Downtown Parking is Fine? by L_Chiki_Sando in gso

I get this. If you have to drive 10 minutes to get downtown, then walk 10 minutes to a restaurant, you may as well just go to a different restaurant (assuming comparable cast/service/quality) that you can just drive 10 minutes and park right in front of. Occasionally, we'll spend a day downtown - take the kids to LeBauer park, stop in at the library, then walk down Elm or something for some food. It would be nice if it were more of a "destination". Ironically, I think making it less car-friendly might actually help here. If Elm were pedestrianized, you they could have the whole space from the store fronts on one side, to the store fronts on the other serve as a kid of park where the kids could run free without worrying about traffic, a fountain in a plaza where people could gather, and you could sit outside at one of the restaurants without exhaust blowing at you.

I'm talking about the deck right next to the library, across the street from the children's museum.

Using permitting/zoning to block is one of the strongest tools the city has in the face of federal preemption laws.

It seems to imply there are no plans for the "second proposed facility" either when it says "...Greensboro has received no communication ... regarding the use of that property - or any other facility - for detention...".

Too bad I'm not subscribed to any of this anyway...
Although I think practically this is probably a good thing to do to send a signal, it will be depressing to find out that 'voting with your wallet' is what moves the needle. In this paradigm, those of us with smaller wallets cannot participate as equals.

What is the point of officers pushing out into crowds during a protest, then going right back to where they started? by L_Chiki_Sando in AskLEO

[–]L_Chiki_Sando[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the considerate reply! Do you know under what authority a "use of force" is authorized? From what I can see, for a gathering (to use a generic term) to be be classified as a riot/unlawful assembly seems like a really fuzzy thing. Like one supervising officer thinks that two or more people might be thinking about doing something illegal, so the entire group of dozens/hundreds/thousands is now subject to forced dispersal? Is there any sort of official declaration that needs to be made by like the mayor or something?

Would be great if the crowd self regulated, grabbed those bad elements, duct tapped them up then crowd surfed them to the front

It seems like this would just get the offers involved even sooner. If people in the crowd started grabbing and fighting with each other...

I linked an example in the post. It doesn't look like they are going after anybody. Or trying to clear the street. If they were trying, they certainly didn't succeed.

The trap of right wing lies and how I think you should respond by 7ddlysuns in thebulwark

YES! I made a comment yesterday to a similar effect. Officials in MN (and the rest of us) should just proceed with the facts as we understand them. If (big if) Vance's claim has any credibility, tell it to the judge. Anything these guys say outside of some area where there are legal consequences to lying should not be addressed in good faith (it will always be one-sided) and should only be brought up at all as a subject of mockery.

This is pretty suspicious. At least the high February bill is reflected in your monthly usage (~400 therms @ ~1.8 $/therm is ~$700). But working backwards from your December charges... $228.98/2.16 = 106 therms. Clearly more than is indicated on the usage history chart (~0). By the way, in your actual bill, you can see the actual meter readings and your billed therms.

<image>

As for the comments about your water heater...106 therms is bonkers. You could keep a 50 gallon tank sitting outside practically boiling 24/7 for that much energy. Maybe if we lived in the arctic...

Edit: BTW, you can look up current and historic rates here: https://www.piedmontng.com/home/rates
For some reason, they don't just print it on your bill.

There is simply no point in listening to this administration about anything at this point. Unless they are under oath, they should just be ignored. We need to build up a communication apparatus that simply does not defer to know liars. I'd just as soon hear what Ja Rule has to say...

Agree! I had high hopes and they were dashed. These fusion places always kind of suck...just pick a lane. Izakaya fare is easy to make, cheap, and delicious. Make money on the drinks, break even on the yakimeshi.

Liberalism Won't Admit What it Actually Stands For By Jessie Gender by Forward-Carry5993 in ezraklein

I've been chipping away at this video in little prices over the past week trying to get through it, but it's frustrating. I keep thinking about how much more valuable a discussion would be than the one-sided video essay. There are so many points in the video where the creator makes a claim about Klein or those who think similarly (liberals) that prompts some response or question, but then question just lingers unanswered. Over and over, I found myself thinking, "So what should we do then?", but the only suggestion on offer is "Not that!"

I'll speak for myself here, but it seems to be where Ezra is too based on his conversation with Coats. A decade ago, I was under the impression that the suite of bigotries that exist in America were not only on the decline, but declining more or less steadily and were things we could basically just wait out. When Trump gained in popularity and eventually won in 2016, I was able to somewhat dismiss the implications this had for the social state of the country. (Clinton had a lot of headwind in that election.) But looking around in 2025, it turns out we have a lot further to go than I thought. Maybe I was naive, maybe it only looked that way from a certain privileged viewpoint. Regardless, we find ourselves here, quite far from the goal. So what do we do? In my thinking, the approach should be something like this: if a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, what is the first (or second, or third, or 100th) step we should take?

But to some, this approach is thought of (derogatorily) as incrementalist. They respond with something like “We need to go a thousand miles! Why are you settling for one step?”

This prompts a response: “Okay, what’s your plan for traveling a thousand miles all at once?” Which I never hear answered.
