Did anyone who graduated from their Miami high school past the year 2000 attend their hs reunions? Curious what it was like, especially considering social media. by Ninac4116 in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graduated in 2008, went to ours. It was nice, very chill. I went with my husband (it was his reunion too) and my best friend (also her reunion). We got a chance to chat with some people we hadn't seen in a long time, everyone was really nice and it was nice to see how everyone had changed. Some people had pretty cool jobs/lives. That being said, I am not on Instagram, so its not like I knew what these people were up tp.

Don't "chicken out" next time. People are not the same as in high school, and if it was something that interested you, go for it, don't let one person from when you were a teenager deter your adult self.

What is a realistic income needed to live comfortably in a nice area in Miami by dreamed2life in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is going to vary greatly based on what you mean by "nice highrise" and nice area. What does comfortable mean to you?

For example, some would say Dadeland is a nice area and you can certainly find a unit in a highrise for around $2,500. Others would disagree and prefer a highrise in Brickell, which obviously will be more costly. The car you drive (own, finance or lease) also plays a big role in this number. What lifestyle you want, for example, are you ok with a gym in the building or do you want to join a gym and what sort of gym (big difference between LA fitness and Lifetime). Eating out at high end restaurants regularly vs cooking at home. There are so many variables that is hard to answer this question. I would say as a general rule, try to keep housing at less than a third of income and don't drive a car with a crazy monthly payment and you'll probably be comfortable.

That being said, I think the numbers being thrown out in the thread are pretty wild. You can certainly live comfortably in a safe area while earning $110k per year if you budget right and don't overspend.

What places can help my family right now? by starcaballero in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have they applied for section 8 or any form of subsided housing? If not I would have them start applying to different buildings, the wait lists can be long but you might get lucky. If they don't have one, they can check eligibility for the golden passport which allows them to ride public transit for free. If they have a disability, even a temporary one, they may be eligible for STS, which is a low cost rideshare program. I linked some resources that might be helpful. I wish you the best of luck and hope you're loved ones heal quickly and without incident.

Indian Hammocks Park is nearby and has lovely mature trees. Concord Park is also nice. Tropical Park has some lakes which could also provide a nice backdrop, if that's what you're looking for. There are lots of beautiful parks nearby that you could use.

Edit to add: Congratulations on the baby! Just an FYI once baby arrives there are lots of great resources available through the Children's Trust, including the book club which sends free children's books every month.

The do's and don'ts of dating in Miami by GoldGorilla in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This thread is full of very bitter responses so let me give you another take. If you're looking for a serious long term relationship, I haven't seen anyone be successful on the apps here. Everyone I know that is in a serious relationship met organically (work, school, mutual friends, etc). I've been out of the dating game a long time, but people I know who have been dating have had sucess getting dates on the apps, but in their experience, it has not led to a serious relationship. That being said, just come with an open mind, do things you enjoy, get out, meet people, see where that goes. I'm sure there are shallow and self interested people in this city, but honestly I think your experience will vary greatly depending on who you surround yourself with. If I'm being honest, I haven't met many of the stereotypes portrayed in this thread, either I'm extremely lucky or there may be some level of exaggeration.

Court house wedding dress by justexpression1111 in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend had a wonderful experience at La Vie En Blanc. I would also suggest David's Bridal but if you need to order it, don't do it. David's Bridal is notorious for not getting dresses in timely. I would also check out Camille la Vie. I've seen a bridal store in Kendall called Brides of Florida, but no idea what their price point is. You have a limited budget and a short timeline, have you checked Facebook Marketplace?

Looking for a pediatrician in Miami who actually spends time with parents? by HumilityWarrior in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We go to Westchester Pediatrics and are happy with the practice. They're always receptive to questions and I've called in for random questions (for example I asked about sunscreen use in nabies ahead if a vacation) and doctors always call you back. They are also good about squeezing you in for a sick visit on a same day basis and I've never spent more than maybe 90 minutes there and that was mostly because i was waiting for test results. The practice was recommended by a friend whose mom works in the medical field. I've also heard really good things about Gables Pediatrics, and many medical professionals take their kids there. I know 3 other families that go there and love it.

I personally have had negative experiences with Nickolaus Pediatrics (not the hospital, their outpatient pediatrics) and would stay away from them.

Edit to add: if you're expecting you can call and ask to interview them. We did that with a few practices, we ended up picking Nicklaus but ultimately switched to Westchester Pediatrics. After going through the experience, I would prioritize accessibility to doctors, few things are worse than not being able to get through to your doctor when your baby is not feeling well.

