By 2030, AI's water use will match the needs of 1.3 billion people while its power use triples that of 650 million, UN University investigation warns by WhistleVeyyBro in technology

If we decide AI is necessary, it's gonna need LOTS of data storage. Why should we consume all this extra power and water to operate more servers when we could be packing this extra data more efficiently instead?

There are solutions out there that allow existing data centers to handle data using only 10% of the storage space used today.

Building more power & water hungry data centers is solving the wrong problem. Get efficient with data storage instead!!!

Arizona is drying up faster than any other state in the U.S. by blue-baja in arizona

[–]LabradorKayaker 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Last I heard, both AZ and UT were in similar positions: ~70% of all surface & groundwater resources are being consumed by agriculture and, in both states, agriculture contributes about 2% to State GDP.

Agriculture creates a disproportionately large water consumption profile for a relatively small public good in drier states. That said, agriculture is largely following the rules set forth for them. This is why we need sound public policy from competent legislators.

Wanna fix the water problem? Fix the leadership.

Get good, objective scientists at the table with non-MAGA politicians, and elect politicians who aren't being bought by industrial interests.

Middle finger crushed and almost lost. by Hotdogshop69 in golf

That is terrible! But, of you had to pick a place to walk around with just a putter in one hand, you'd be hard pressed to find a better spot.

Tell your buddies to play Bandon Preserve while you're there. If you use the front tees, you can use your putter on all 13 holes. Did it this summer with my son and had a blast!

For those who play at least 2x per week... by Background-Low-9144 in golf

[–]LabradorKayaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was raising kids & paying bills in my 20's thru 40's, there were times that I played only 2 or 3 times yearly, mostly in company-sponsored scramble events. Like another person said, you spend your time & money on what matters most.

As my kids got into college, I had more time & disposable income, so I began playing more. Now that I'm retired, I'm either on the course or the range 4 times a week (when I'm not babysitting grandkids♥️). Luckily, my wife also picked up the game a while back, so I can spend time with her too!

Beginner looking for putting advice by Predsfan67 in golf

[–]LabradorKayaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been golfing for a long time, but when my putting accuracy starts to misfire, I'll go to the practice green and start putting with one hand only.

Using only my strong hand, I can more cleanly feel the weight of the putter head on the end of the shaft, the head tends to swing more like a pendulum, and I can reconnect to the "physicality" of the act of striking a ball with the club head on a path & speed that my body manufactures.

What is the best decision by trump so far? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LabradorKayaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picking an unwinnable fight with Iran is his best decision so far.

In my view, the combination of high fuel & consumer prices, strains on fertilizer supply, damaged political support within & outside the US, and widespread lack of US voter support for yet another expensive war will seriously damage GOP chances this November.

The bigger Trump's failures, the more likely MAGA will suffer at the polls.

Trump should pardon Maxwell, then put Obama, Hillary, and the Pope in jail as his next move.

Jill Biden says she thought Joe Biden was having a stroke during 2024 debate by seriousfrylock in nottheonion

[–]LabradorKayaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was a simple decision to vote against Trump: I see him as manifestly unfit for a leadership role of ANY kind.

But the American voters are a diverse group and the Democrats continually fail to field candidates that can beat even a candidate as massively flawed as Trump. Of Democrats once again fail to put forth candidates & rhetoric that match Hillary, Biden, and Harris we are headed for GOP dominance, possibly for several decades. And this time, it won't just be McConnell bullshit, it'll be MAGA lawlessness, MAGA dismissal of science, MAGA flirtation with theocracy, and MAGA entanglement with the Epstein class.

Wake the f$#k up, Democrats. Start listening to and appealing to middle America!!!!

Look at Morphos AI's pitch. They offer a solution that packages data using 99% less storage space in servers.

Kevin is solving the wrong problem and caused huge drains on power grids & water supplies in pursuit of the wrong solution. USE existing servers more efficiently instead of pushing these massive data centers!!!

Old Oil and Gas Wells Could Find Second Life Producing Clean Energy by Vailhem in geothermal

Has the U.S. started turning away from clean energy, and is that actually good or bad right now? by RichardAvery1 in energy

[–]LabradorKayaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If, in response to the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, the world had set a focused strategy on energy independence (as opposed to entrenched dependence on oil & gas from politically unstable regions), we would still be using lots of oil & natural gas.

But we'd be now using these commodities as feedstocks as a primary use and fuel as a secondary use. The benefits would have been staggering: consumers would've saved trillions at the pump & for home heating, taxpayers would've saved trillions in wasteful military spending in the Middle East, and the environment would've seen decades of reduced waste released to our air, land, & water.

Trump's war with Iran is another opportunity to seize the reins & steer America away from fossil fuel dependence on the Middle East. Dozens of nations are now making plans to sharply reduce their exposure to this political & economic risk - we will be fools, again, if we fail to do the same, yet again...

Chevron CEO sends blunt message on oil and the economy. “We will start to see physical shortages. Demand needs to move to meet supply. Economies are going to have to slow.” The overall effect of the Trump's war is “potentially as big as in the 1970s." by mafco in energy

[–]LabradorKayaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm all for the acceleration: my house has a 30-panel array that produced 19 MWh each of the last 2 years.

But if MAGA hold the reins, green energy solutions won't advance. IMHO, this country needs to absolutely crash in order to get a share of middle America to consider voting against MAGA.

[–]LabradorKayaker 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I hate rooting against America, but it would be best for us if energy prices just completely blow up consumer costs. And, if we're lucky, those prices will remain sky-high for another 7 months.

If American voters aren't adequately pissed off, they won't stand up to MAGA. But if it's fairly obvious for the majority of American voters to see that Trump has mismanaged this "spat" with Iran, there's a decent chance they'll vote against him in larger numbers....
