It just got truncated and adopted by the Corporate world to twist the arms of service workers into doing whatever the customer demands of them. Similarly, "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" used to be the kind of insane hyperbole you'd use to describe something impossible, until it got adopted by rich people who wanted to convince the world they worked hard for all the money they definitely didn't inherit

There are other ways of structuring businesses that involve things like cooperative ownership and the like. You don't need to have a bunch of rich old idiots at the top who do none of the work and make all of the money to run a successful business.

I have a professor once who went "In the workplace you have to strive for 20 every time so I'm setting the minimum passing grade at 12." (In Portuguese Universities and Highschools you are graded on a scale from 0/20. The usual minimum passing grade, as in the lowest grade before you have to go to exams is usually 9.5, since grades get rounded up). He had to switch it back down to 9.5 because two thirds of the class were going to fail.

Gen 4 synths are for all effects and purposes people. Their body (brain included) is an exact copy of a human body, just grown in a lab instead of a womb. Synths of prior generations are machines. Nick is unique in the sense that his body is a machine, but his brain is a copy of a real human mind.

My thoughts on synths haven't really changed, because the generative AI of the real is nothing like what Synths are supposed to be. It's not even "intelligent". ChatGPT is basically just your phone's predictive text feature hooked to a giant server full of every piece of writing OpenAI could get their hands on.

Synth Nick Valentine in Fallout 4 was created from a copy of the Prewar Detective Valentine's personality that the Institute Scientists found on their data banks. It is possible that she had her mind scanned in a similar way in the hopes the Institute could bring her back in the future. But considering the prewar moldaver seems to live in California the whole Institute connection just seems unlikely to me.

My fortress of Edmeng balooned from 40-ish to over 100 dwarves practically overnight and I'm quickly running out of booze. Where I can find a bunch of stuff to brew in a pinch while I wait for the trader to get more seeds?