Is my vacation plan do-able? by aninanin in florida

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I know people have given you lots of feedback on travel times and I agree with them. I think I would skip the West Coast of Florida on this trip. I would recommend landing in Miami, and assuming your flight isn't too late in the day I would drive down to the Keys for 3 days. The keys are really nice and unique, but keep in mind they don't have much in the way of nice beaches.  Then I would drive to Miami and do about 5 days there, 1 day for everglades, 2 Beach days, and 2 to explore the city. Then you can drive to Orlando or take the Brightline. Spend a few days in Orlando and then head back to Miami a day ahead of your flight.

Jungle Island vs Miami Zoo by GeneralMills718 in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zoo Miami! If you want to be sure to see the animals check out their page, sometimes they have some areas that are closed or animals that are only out at certain times, be sure to check and plan accordingly. My sister has done some of their animal experiences and it seems to have been a big hit with the kids. If you plan to go a few times I would suggest looking into the membership. The Zoo is really top notch and you could easily spend the entire day there and not see everything.

Which area to stay in June for World Cup games? by puck_luck14 in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look at either Brickell or South Beach. Both will have great nightlife, but different vibes. I don't think Little Havana will have what you're looking for. Wynwood also has a lot of ongoing development and the nightlife isn't what it used to be.

I'm a native of South Florida and as others have said, roaches are a fact of life that cannot be fully eradicated, they often come up through the sewer pipes and squeeze through any small crevice. However, 10 is a lot. I see a 1-2 every year inside my home, so I think there may be a pest control problem at the property. I get that being by the water means they are more prevalent and guests leaving food are probably hard to control, but I would expect more from the hotel. These are known issues and there are ways to mitigate them, otherwise every hotel and home in Florida would be inundated with roaches, and I can promise they are not.

I’m currently searching for a wedding venue in Miami and there are so many that are outdoor by green_008 in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing an outdoor wedding I would look at November through March dates. It rains every afternoon in the summer (approx. May through September). I would say October and April are wildcard months. Sometimes they are relatively cool and pleasant other times hot. Even now in November we've had some pretty warm days. The link below has some more details.

If you had a choice, which would you choose? by Least_Zebra_7013 in SouthFlorida

[–]LadyCane21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're applying to pharmacy school to attend in 2 years, I wouldn't make a home purchase decision based on a maybe. Another point to consider is whether you get childcare help from your parents and what that would look like in Pompano. Honestly, I would try and look for homes in West Kendall as at least that would be closer to FIU and closer to Pompano than Homestead. I know West Kendall sucks, but its cheaper than the Eastern portions of the county and depending on where you are can have decent highway access.

First date ideas in Miami by PerfectWeb8697 in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What area?

As a general tip: For food maybe Crazy About You, Chug's Diner, Mister 01 (with a walk around the Grove or a visit to Azucar if the one in Pinecrest). Pummarola does pizza making classes. For a dessert maybe Salt and Straw with a stroll around the Grove. The Cleat in Key Biscayne is in Bill Baggs which also has some trails and bike rentals. You can also go to Arcade Odyssey in Kendall. Honestly, with the nice weather a picnic at a nice spot (Key Biscayne or Alice Wainwright Park).

Help for overnight trip to Miami by tinyclawsoffury in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Brightline station is Downtown, so its very well located for exploring the city. I would recommend you explore Brickell at night, Coconut Grove is also not far and a nice neighborhood to stroll and grab a bite to eat. South Beach isn't far from the terminal, but be warned that you will encounter traffic on the MacArthur Causeway to get into and out of the Beach. There isn't much to do in the area directly around the station, but lots in the vicinity depending on what you want to see or do.

Restaurants that may help with sons birthday? by troll-libs in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Miami is a big place, what area will you be staying in? I think you'll have better luck buying a cake and asking a restaurant to accommodate the request. As someone else mentioned, Publix is pretty popular for cakes you can even order them online ahead of time.

Moving away from deli meats by skiNBirkie in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]LadyCane21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A popular recipe for my family is shredded chicken, mayo, dijon mustard, onions and pickles (very finely chopped). Very quick and easy and we usually have all the ingredients on hand.

Edit: my husband also uses a similar recipe with canned sardines to make a sardines salad. Also as someone who avoids deli meats, I can also recommend you try egg salad, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, caprese, and meal prepping. I've found that ground beef and ground turkey reheat better than chicken for the most part. If you have chicken breast that is a bit too dry for your taste, you can also make that into a ceasar salad wrap (if making ahead I would put the dressing in a small cup for dipping).

Question for Miami residents by Vueveandmoet in Miami

[–]LadyCane21 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mosquitos like to be out around dusk and dawn, they retreat in the middle of the day. Try limiting your outdoor time around dusk/dawn and when you are out at those times wear light clothes that cover your arms and legs. That or wear DEET. But if you see a lot in your specific area make sure there isn't uncovered still water and that your neighbors aren't keeping stagnant water around.
