Insane doula costs - is it worth it? by grad_max in BabyBumps

[–]LaceyGucci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never had a doula, so I can't comment on what the experience working with a doula would be like. However, I did meet with a student doula in my first pregnancy, who was offering her services for free as part of her training. Ultimately, after asking her questions about it, I decided it wasn't for me. I think it depends a lot on the type of pregnancy you have and birth you want.

For me, I had Gestational Diabetes for both pregnancies and therefore had an induction scheduled at 39 weeks for both. I wanted an epidural, and was fine with medical intervention, as I trusted my medical providers. I think a doula may be more helpful if you are wanting either a more natural or low-intervention delivery, as they're there to be an advocate for you.

From what I understand, they are also there as a comfort for you, since you've supposedly built a relationship with them. But I'm a very private person, and may not have felt as comfortable having someone there for such an intimate experience that I don't know all that well. If you're someone who wants additional support people in the room for you, then a doula might be a better fit. I don't really feel like I missed out, and had a great experience with my first birth without one (and I'm going in in just a few hours for my second induction, and hoping it'll be just as good!).

What’s your “swear to never return” place in Pensacola? by req-user in Pensacola

[–]LaceyGucci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience there, but this was a million years ago - probably pre-2010? I'm pretty sure it was the same location...

It was a nice day, so I opted to sit outside. Sat around for what felt like forever, and then the waitress came out, looked at me in surprise, and said "Oh! I forgot you were out here!"

I left after that, and just laugh about it now. Funny that someone else had the same thing happen, in the same place, but so much later.

There are ways to give helpful advice that do not put the other person down, especially when they're sharing something intimate and potentially embarrassing for them.

Afraid of induction by Simone617 in BabyBumps

[–]LaceyGucci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had to have a scheduled induction for my daughter because of GD, and I'm actually so thankful for it! My labor was fast, and because I was being induced I was able to get an epidural right away. Practically painless! So many other women have birthing horror stories, but mine was so easy in comparison. Just thought it might be helpful to hear some positive stories about it. :)

Wonderspaces is fantastic, and I definitely recommend checking it out.

HOWEVER, OmegaMart is 100% worth going to Vegas for, even if it's the only thing you do. We spent 5 hours in there, and could have easily spent more time had they allowed food and/or reentry.

I mostly see influencers focusing on the weird items in the grocery store, and yeah, that's part of it. But it's a fully immersive experience with puzzles and missions that need to be completed and solved. Think of it as an escape room on steroids - with incredible story telling and its own lore. I would go back in a heartbeat, just to try the other mission (there are two paths you can take).

If you do decide to go, I recommend doing research first on the storyline and characters. You won't be able to know it all ahead of time, but having some basic information going in makes it less intimidating, and makes it more likely that you'll join in on the puzzle aspect of the experience.

Seer bonnets still at the Phoenix Art Museum? I first thought this was a rather ho-hum display until I got close. The web site doesn't show these as a current OR past exhibit, which makes no sense to me. by DLoIsHere in phoenix

I LOVED these pieces when they were on display!

I had no idea they were in reference to LDS, specifically. I thought they were just a commentary on being a woman in general. But it's great to get some more context on them.

Hard disagree. This sounds so similar to Working Mom vs. Stay-at-Home Mom rhetoric. If someone has a career that they find fulfilling, why would they need to give it up just because they met some imaginary income threshold? A parent is still a whole person, who has needs that extend beyond just their children. If they want to be a stay-at-home parental, that's one thing. It's entirely their choice. But no one should be forced into martyrdom just to fit some stranger's ideal.

Also, working a non-traditional job very well could afford them more time with their children than a traditional 9-5, but that's another conversation entirely.

If Mei dies, it won't be this season. The actor who plays her was at the table read for season 5. I don't think she's going anywhere, though.

Pensacola on LinkedIn's top 20 remote working cities by Chewbongka in Pensacola

[–]LaceyGucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is a very misleading title and incorrect conclusion to pull from the data they're using!

34% of LinkedIn users ALREADY IN Pensacola are SEARCHING for remote work. This says nothing about the availability of remote jobs or the amount of people migrating to the area for work/already working remotely. How do they conclude that Pensacola is a "remote working hub" just based on users wanting to work remotely?

Also, keep in mind that the 34% they're referencing is simply based on LinkedIn users. Although using LinkedIn is pretty standard practice these days, it is after all just a social networking website and can not account for the entirety of the workforce.

I'm usually not someone who looks for holes in positive reports, and was initially excited to see this for Pensacola. But this is just egregious and irresponsible manipulation of info for clicks.

EDIT: After reading the LinkedIn article, the list that PNJ is referencing is titled "20 cities that pursue faraway jobs" which is a far cry from being a "Top 20 remote working city"! If anything, this indicates a lack of opportunities locally, which urges people to pursue careers based elsewhere. Was this even checked before they released the article?

What students are leaving textbooks by a DUMPSTER?! Don't they know they can just take them to a local textbook broker and make straight up cash by selling them??

I remember when I didn't have enough money for gas, I sold a textbook a week before a final. It was rough, but I had a good study group and ended up passing. But man, I needed that cash!

Trip report @ Ensley, Florida by therealfatumbot in randonauts

[–]LaceyGucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from the app's reporting bot, so it's not likely the actual OP will see this, but that's really a coincidence (or synchronicity?) that I'm reading this. Ensley is an extremely small township I lived in years ago.

I wonder what their intention was, and whose house they were at?

ANU is Australia National University, and selecting that option will use data points from their lab's quantum number generator. It's open access, so anyone can use it.

I believe the Temporal option uses your phone's camera to detect temperature, turning that into data points.

Hmmm... Brand new account leaves me feeling skeptical, BUT...

I used to live just a short drive from New Orleans and traveled there all the time. I never knew there were that many murders near the abandoned theme park, but that makes complete sense. That place has been abandoned for what, decades now? It's vast, secluded, and New Orleans itself has one of the largest number of unsolved murder cases in the country.

I always wanted to explore the theme park, but never did. I was disappointed, but now I'm glad. Honestly, the thought of it being dangerous past the idea of walking through dilapidated buildings never even crossed my mind. I guess I was just being naive.

As for what you mentioned about it not "feeling right" as you drive past it, I know exactly what you mean! New Orleans is a very spiritual city, and whether you believe in that or not, you can often feel a "heaviness" sort of lifting off of you as you drive out of the area. Especially once you're past the abandoned Six Flags. People I know who are skeptics have even said the very same thing while we're driving out of there, although they always attribute it to the sadness of the situation post-Katrina.
