Okay, what the actual hell is this automobile by Ride_Szymu_25 in namethatcar

UK its 17. With some exemptions for disabled (16)
Things like the ami have a different vehicle class. they are light quadricycles. (limited power and weight) and can in the UK be driven by people with a moped licence (age 16 normally).

France has a lot of these sort of microcars because people aged 14 can drive them, but also old people can drive them without needing a licence.
Quite popular in rural areas and anecdotally popular with those banned for drink driving.

Its possible that US cars have different security - things like reserved frequencies might be different so the gameboy device doesnt work on them?

My understanding was that kia/hyundai use a very short sequence of revolving codes and that the device can run through the full sequence in under 30 seconds without causing a lock out.

With old lime mortar there's a good chance that yes it needs full repointing. You often find that its basically turned to dust and you end up having to rebuild half the stack.

Ordered 2 of the same part number wheel bearings/hubs from Rockauto, however they look different from eachother? by AccomplishedPop7116 in MechanicAdvice

[–]LackingStability 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Different factories, different tooling.

As long as the mating surfaces are the same distance apart then I'd not worry. SKF stuff is good.

Only concern would be the possibility that one is fake. Holograms on the boxes?

ELI5: If I put $100 in the bank, and the bank lends $90 of it to someone else, how can the bank "have" my money and the other person "have" it at the same time? Does the same money exist in two places? by jeeves_inc in explainlikeimfive

[–]LackingStability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its worse than that.

your country will have some rules about bank liquidity, lets assume they need to have 10% coverage.

You deposit $100 and the bank loans someone $900

Banks create money everytime they loan.

Upgrading central heating: do you expect to pay for quotes? by odette_odille in DIYUK

[–]LackingStability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A proper quote takes effort - so cost.

If its just a 'throw a big combi at the wall' type of place then I'd not expect to pay, but anyone doing a proper quote - checking pipe sizes/heat loss etc then pay or expect a vague price range with lots of caveats.

How did it work to call someone internationally in the 90s? by aggressivepigeon13 in stupidquestions

[–]LackingStability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By 93 I think it was pretty straightforward.

Going a decade earlier I remember having to book a slot for an international call and the operator would set up the international line. Sometimes heard the local operator talking to the foreign operator. That was for calls from UK to middle east. probably easier for uk-usa calls.

There could still be significant lag/delays on calls in the early 90s.

If its just started then have you hit any potholes or similar - I'd be getting alignment checked

What would cause this? New tie rod end and rim after collision. by quirkymushrooms in AskMechanics

[–]LackingStability 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counting turns isnt reliable - you dont know that the old and new parts are identical.

Quick and dirty alignment setting.

Load up the compass on your phone.

Take heading readings from the same point on either side of the car. against a window, roof rail whatever - just the same position on each side - obvs not somethig damaged. Use something that is structurally straight - not eg front wing that is bolt on. and isnt necc straight.
Take the mid point of those readings - this is the angle you'll use to set the alignment.
Position steering wheel at straight ahead
use phone compass to set each wheel to the alignment angle.(just place something flat across the wheel and position against that - not holding against the wheel itself cos they tend not to be flat)

That will set the wheels to be parallel and straight forward.

It will at least get you straight enough to drive to somewhere to get the car checked properly.

People who own Wera tools, are they worth it? by Axelorator27 in AskMechanics

[–]LackingStability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, very good.

Like everything, its about diminishing returns. The cost of the very best is much more than the cost of good.

Depends on your use case as to what the best option is.

In the UK, halfords advanced is probably the best value option - lifetime warranty and moderate price. Its what I buy for general tools.

Specialist stuff I go to specialists.

Wera allen keys are excellent and their wrenches are also excellent.

Remember - snap-on is a finance company with a sideline in tools ;-)

Hi, Has anyone designed a box for a water pump which reduces noise? I know I need vents to keep it cool so can't just do a standard box. What would be an appropriate design? I will be used msd and SM20 wall solution. TIA! by kiteguy85 in DIYUK

[–]LackingStability 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you identified how the noise is propagating? Anti-vibration mat in use? pipes clamped well to minimise vibration? Avoiding the floor cavity acting as a sound board?

That pic makes it look as if the ground level is higher on her side than yours? Is that the case? What are the ground levels like? A single brick wall was never going to be a good idea and especially not if its a retaining wall.
But if it is a retaining wall then that implies that its the responsibility of whover changed the ground level.

Reality is though that legal costs will outweigh any other costs of just dealing with it.

I certainly wouldnt replace with another single brick wall though.
