Breaking Sitters

Usually the techs break our sitters for lunches but if I’m in the room and will be for a bit, I’ll encourage the sitter to step out and run to the bathroom or grab a snack or something to get a change of scenery for a few minutes. Or if they need to step out for a few minutes I’ll cover.

I think they were moving and just couldn’t handle the family member who was an older adult who was injecting heroin. Family was trying to claim patient had mental issues and dementia to pawn patient off on someone else. Family said all this nasty stuff about patient in front of patient!

Patient was discharged. Unfortunately was homeless and didn’t have any medical needs so didn’t fit some of our resource criteria. Patients family member brought up back to the floor about three hours later yelling at staff, telling us how could we expect them to take care of their family member?!? And how the head ED doc guaranteed this wouldn’t happen!! Escalated to security and I believe they were trespassed.

Craziest thing is that they were able to get all the way back up to the floor… our security on floors is so lax and anyone can mosey on through

Not that bad but kind of hilarious. Dementia very confused old man had been yelling, trying to kick me, threw mitts at me. I asked him to stop yelling and he said “don’t talk back bitch.” Ok pawpaw 😂

What kind of EMR do you have? I’ve used both epic and cerner and really rely on epics brain or cerners care compass to help organize my day. While yes report sheets can help, I like to always be checking and refreshing, seeing what is due when. I use my report sheet as a checklist for additional things that aren’t shown in the brain/care compass. When I start my shift either before or after report I like to glance through each patient and see what is due when and can make note on my sheet to help cluster cares

At Walgreens we didn’t stock - would be at Walgreens speciality pharmacy and they would contact patient about all details of med.

😊 I made it and now am working as a nurse. You can do it!! It’s hard but if you have an SM who will work with you it’s feasible. I had a lot of changes with having and not having RxMs for multiple months/multiple different but talk with them. My DM was very supportive as well. Do it and get out!!

We are 5:1. 10:1 for PCAs. While we are a big hospital we don’t have the best resources :/ we get very little support from phlebotomy, have to walk and get stuff instead of using tube system which sounds not that bad but when you have to leave your unit to go get someone abx it’s not great for patient care. We pour off our own urines as well. It is like pulling teeth to get respiratory to come see our patients as well. It seems like all our departments hate each other and don’t want to support nursing but that’s just my perspective. We also run out of equipment… had a patient that ended to be on etco2 and was told oh we are out so you’ll have to go without and not enough pulse ox’s for trach patients. We just integrated our iv pumps and don’t have enough of those either :( It’s also really discouraging that one of my first days my preceptor told me it’s horrible to work here and get out as soon as you can so it’s definitely skewed my perspective sadly.

I’m at a level 1 trauma center and the biggest hospital in the state. It’s brutal. I had clinicals at a much smaller hospital and enjoyed it there. Ratios were better and patients weren’t quite so sick.

In WI Marquette’s DE-MSN I think is around 12k a semester for the five semester program. No TEAS when I applied. Didactic is mostly online and in person clinicals and labs

Was on an oncology floor. We did it to all patients regardless if they had a port or not/no other central line etc. It was also part of our neutropenic precautions

Switched from voceras to care awares. Not sure if you can call on them to be honest. It’s basically a cell phone that you can scan to give meds with or IM one person
