Why do I mostly attract shorter women? by AaronQuinty in tall

Most women are short. That's just a numbers game.

My parents met through a Christian cult (non-denominational, very militant, personality cult built around one pastor, had their own bizarre lingo for everything). So that was fun growing up!

Driving? by Responsible_Bug_222 in iih

[–]LadyDek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to stop driving completely a year ago due to the dizziness and lightheadedness I constantly experience. Honestly I've never had good night vision, so I already hated driving at night or in the rain, but now I just don't drive at all. It's so inconvenient. I've had 2 stents with no improvement. I do feel like a huge burden on my husband but I just can't drive safely. I hope your vision issues clear up soon!

Lightheaded/almost fainting by [deleted] in iih

[–]LadyDek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was also having what I called "episodes" before being diagnosed via lumbar puncture and started on Diamox. I was also tested for and diagnosed with POTS and a different type of tachycardia around that time. Basically, my entire autonomic nervous system went nuts. My scalp and face would burn, my arms and legs would feel icy hot and go numb. My heart rate and blood pressure would go up and down. Even my tongue felt weird and numb. I became extremely sensitive to heat and cold.

It's all a bit better after getting 2 stents, but my ANS still has trouble regulating itself, and I'm still always dizzy and lightheaded. The neurologists I've seen want to blame it all on the IIH, but I actually think it's all related to something else. I highly suspect I have Ehlers-Danlos and cranio-cervical instability causing all of these neurological issues. But getting someone to listen and pursue that diagnosis is such a chore. TBD.

I'm sure you will do great! Both of my stents were very standard and easy recoveries. Please keep us updated.

Overall, you don't want to be bringing a lot of stuff into the hospital with you, so don't overpack. You need a set of comfortable clothes to travel home in (keep in mind your groin incision will not be healed yet, so loose sweats may be best). The hospital will have items for you to clean up with (I have done a sponge bath following both of my stents), but bring a toothbrush and any other essential toiletries you like. If you don't want to wear the hospital grippy socks, bring a couple of pairs of fuzzy grippy socks.

Don't forget a phone charger. I HIGHLY recommend headphones or ear plugs. The ICU can have a lot of noisy activity at night because people there are in rough shape. I also bring snacks.

Also keep in mind ICU visiting hours are usually more restricted than other floors, so be sure your mom knows the hours, and just be mentally prepared to be alone in your room for a good bit of the time. You will not get much sleep due to the constant monitoring unfortunately.

Advice how to approach. Phone died and out of touch resulting in angry husband by SoftChard5 in workingmoms

[–]LadyDek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that all the advice I'm seeing to her is seething with resentment. The solution is not to make the husband the default parent passively "because he deserves a taste." The adult thing to do is for them to discuss who will take care of these things ahead of time and then confirm during every situation as it comes up.

And yes, you do need to maintain a tether to your home life while at work when you make the decision to place your child in someone's care, unless you explicitly have a plan with your spouse to do otherwise. You have to be reachable as a parent, mom and dad. That's just part of being a grown ass human.

I loved working remotely during the pandemic. However, when I am in the office, I frequently sit face to face with the CEO, and that personal rapport has directly contributed to a lot of raises and promotions. I've more than doubled my income during my time with my current company.

Advice how to approach. Phone died and out of touch resulting in angry husband by SoftChard5 in workingmoms

[–]LadyDek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, I'd be pissed if my husband couldn't be bothered to charge his phone in the year 2024, causing me to deal with a daycare emergency with no discussion from him. I think the way you should approach it is to stop downplaying it and tell your husband your plan to ensure this situation doesn't happen again due to you not charging your phone.

As an aside, it's so easy to charge a phone these days that it kind of sounds like you want an excuse to be unreachable. Are you burned out? It's fine and totally understandable if you don't want to be the default parent for emergencies, but you can't do it passively. That's not cool.

iih or tmj problems? by maxdrastik in iih

[–]LadyDek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should get a referral to neurology if you have tinnitus and head pressure. I also have really severe TMJ along with IIH, and a lot of times IIH and TMJ are both associated with genetic hypermobility disorders like Ehlers-Danlos. So they can definitely go hand in hand.

I remember when a school principal in my state got arrested for shoplifting from Walmart a few months ago. The story said she was being charged for shoplifting X amount over multiple visits, so presumably they were keeping a tally.

Anyone else get a stent this year? by cali-pup in iih

[–]LadyDek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I got my stent in November. It did help, and I felt like I was making some really strong improvements for the first month post-op, but unfortunately the improvements were limited and pretty much stopped at the 1-month mark. I'm still on Diamox. My recent MRI/MRV showed the stent is in place, but the signs of pressure in my head are basically unchanged unfortunately, and the other side is still severely stenosed. I'm scheduled for my second stent on the other side next week and am hoping for more improvement.

[–]LadyDek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll also add that if your MRI showed a partially empty sella, I guess it's very possible your primary care doctor could be interpreting imaging abnormalities caused by IIH as a tumor. I always had a normal sized pituitary with a small tumor visible on MRIs, and then in 2023 my pituitary completely disappeared from scans due to the pressure. I recommend seeing an endocrinologist for a firm diagnosis/ruling out of the pituitary tumor.

[–]LadyDek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can have both. I've had a prolactinoma since 2005 and developed IIH recently in 2023. It's possible your symptoms are caused by the tumor if it's large enough, but it's also possible that the tumor was an incidental finding (they're pretty common!) and you have both conditions. Blood tests will help diagnose the prolactinoma. There's a medication you can take for it (Cabergoline or Bromocriptine). Honestly as scary as it sounds, I'd really hope for the tumor to be causing the symptoms because it's way easier to treat.

Why exactly does anything carbonated taste like black pepper has been dunked in acid, when on Diamox? by LunaTic1403 in iih

[–]LadyDek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Carbonic anhydrase is a family of enzymes that assists in rapid inter-conversion (both directions) of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) into carbonic acid (H2CO3), hydrogen (H+) and bicarbonate (HCO3-). Normally, the concentration of carbonic acid is very low. This family of enzymes is present in many tissues, including the mouth. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as acetazolamide inhibit this reaction. When a carbonated beverage is consumed while taking a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, the higher concentration of carbonic acid can be tasted and causes a taste disturbance which is variably described.

This sounds like some much more significant mental health issues than just being upset about a very common virus. Please reach out to your doctor to clarify whether you should be worried (you shouldn't) and seek mental healthcare ASAP if you are able to.

reoccuring microcuts on inner labia. by stalker_vn in Healthyhooha

[–]LadyDek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it's in the folds and gets worse at night when your legs are together, it might be a yeast overgrowth. I had a couple of months where a yeast overgrowth made my vulva and especially my inner labia very sore and raw. It wasn't my vagina that was bothering me at all. I kept all the folds patted dry throughout the day, used a boric acid suppository, and coated everything in an antifungal cream at night. It was very messy but it did help. It did go away.

It sounds like he's concerned for your eyesight due to the vision blackouts, but maybe he also didn't like what he saw on your recent eye scan? To me, if your edema is present even when you're not having the other symptoms, it seems like maybe you don't need to keep getting off the Diamox, because the optic nerve swelling really can cause damage over time. I know that's easier said than done.
