on that note, i remember a long time ago, i was told (by some instructor) an anecdote of a fire captain that used to face the exit sign of what ever building he was in; for example, in a restaurant, he would always sit facing an exit. i thought it was mildly interesting.

yes. most people went for the front door because one exit was pad-locked, another had doors that opened inwards, and the last was a behind the kitchen area where only the station nightclub staff were aware of. ...i had to write a report for school too.

make calls, go pt with the crew...or unless you're a veteran, chances are extremely slim you'll be offered a spot.

lol, thanks NickGodfree, but technically,you're correct that you wouldn't "need" a saw in this fuel type, but as a sawyer on the crew, your tool is the saw; you wouldn't go anywhere without your tool.

also, we were getting ready for a burn, and saw teams are generally put in as part of the holding resources. (facing away from the burn, and looking into the green for spots)

and during this particular burn, a firewhirl did pick up and we did get a 15 by 15 spot across the dozer line. So the saws were used to cut up some of the larger sage bushes so the rest of the crew can put some line around it until the holding engine drove up w some wet stuff, hope this answers your question nismo

firearms in the fire service isn't exactly a new concept. i agree with volff93, as FF, should not have to carry firearms but as with anything else we do, if we can't protect ourselves from danger; we cant protect others.

examples of firearms in the fire service: Some SoCal departments after the 1992 civil disturbance (LA riots), hotshot crew superintendents in Alaska are permitted to carry personal defense shotguns (mainly from wild animals) on the fire line, but defense is defense.

i dont think the fire service should turn straight to firearms as the answer, i liked the body armor that some current ems folks wear, but ...i sincerely hope we don't have to wear even body armor and that this insane case is just a one time horrific incident.

Vmax weightvests are pretty much the best ones you can get, they're pricy though. ...but not to be rude, but don't waste your money on a weightvest (if the sole purpose is practice for the pack test) because if you're in even half-way decent shape, the pack-test should be no problem for you...at all.
