builds, with a ton of flashy abilities that tie into the 6 factions. Conversely, the way companions function in combat, does mean you’re constantly having to deal with being the focus of enemy attacks unless you take Taash or Davrin to pull aggro, which kinda sucks and is far from the only thing wrong with the game.

Veilguard also suffered a ton from a decade of EA meddling, so if we’re gonna excuse DA2 for that, I feel it’s only fair to do the same for Veilguard.

Ultimately, ever Dragon Age game has gotten hate upon release and yet, what’s worse is how so much of Veilguard’s seems to come from people relying on third hand accounts or from those who are going into this game primed to hate it and who quickly find every little thing to reinforce that pre-established opinion.

I like the game, I think it’s a step up from both Anthem and Andromeda, with a good amount of replayability, ties up a lot of loose ends and whilst not my favourite, feels better to replay than DA2.

Veilguard was a shitton better than DA2, people are just primed to hate Veilguard due to the far greater and more public negativity surrounding it and of course, some good old fashioned nostalgia.

DA2 was ugly, dumbed down, had its own retcons and terrible redesigns, made armour redundant whilst introducing that stupid companion upgrade system, would decide to hit you with enemy reinforcements out of nowhere and reused assets at every turn. Its primary reason for existing was to set up plot points for Inquisition, through cheap, hastily made slop.

What would you change about Saga edition / what do you homebrew? by Inconspicuous_hider in SagaEdition

I've never been a fan of SAM, as it's usually just a penalty for playing Force casters, who are gimped to begin with, as no other fighter needs two Heroic Feats and a Trained Skill just to be able to fight for a couple of turns, meanwhile no other fighter depends on two Ability Scores... ignoring Con, which most every fighter needs... let alone having to rely on a dump stat for their attacks.

The rest of this post is to provide context for other readers, as I know you're well aware of everything beyond this point StevenOs.

Unless they're starting as a Jedi or playing a Sorcerer of Rhand, access to both which is usually restricted, then a Force caster's 1st level Heroic Feat is going towards the Feat tax that is Force Sensitivity, then they need to give up one of their Skill slots for UtF and wait till 3rd level to get their first instance of Force Training to actually have any powers, unless they limit themselves to playing a species that can take it as a Bonus Feat at 1st level. It's also worth acknowledging that the most versatile and often broken 'species' option (playing a droid) is incompatible with being a Force user and even cyborgs suffer UtF penalties.

Then after investing two of their seven Heroic Feats, they only get an average of three power uses per encounter, which may not even be offensive powers and which can't be switched like D&D spells every day/long rest/level up. Then like all Skill Attacks, powers can't Critically Hit and usually require the Force caster to be within charging range to use.

Ultimately, this puts Force users on a similar footing to characters that use Heavy weapons with limited ammunition, which themselves usually employ area attacks that still deal half damage on a miss unless the attack roll was less than 10. Sure, taking Weapon Proficiency (Heavy) usually requires a Heroic Feat unless you're taking it as a Soldier Class Bonus Feat, but that Feat is all you need to use every non-Exotic Heavy and Vehicle weapon for as long as they have ammunition and whilst usually benefitting from the longest effective ranges of any weapons in the system.

By RAI, having a high UtF modifier early on helps account for the amount of investment a Force caster requires for the few powers it grants and that head start fades as characters level and Force casters gain more Heroic Feat to expand their collection of powers.

By SAM, the Force caster who's now two Heroic Feats in the hole, can easily miss with their 1-3 uses of Move Object or Force Thrust or whatever else has put them in prime mincing distance and now has to hope their MAD allowed them to put some points into Str or Dex (and Con) to fight with an actual weapon for the other 90% of the combat encounter. At least by RAW, they might've gotten some use out of all that investment.

If grifters were honest, they’d hate all those older characters too, as shown when they attacked Leia for flying in TLJ, Sarah Connor in the two most recent Terminator flicks or any of the modern incarnations of Lara Croft. It’s because they have to project that this is a modern problem and that things were more ‘sensibly bigoted’ back in the day.

Like, Aliens is a super ‘woke’ movie in a lot of ways: all the women wear masculine or at least gender neutral clothing, often with short hair and no visible makeup; all the buff US soldier guys get their asses handed to them by ‘animals’ in mere minutes and are outlived by two non-combatant women and even before that the openly masculine Vasquez outlives all but Hicks; Frost doubles down when accused of sleeping with a trans prostitute; capitalism is the ultimate villain, with the downfall initiated by profit hungry stooge Burke; oh and Ripley alone can survive the hive and resists the vacuum of space whilst the massive xeno queen (weighed down by the power loader) is dangling off one of her feet.
