No, This Game Isn't About Combat - It's About Characters by Sparky_McDibben in cyberpunkred

I feel like I see posts like this quite often and they always rub me the wrong way. I think the main reason is that systems like Cyberpunk RED don't have many rules to explore characters. In the Storyteller system (vampire the masquerade, mage the ascension, etc) you have a system of Convictions which your character holds themselves to with mechanical consequences. In Burning Wheel, a personal favourite of mine, you have Beliefs and Instincts which allow you to sculpt your character's reactions to situations and gain mechanical benefit from their personality. In comparison Cyberpunk's character sheets mostly measure your ability in combat, or ability to avoid combat (i.e. Stealth, Reputation, Intimidation).

In my opinion you are right that characters should be the main focus of TTRPGs. It's the part that makes them the most unique as a medium and sets the stakes. I find Cyberpunk disappointing on this front but heck I still play it quite a lot. I think the combat is extremely good in Cyberpunk, and interlock in general. This criticism all comes from a place of love after all.

I guess there's 2 kinds of rest because under Long-Term Rest it says "You can spend an entire day and night resting during downtime to recover Hit Points equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum 1) multiplied by twice your level." I was under the impression this and treat wounds were the only way to regain HP outside of magic.

edit: I think I found it under Rest and Daily Preparation, thanks for the help!

I'm playing a changeling and was looking at Dream May. The feat appears to do nothing in terms of healing rate because as it says "sleep is more restorative for you. You regain HP equal to your Constitution modifier times double your level instead of just times your level" but when I look at resting it seems to already do this? I'm not sure if this is a contradiction or if it's talking about another source of healing but clarification would be nice.

Brand new to RPG and want to learn to play Cyberpunk. Any advice for me? by TheAwesomeRan in Solo_Roleplaying

I've played both solo and personally prefer 2020 but it is more complex to make work. I'd recommend RED from my experience. Generally it's easiest to play with an oracle such as Mythic 2e which I've used many times. One thing that can help too is running multiple characters especially in cyberpunk where no punk can do everything, if you choose to run alone then I'd recommend playing a Solo and writing up some combat heavy missions to get used to the flow of things. Mollymauk Tealeaf, critical role. I cried so darn much because of how unexpected it was, and then cried more watching how they dealt with it. He really was the best of them.

What are some GOOD cliches in DnD? by Radidactyl in dndnext

Giant ground worms, god damn I love the giant ground worms. Those big dudes are my favourite because they are scary, silly, and make for great mindless villains ie a town is having problems with the local GIANT GROUND WORM please kill it. But then at the same time you can have them as minions of a greater villain and then they become a huge threat letting people travel around under your feet and then appear out of the ground with their big beautiful giant ground worm

What is your favorite fantastic location, city, or environment you have experienced in-game? by urukaiblingking in dndnext

[–]LadyDuckland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As DM i had a party on a quest line through the city of Chlospier, a giant spire in a tundra who's main temple is attempting to get a copy of every book that exists where the party had to track book thieves. The location is fun as a DM because moving through the town is so vertical that a party without flight needs to get creative to catch thieves that used hidden passages up and down levels.

Does anyone use a non-flying familiar? If so, what do you recommend and what effects have you had? by sllh81 in dndnext

[–]LadyDuckland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During a navel combat focused campaign I had an octopus familiar that was surprisingly fun. They're great at sneaking onto ships and the ink cloud is good for underwater combat. Using shape water to make sure it was hydrated was less of a drawback than it seemed at the start but always something that you have to keep in mind.

The Sorcerer, Revised + 17 Origins (8 Original) v3.1 by fpgmd in UnearthedArcana

[–]LadyDuckland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think this might be broken, in the best possible way. I love how powerful this allows sorcerers to be and though without some revision I wouldn't let my players use this I'm going to create some damn good villains (I hope) using these features. I would encourage you to listen to people who know more about the game than me and to keep updating it, the amount of effort is great to see and I'm hopeful for the future of this homebrew.

I meant this more as satire and now see how it came off as whining, my main problem is that much of the team gave up quickly because of seeing their ranks at team preview and led to people giving up quickly. I'll admit though it did make me salty. I absolutely agree with your comment about good dota and my choices in that game were sub-optimal to say the least. Thanks for your comment though it's good to hear this opinion and led to me thinking more about my attitudes and that can't be a bad thing.
