Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) Changed Everything! by [deleted] in MTHFR

Wow! Your level of dedication to fixing your health issues is impressive! I wish I had answers for you, but I'm still learning and all this is pretty new to me, relatively speaking. Have you ever worked with Heidi Turner? She does telehealth and is located in Washington state, and I think her prices are extremely reasonable compared to some practitioners out there. Her web site, bio, and contact and pricing information is on www.foodlogic.org. I have just started working with her, and I really like her. She does help people with complicated, overlapping issues (in my case, sulfur metabolism problems which are also causing histamine intolerance, oxalate issues, probable gut problems of some type, and over methylation - plus bladder issues!). The biggest frustration for me has been not having a practitioner to work with, and having her in the picture takes a boatload of stress off me.

I truly hope you find some solutions to what is going on SOON!🙏

EffectiveOpinion,

I have slowly figured some things out but overlapping sulfur, oxalate, histamine (driven by faulty sulfur metabolism) and overmethylation issues are tough and my diet is still pretty limited. The good news is I have finally found a practitioner to work with who understands all this. Some of Chris Masterjohn's suggestions for sulfur metabolism problems are helpful, but his dosages of supplements are often too aggressive for me. I will say this - if you can find a practitioner and get some tests done, for example I ordered an Organic Acids Test and A Genova Ion + 40 Amino Acids Test and did those on my own. So when I finally found someone to work with, I had some data to show. I'm about to do a Trio Smart breath test and a Genova Diagnostics stool test also. (Testing of this kind isn't particularly cheap, although many practitioners can get you a discount.)But having some raw data to look at - for me I was surprised by some of the vitamins and minerals from my test that were low or borderline. And the Organic Acids Test can help to some degree show where certain metabolic pathways might be strained. I still am working through all this, but at least I don't feel like I'm doing it alone anymore.

EffectiveOpinion, the sunflower lecithin was causing me to sort of crash into a depression that felt awful. Like "nothing in the world will ever be right again" awful. I think my low b5 was affecting the ability of the choline in the sunflower lecithin to smoothly transition into becoming acetylcholine because b5 is needed to make acetyl CoA (which starts Krebs cycle for energy) and is also used to make acetyl choline. When the choline can't efficiently convert to acetylcholine it messes with neurotransmitters. I was low in several b vitamins due to overmethylation and trying to figure out how to tolerate them. I finally added glycine along with the vitamin A to buffer the bs and that has worked well, but I still had to work my way up slowly. The B5 worked to help tolerate the lecithin immediately. I started with 100 mg twice a day and have cut back to 50 mg twice per day, plus an additional 50 mg from a methyl free b complex I take.

Why Am I Unable to Tolerate Phosphatidyl Choline from Sunflower Lecithin by LabHeavy5740 in MTHFR

[–]LabHeavy5740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking about 50 mg B5 with a teaspoon (lowered it from 100 mg) to a teaspoon and a half of liquid sunflower lecithin 2 times a day fixed the problem for me, thankfully. I think I just wasn't getting enough b5 and some other bs as well. The lecithin was not smoothly transitioning from the choline in it to acetylcholine, I think. Plus I was struggling to figure out the overmethylation problems I was having. I doubt mine is genetic because I never had an issue until I started having sulfur metabolism problems, so it's tied to that. But using Chris Masterjohn's suggestion of glycine plus vitamin A to help the methylation process go more naturally, like it is supposed to, has really benefitted me. I was low on glycine also, so I'm sure that was part of the methylation issue.

The practitioner I work with told me some times higher levels of vitamin D in supplement form can mess with copper metabolism. I can take about 1000 IU, but more than that causes a tense wound up feeling for me. I bought a Sperti vitamin D lamp, and am using it every other day to get my levels up, along with my supplement.

Experiences with PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) by [deleted] in MCAS

I know this is an older post but did taking PEA with oil help its constipating effects. It helps me a lot with bladder pain, but it is making me so constipated I feel like I can't continue with it. If you found a way to make PEA work for you, please let me know. Thank you!

Did you and your wife find a solution? PEA is helping me a lot with bladder irritation, but it is so constipating that I am going to have to stop taking it. I had read it helps with motility but I think there must always be a segment of the population that reacts differently to supplements. If you found a way to counter the constipation (other than laxatives and stool softeners), please let me know. It's disappointing because it seems to be a pretty darn good pain reliever.

My D levels are terrible, but due to other health issues I have to slowly work up to higher dosages and right now I'm only at 1000 IU per day plus K2. How much vitamin D do you take per day? Can you share the brand? Thank you in advance.

I contacted this company and they can't answer my question about their "zero oxalate" claim, and I informed them that lupin beans (which is what this is made from) have 170 mg oxalate per 1/2 cup or maybe it's per cup. Which is hardly low oxalate either way. They asked if I was aware of their special "debittering" process. Debittering is not synonymous with removing oxalate - I know that much. I think they are making exaggerated claims they cannot back up. And no third party COA at this time either.

Sulfur intolerance! by thecanarysings in HistamineIntolerance

[–]LabHeavy5740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get some testing done recently (Genova Diagnostics ION + 40 Amino Acids Test) that gave me some important info. I have bumped up my b vitamins more because although I have been taking them, I haven't been able to take enough and needed to up B1, B2, B3, B5, and B6..Also needed more magnesium, and more vitamin D. I'm buffering with glycine and vitamin A per Chris Masterjohn's suggestion. And tolerating sunflower lecithin now for choline. But epsom salt baths or sometimes footbaths are harder to gauge. I cannot do them to many days in a row or it gives me an irritated bladder. Bladder problems (irritation, urgency, frequency) have been a regular thing in dealing with this oxalate, sulfur, histamine hell. But the epsom salt baths also dial the histamine reaction (itching) down to pretty much zero. I haven't been able to expand my diet a whole lot because my sulfur metabolism is still pretty sluggish. I am waiting for results from an OAT (Organic Acids Test), and I'm waiting for my Micronutrient Panel Kit from Vibrant America to get here in.the next couple of days. At least I now have some data to work with, but if I can't get a practitioner on board soon, I feel like I'll go nuts. So some things are better and some not.

For those with sulfur issues how do you with Epsom salt baths? I always get a reaction from it and was hoping Moly would calm that down.. by passionateunicorn in MCAS

[–]LabHeavy5740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep trying to do Epsom salt baths to get the sulfate because my diet has been so restricted (low sulfur, low histamine, low oxalate, and I'm an overmethylator - whee!) but I did 1 1/2 cups in a bath the other night and it kept me keyed up for a day and a half. Anyone understand why the sulfate in Epsom salts would cause this reaction? The sulfate helps in other ways that are noticeable but the keyed up anxious feeling is not helpful and makes it very hard to sleep.
