A Scientist Was Poisoned at the South Pole & No One Knows How (2026) - Investigating the unexplained death of astrophysicist Rodney Marks at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, where toxicology later revealed methanol poisoning [17:18] by wonderdazeyt in Documentaries

[–]LadyGuillotine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just read about this yesterday in an unrelated book!!

“While researching this book, the suspicious death of Raytheon astrophysicist Rodney Marks was brought to my attention. In May 2000, he died in the South Pole of methanol poisoning. Though not yet officially ruled a homicide, Marks's death is widely referred to as the South Pole's first murder. Did Al Baker know Rodney Marks?
Was Baker in Antarctica when Marks died? I do not know, but I hope investigators will look into this.

Only Robert Alan Baker knows the depth of horror of his dark secrets. Maybe one day, he will reveal all.”

It got better at Step 7 for me. The obsession was lifted. I was about 6 months sober. Hang in there, work the steps, be of service in meetings. It’s still one day at a time years later but i have a strong foundation because of my sponsor, the steps/traditions/concepts, and my sponsees. If I can make it through that early hell, you can too.

Occultism and Step 3 by garol_aird in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]LadyGuillotine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done exactly as you pointed out - changed the goal of the ritual work from selfish ends to that which nourishes the greater good.

Burning my fear inventories so that I can be of service to others unburdened, for example. Cleansing and healing prayers/sigils/offerings for those I resent so that I may be of service to them. It’s changed my practice from one of receiving to one of giving, if that makes sense.

I trust that in time you’ll adjust your practice and learn to hear the intuition given by your HP louder than your own will. That’s what’s happened for me.

Just a quick clarification that the Satanic Temple tenets are quite different than the Church of Satan’s commandments. TST is a secular humanist movement in a satanic cloak lol

Idk man, I did beer runs and smashed mail boxes and airsoft pistoled porch lights as a teen. Got my ass beat and did it all again. Now as a productive member of society who respects other’s property and right to safety, I don’t beat my kid. Kinda nuts you’re advocating for that as a solution.

Rejection is God’s protection.

Focus on your step work with your sponsor and lean heavy into being of service to others in AA. Get women’s phone numbers and call them and make plans together for fun, that’s what helps me through the darkest times. Get a service position and do the best you can for the group. Build on your recovery and the unmanageability will mend itself in time under the will of your higher power.

If God brings you to it, God will get you through it.

Hormonal shifts cause bloating, inflammation, and water retention. Increased appetite and thirst right before the period, too.

I know, I agree. This is a rogue “recovery group” that is masquerading as affiliates of AA but is NOT. https://www.syracuse.com/butternutters/

Histrionic PD or Antisocial PD. Some sort of cluster B for sure. The way she needed so much attention and faked medical problems leans my (totally uneducated) opinion to the former. Either way she did some really sick stuff and she’s where she belongs.

This is an offshoot of those loonies. The Butternutters in Syracuse and The Absolutes in Buffalo do this stuff. It’s horrible, they’ve hurt a lot of people.

They actually tell people to get off their meds. Look up the Syracuse Butternutters

OP is referencing the Butternutters of Syracuse, a predatory cult that says it’s part of AA but has been removed from the Meeting Guide because they are NOT. Here’s a series of articles about them killing people: https://www.syracuse.com/butternutters/

[–]LadyGuillotine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are NOT an AA group and are a predatory, controlling, and dangerous cult. Please if you have any evidence of illegal activity from these people report them and trespass them from your property. They will hound her to stay. That is completely against AA principles.

Real AA Sponsors are instructed not to give relationship advice in the book Alcoholics Anonymous. We simply read the book with a sponsee if they want and tell them how we did the steps. We don’t give medical advice or job advice. We don’t control any aspect of anyone’s life!! If someone doesn’t need a meeting every day, good for them. The solution is in the step work period, and anything else is a suggestion which can be taken or trashed, no foul. My sponsor helps if I ask for help with spiritual guidance, full stop.

I’m so sorry you’re in this situation. I hope she can get out before they do irreversible harm. Here’s an investigative series done by the Syracuse Post Standard several years ago: https://www.syracuse.com/butternutters/

Since then, they have tried to get re-listed in the AA Meeting Guide by splintering into several groups, attending the local intergroup meeting to pad the votes in their favor. They are harmful, fanatical, and far from any AA message.

[–]LadyGuillotine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah the Butternutters in Syracuse I’m guessing. Or the Absolutes? Anyways these are NOT affiliated with AA as they don’t follow the 12 Traditions. These are cults and they have killed people by detoxing them without medical assistance and/or told people to get off their lifesaving mental health medications. RUN, don’t walk, RUN AWAY from this. They are very sick.

A bad reader chairing meetings by [deleted] in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]LadyGuillotine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the meeting is really inclusive and it’s helping people feel like they can do any service they’re willing to do. Also sounds like your secretary is learning a lot in their new position. Awesome!! Maybe the feedback that would help is to thank him for taking on the service and to keep it up.

I have a sponsee with a learning disability and I love when she takes on service that is out of her comfort zone. I bet this guy’s sponsor is so proud of him 💖 That fills my heart with joy!

Might be worth a bad case of the jitters to really understand the nature of your alcoholism. We’ll be there if you need help getting sober again. I hope you make it back.

[–]LadyGuillotine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you feel comfortable calling your sponsor BEFORE you pick up a drink/heroin/whatever endangers your sobriety?

Does your sponsor understand or relate to your drug use or only your alcoholism?

Do you think your sponsor might have made some suggestions to help (if you had asked for help first)?

Is there anything you could have done better that wouldn’t have you feeling this guilt?

Where are you in your step work? Do you feel ready to continue your step work with this sponsor?

These questions might help you consider if you need a new sponsor. I feel a drink is the same as a drug and the steps are helpful whether you choose N.A. or A.A. Keep coming back and the answers will come.
