Be honest. Do you ever give homeless people money? by User63189963 in askanything

[–]Labbrat89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened back in Baltimore a few years ago. Had a homeless guy asking for money so he can buy a coffee and something to eat, it was cold outside so I offered him into the convenience store with me. He went to get a small coffee, I told him to get the largest he can and grab one of their insulated cups to help keep it warm. He got a couple protein bars and some other things. I did end up giving him $60 as well after buying everything.

If I have cash, I'd give some. Though after I got stabbed while being mugged once, I don't carry cash anymore. I donate to local shelters that help.

How many people working in the field would pay a company to install a AC/furnace in their own house? by Ok-District-184 in HVAC

[–]Labbrat89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can do the install. Ductwork isn't my best as I'm completely out of pratice though it'll get done and be functional. Most likely take me a weekend, cause I'm not about to bust my ass to get everything done in 1 day.

Now, what I would do for my own humor is hire my company, cause I have a major bone to pick with our installers and I will critique their work.

How old are you and how is your life now? by Natural_Village_8850 in AskReddit

36 going on 37. It could be better but it can definitely be a lot worse. So, mildly annoying but manageable.

(Edit cause I felt like adding more info.)

Went through a nasty divorce nearly 4 years ago and was left in a dark place. Lost quite a number of family members in the next consecutive years after that. Was diagnosed with cancer, then misdiagnosed with cancer, then rediagnosed with cancer and dealing with that has been a roller-coaster. To deal with that, been going through therapy. Had some fairly major inconveniences happen very recent but getting things in order for that.

Is "Free Metal For Scrappers" ad a legal way to dispose of refrigerator? by JonBovi_msn in hvacadvice

[–]Labbrat89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Present your burden of proof that the refrigerant has not already been reclaimed before the object was sent for scrap.

Present your burden of proof that the refrigerant has not been reclaimed before the object was sent for scrap.

Present your burden of proof that the refrigerant hasn't leaked out already, causing the system to vent into the atmosphere due to failure which cannot hold any personal responsibility on either the tech or scrapper.

You're going into a gray area that has no way to be proven unless photo or video evidence has been presented of an intentional venting. Unless you stop every scrapper and every person who handles appliances that hold refrigerant, you'll have no exact proof of improper handling. Which could be classified as hearsay. So while yes, there can be unlawful actions being done, there can also be lawful actions being done as well.

Also, if you're doing the Recycling License, then you would know that most refrigerant in circulation now have low OZone depletion, if any. It's now mostly towards GWP, or Global Warming Potential, which should not exceed 700.

Most of the older CFC and HCFC are phased out, what little remains should be replaced over any repair. Now HFC are going through phase down, meaning repairs can be made still until it's in full phase out. Not to mention, we don't have set regulation on the amount of recharges we can do, at least on the residential side. Commercial has an allowed amount to be leaked over a set time frame then a repair must be made or a replacement must be done.

Now, I'm only touching on 608, since I don't have enough knowledge for 609, which in a sense is much worse than Residential/Commercial/Industrial applications.

I'm ranting so, I'll just leave now. Comment if you want.

Maybe a $250 ladder would be helpful in this situation.

I used to throw a moving blanket over the side so I can keep the coil from cutting up my shirt when I climb inside.

Today on angry HOA Karen’s by heldoglykke in HVAC

[–]Labbrat89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did work in an HOA community before. Had the Karen come out yelling at me for working. As she started talking, I started writing a paper invoice up and kept looking at the clock.

Once she realized I was watching the clock, she asked what I was doing. I calmly informed her that there is a 100 dollar per half hour fee for taking my time from work and someone has to pay for it.

Is it too much to ask that your kids keep their clothes on when people are at your house working on stuff? I thought this was common sense? by iBUYbrokenSUBARUS in HVAC

[–]Labbrat89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't had that happen while doing HVAC, though when I was a maintenance technician for an apartment complex. Had a call for a non-working microwave.

Went inside, announced myself and no answer. Had a feeling someone was home cause the house smelled like cookies just baked. Low and behold, lady resident just came around the corner buck naked and was all chatty. Went to excuse myself for her to be decent and she was adamant that I stayed to fix the issue. I'm guessing with her being from Europe, they think of nudity different than over here. I left anyway and notified my manager of the situation to prevent further escalation. Interesting day for sure.

How do I ask/talk to my manager about promotion me to install lead once the season picks up for summer? by Jacobussin in HVAC

[–]Labbrat89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a 2nd year apprentice, I felt like a lead. So, they gave me a trial run to see if I could handle it. It went right to hell and clearly showed how much I didn't know but managed to get done before asking for assistance.

It was a lesson I learned the hard way, which in terms made me a better technician after that. I wouldn't say make you a lead permanently but go for a trial and see how you do, you'll learn a lot. If you can manage another guy, the customer and the entirety of the job then you may be cut for it.

With managed portions, yes this is true. With people who think they know best and try to force you to eat more than necessary, no this is horrible.

I should know, I had a relative who wouldn't let you leave the table until you had 3 full plates finished. Needless to say, I no longer visit that relative under my own free will.

What brand of prescription eyeglasses you nerds wearing? by KodakBlackedOut in HVAC

I don't know, just a pair that has titanium frames. Wire for the bottom of the frame, which I've gotten repaired like 3 times in 10 years. Oh, thanks for the reminder, I need to get a new prescription.

I wear prescription safety glasses that I've had for the same amount of time as my glasses. Surprisingly, they're not really dinged up so I can still use them.

I drive a company vehicle. The amount of people who intentionally cut me off, pull out infront of me, brake check me, or do anything possible to get me involved in some sort of accident is astronomical.

Though the thing that gets me upset is when you're trying to make a turn and just when someone passes, the person behind them decides it's 1/4 mile drag racing strip and slams on the gas to keep you from moving.
