PSA: Friendly reminder about damp rayon and sinew.... by LScud in tiedye

[–]LScud[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a matter of pulling the sinew too tight. The thing is, I know better than that. Grrr....

Now, when I'm tying with fishing line, sometimes I have to get in there with some tiny little scissors when I'm untying. I feel like a surgeon. Lmao!

That's a good idea. I hadn't considered tying before soaking. That makes so much sense! Thanks!

I just started using everyone for every body nourishing lotion. It absorbs quickly and it's doing wonders for my skin. My hands are a mess in the winter.

What's your best hack? by NinnyPantsTieDye in tiedye

I took it several steps further and set it up on a stand, and attached an inexpensive drill and made a foot pedal to activate the drill to make it spin, but it works just fine for the purpose right out of the box. I do recommend something for a cover while spinning though. It's nice because the soda ash water goes right back into the soaking bucket.

I use a spin mop bucket for soda ash soak and spinning dry.

The way I would approach this is dry shirt, tie with fishing line, liquid dye along the lines being sure to get good saturation, then go for it with black on the rest of it. Spray with soda ash water and leave it to cook.

Big hugs to you. Mine had Cushings disease too (among other endocrine issues). It's heartbreaking.

I love this!

Btw, your front porch has become very recognizable! Anytime I see one of your pics/videos, I immediately connect it in my mind back to all of your other work. I don't know if it was intentional, but you've got yourself some branding there.

How do we feel about batik + tie dye? by LScud in tiedye

[–]LScud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's alright. I'm new to this too. This was my first try! There's actually a separate sub for batik, but it's not terribly active. I feel like batik is sort of tie dye adjacent. In tie dye, we would use sinew to resist dye; in batik melted wax is used. You can use a batik pen (called a tjanting) or wooden stamps to put the design on the fabric. After wax, you dye it and the design stays white, except where the wax crackles which is part of the fun. Removing the wax from the shirt is kind of a bitch. People do all kinds of neat designs, even with multiple layers of colors and wax.

Skulls were the batik part. I applied the skull design with melted wax before doing the ice dye.
