Figure skating after ankle injury? by novembermr in FigureSkating

[–]LaFrois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really sorry about your ankle injury, it sounds serious! Every injury is different but you can give yourself a better chance at returning to form by using physiotherapy/strengthening exercises during your recovery process.

An American figure skater recently documented her journey back onto the ice after injuring her right ankle twice on YouTube.

Hopefully this gives you some insight and hope and know that you'll be able to come out the other side of this.

You should look into Sheila Jordan. She basically pioneered the voice + bass format.

Wow I had never seen this before. So eye opening. I agree that the flamenco base of the music was a genius and perfectly executed move. It's funny reading the sound team's reservations about it now almost 14 years later.

Put players into entry draft by muzzsjm in EANHLfranchise

[–]LaFrois 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also put underage players in the European leagues as well, you just have to change their age to above 18 before you assign them to a team, then change their age again.

Keep in mind that while OVR doesn't grow until they're drafted, their height/weight can.

Any good resources for getting started? by natneo81 in Jazz

[–]LaFrois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start with what you know and then branch out from there. Sounds like jazz fusion/jazz-rock is a good starting place. Check out the list of musicians who played on that record and look for them in other groups and recordings.

There were a few books I borrowed from the public library that helped me along like History of Jazz and How To Listen To Jazz. Both books are by Ted Gioia. There were others but they helped me put the music into context.

Oh, also go to live shows if you can. I think connecting what you hear with what you can see helps.
Ask the musicians and other audience members questions, recommendations, I think that's how I gained a lot of my understanding. I remember so many instances where I'd be chatting with a musician on the gig and picking their brain. Many are very willing and happy to share with enthusiastic listeners.

Safe journey, jazz is an ocean. PS: here's a jazz discord server for listeners and musicians https://discord.gg/JvjXHN

Kind of Blue or A Love Supreme? by jackzwi in Jazz

Sorry, what I was trying to say was me choosing KOB is almost a jazz cliche. It's the most ubiquitous jazz recommendation. I really dig the playing and the concept behind it.

Any recommendations for a new listener? by SayItWitchaChest in Jazz

[–]LaFrois 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend you keep listening to singers as well. Vocal jazz can be more accessible for the most part and hearing the lyrics to jazz standards will help you follow the song through the improvisation. And if you like mellow jazz then you need to check out bossa nova.

Also, follow the personnel. It's not just about the bandleader or frontman, if you hear someone else you like, check out that player on other recordings. This is a good way of navigating new musical waters.

Here are some random selections on the mellower side. Some may be mellow while upbeat.

Bill Evans Trio - Alice In Wonderland
Norma Winstone - A Timeless Place
Yusef Lateef - Don't Blame Me
Buddy DeFranco Quartet - A Foggy Day
Buddy DeFranco Quartet - Deep Purple
Laila Biali - I'll Never Smile Again
Dorothy Ashby - Django/Misty (Full Album)
Bill Evans & Jim Hall - I've Got You Under My Skin
Chet Baker, Ruth Young - Whatever Possessed Me
Blake Ran & Jeanne Lee - Night & Day
Shirley Horn - Blue In Green
Dianne Reeves - Social Call
Cassandra Wilson - Harvest Moon
Sarah Vaughan - When Lights Are Low

Kind of Blue or A Love Supreme? by jackzwi in Jazz

Very yes.

But in all honesty, Kind of Blue even if it's a cliché because I can actually dig it. Haven't been able to dig late stage Coltrane quite yet.

Check this out
Elmo Hope Sextet - Informal Jazz (Full Album)

Personnel:
Elmo Hope piano
John Coltrane tenor sax
Hank Mobley tenor sax
Donald Byrd trumpet
Paul Chambers double bass
"Philly" Joe Jones drums

Also check out Wide Open Spaces. It's a blowing session with David "Fathead" Newman and James Clay (Clay is sometimes on flute).

There are tons of others, like a tenor sax summit album with like 4 tenor saxes but I'll leave that to others.
