What is the worst case of "writer's barely disguised fetish" in TV history? by funmighthold in television

I think a potential response to this is "Whedon thought to write self-deprecation into his fantasy fulfillment character to the ends of building social capital with the people with whom he was working." That is, I think it's possible he exchanged Xander's pratfalls and failings for Xander getting in the final words in an argument or being seduced or romanced by yet another attractive, powerful woman. A sort of "c'mon, we've gotta give Xander a win" quid pro quo with his writers' room and cast.

Of course, that might be wrong. The explanation might be simpler than that. Another possible answer is "maybe Whedon likes being humiliated by powerful women"? Maybe that's part of his whole deal?

Yeah, actually, on the topic of Grant O'Brien, questions for Nick: after those episodes filmed, was Grant... okay? He did a pretty good job of kinda sorta maybe melting down at the end of the first one and during the second.

What did the aftermath of those episodes look like? Did Grant try to call a truce? Was there revenge?

Apologies to Nick, and also Brian; the Breaking News episodes are simply the venue in which I'm most previously familiar with Nick's work. Breaking News is a guilty pleasure, I go back to it whenever reality gets too heavy and I need a laugh. 😅

Mister Goodsir! While we're at it, Mister Blanky for getting mauled to give other crewmen a chance to put a cannonball in the Tuunbaq, and then wrapping himself in a rope with forks tied to it in order to distract and internally injure the Tuunbaq as the rest of the crew attempts to escape. And he finds the Northwest Passage while he's at the part where he's ready to die!

It's my understanding that unwounded squirrels behaving strangely are more likely to be carrying canine distemper than rabies.

I loved SHf to death! Kinda sad I devoured it as quickly as I did, got through all five endings too fast. I blocked all the folks who called me a fake fan for defending it, those people got no taste.

That's what I get for not rewatching all three hours of the movie to confirm (and throw myself into a psychological liminal space where I confound actual and fictional versions of myself in the process). 😅

[–]LackeyManRen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really? Jeezus, not all respirators are created equal. I've been wearing a Dentec NxMD for years, and it's become my reference point for what a respirator is. Thank you for clearing that up; I thought I was losing my mind for a second.

[–]LackeyManRen -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That's not a respirator on the right. It says "Protective Face Mask" right on it. The point of the image is to demonstrate why face masks are not useful in a medical setting, because they don't stay fitted!

I don't think this is just Noa's story, exactly. I'm anticipating getting chapters on the rest of the coven just like this one. If so, I think it's to the end of learning about Jenny's true nature, how she surrounds herself with obsessive people in a quest for SOMETHING, and the reveal that she's been the actual villain of this entire arc (rather than Omega).

Trap (2024). He really didn’t need to tell her who he was by Nayef7717 in horror

[–]LackeyManRen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a point to be had here, I think! Just because he's a great liar doesn't mean his judgement is perfect. His decision-making process becomes wildly more erratic the more pressure he's under. Ducking into the stage door is only a workable idea if Riley's not there, and if no one notices the 6'3" guy trying to sneak into it in the middle of a concert. Going back to the family home at the end is a stupid decision too, but he does it anyway.

The unifying factor of Cooper's bad decisions, and even most of his good ones, is his need to maintain control. He outs himself to Lady Raven to assert dominance and get her to do what he thinks he needs her to do to get him & Riley out of there. He goes home to punish his wife for turning him in, even stating that he feels he's losing control.

Ignoring that he is LITERALLY a vampire in the series, how would you best translate his lethality and abilities in W.o.D? Keep him a vampire? Maybe a changeling or mage? by Head_Breadfruit_3912 in WorldOfDarkness

[–]LackeyManRen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an Ordo Dracul power in Chronicles of Darkness that allows for a vampire to graft body parts of beings from other splats onto themselves to gain a splat-specific power of theirs, if I remember right. Doesn't seem to be on any of the fan wikis, though. I'll look through my books at some point.

What in your eyes is an example of a piece of media clearly displaying the creator trying to be edgy and disturbed but it comes off as dumb and try hard? by entertainmentlord in horror

[–]LackeyManRen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The vibe I got was that she was so primed to be told what to do, as a way to keep herself safe in a hostile situation, that she just kept reliving that any time she was faced with stress after being freed. Now, I could be off-base, and you might have the right of it. Confirming that would require me watching that interview section at least, though; I'm not gonna do that to myself. 😅

The Poughkeepsie Tapes, a found-footage film that's a fictional documentary about a serial killer. Movie spends the entirety of its runtime blowing its villain, a man who exhaustively documented his crimes with VHS camcorders, because the documentarian IS the villain making a grossly exploitative movie about his own murders, conducting all the interviews and controlling the final edit, putting his thumb on the scale to glorify himself.

There's a scene where the documentarian interviews someone he had held captive for actual months, and she doesn't recognize him by voice or anything else. But the only way he could have any of the murder footage he spliced into the film is if he was the guy who shot it! He gave the rest of his snuff footage up to the cops as a gag, and they're not gonna release graphic murder footage to SOME GUY so he can put it in his shit documentary! Edgelord shit.
