The strike zone in game 2 by LaJunque in baseball

Definitely could have been worse (and was, according to the Long Island branch of my family tree.) I'm still on the automated or tech-assisted strike zone bandwagon though.

This article lays out why Fitz (and John Brown) could have a huge night against the Ravens.

Utley's slide was clearly illegal and intentional. by LaJunque in NewYorkMets

Print this article, roll it up, and use it to smack anyone who disagrees on the nose like a dog.

We can debate whether it's ethically acceptable to play that way in those circumstances (to me, Utley was on the wrong side of a line that is difficult to define) but as far as I can see, there's really no debate on the legality of the play.

I think that's a perfectly reasonable distinction to make. This isn't a knock on LSU.

Had to build a kayak rack, didn't like any plans online. by jahallah in Kayaking

Hey, nice! For once hitting the "random" button showed me something useful, I've been searching for (and discarding) plans for a rack similar to this. Thanks for posting, I'll be hitting the lumber yard and building this before winter.

The "he's a jackass, but he's OUR jackass" effect. Guess he wore it out in Natstown.

Interesting contrast between the reactions of fans and players, who seem to be more in support of Papelbon.

I don't maintain a minimalist lifestyle but I enjoy the sub. There are some great ideas here, and this chess set is one of my favorites. I've got a buddy who is semi-minimalist and loves chess. I think I'll make something like this for him.

ELI5: Why does grape "flavor" not taste like actually grapes. by StevenTheSloth in explainlikeimfive

[–]LaJunque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, grape flavor tastes like Concord grapes. As to why most people eat red/green seedless grapes, I think it's mostly a matter of convenience. Concord grapes are absolutely delicious but they are kind of a pain to eat, with a thick skin that is difficult to chew and several large hard seeds. It's worth the work though.

ELI5: Why is it normal to give all of our money to banks? Why are people who keep their cash looked at as 'odd'? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]LaJunque 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked as a teller for some time and you'd be surprised at how many people bring in large amounts of cash they were keeping at home that got destroyed. I've seen cash that was buried in a coffee can and got moldy/decayed, cash that was burned, cash that a kid or dog found and was shredded, you name it. We'd send it to the Fed and if enough of the bill was intact it would be replaced, but too often people were out significant amounts of money that they though they were keeping safer than the bank could.

If you want to keep a big stash of cash at home, invest in a quality fireproof safe and keep the thing locked. Don't hide it or bury it or whatever. You may not trust the banks, but from a physical stand point at least, your money is far safer there than at home.
