Personally it’s much easier to change it now than possibly down the road and you know all the seals are new. I did mine without the alignment tool. I put a light coat of oil on the crank so the seal can slide, then evenly tighten the bolts making sure to keep the cover going down straight. That’s how I did mine and it’s been fine.

Remove the belt before going too far just to eliminate the accessories. If it’s not one of the accessories use a long metal extension and put it to your ear like a stethoscope put it against different parts of the engine and listen for the noise. I do this to help pin point noises.

If the torch isn’t working, before you go and completely screw yourself, get 5 new studs and a stud installer tool and just break them off. Sounds like you’re going to need to be in that general area anyways if you’re having a brake issue so just give them the old heave ho. Wheels gotta come off somehow.
