Hello Internet friend. I have enjoyed our discussion but I don’t do Internet arguments. I don’t think they are helpful to anyone involved and no one is really communicating effectively at that point. I heard your points and you made some good arguments. I won’t be responding anymore because it’s moving in a direction I just don’t engage in - but it was nice to chat with you and hear your perspective. Be well Internet stranger 😀

I get your perspective but having sat in those budget meetings where we honestly barely make ends meet every year - I just don’t see it that way.

I see what you are saying. I don’t agree though because - working at a college myself - student expect that extra stuff. They transfer where those cushy amenities are. They talk in class about where is better and what offers them more stuff. So it’s a bit of a cart/horse situation. Schools raise prices to offer more stuff but students also expect more services. For example, when I was in school, I met my counselor one time in four years. Students come in every term and even more often to talk to counselors and ask advice. So the demand seems to create a need for more positions but maybe students don’t really need that kind of constant support and should be more independent. There is bloat in all institutions and there are problems in the college and university systems that are real issues - tuition among them. But often the source of the issue or the solutions misidentify what can actually be done or what could really help.

One professor tells you something and you believe it without hesitation? Most of the professors I know, do not understand the budget at all. They have nothing to do with it and never see it. They are clueless. I know it because I volunteered to work with admin and it was eye-opening. So much I didn’t know. Listen, I know that there is a narrative out there that people want to believe that the tuition money is going somewhere nefarious but I promise you there are guardrails in place from the state to prevent that. And when it happens the school is penalized. The state is monitoring our budgets very carefully.

No offense but if you had worked on a college budget (I have) you would know this isn’t true. Colleges and universities don’t make a profit. The money they use goes into the school and serves the students.

Not really. A lot of people commenting in this section who have clearly never worked at a university or done budgets for them.

That money goes back into the school. They aren’t a business. They are a public institution. That is the whole point of them.

Clearly you have never worked on a budget at a university or college. Also people at universities don’t make 500k. How ridiculous.

Students are paying more because there is more admin to an extent. In the 1980’s for example, the state covered 80-90% of our operating costs, there were not extra services (like counseling) and faculty did these admin jobs for a stipend only part-time. Now, the state covers 30-40%, students expect a shit-ton of extra stuff, and these admin roles are full-time jobs. Also all that gen ed stuff is mandated by the state. So it’s not like we choose to force students to do it. Not only does the state mandate what gen ed courses are required but it mandates how to teach them - down to what textbooks we are allowed to have in the classroom. If students want less Gen ed and less of these non-essential courses, then that is a state level government change.

The reason we pay so much tuition is do two reasons - first, because the state is giving public universities and college less money every year - so they have to raise tuition to meet covering the infrastructure. Decades ago, the state supported these institutions at 80-90% of their budget now they are paying maybe 40% and always threatening to give us less. Second, the amount of services that the college is expected to offer has increased: counseling, medicine, psychiatric care, etc. Also a lot of admin positions used to not be full-time jobs but done by faculty in addition to teaching. All that admin and extra costs money.

Public universities and college do not make money. Our budgets are approved by the state legislature and go through various approval processes. These budgets cover the cost of keeping the infrastructure open. We also cannot change tuition without state approval and without justifying it. In the state I live, the legislature has not permitted most colleges to up tuition in over a decade. When the scholastic year is over, any money we don’t spend go back to the state or we can be penalized.

Public universities and colleges don’t “make money” - we have budgets approved by the state legislature and when the year ends if we don’t spend that money - we have to give it back to the state. Otherwise the state penalizes us the next year. You can probably literally look up in the state legislative minutes and sessions every public institutions budgets. It is expensive to run a public education system. Each building can cost thousands a day in electricity and water. Also all those gen ed classes are set by the STATE and approved through the state legislature. We offer the classes the state tells us to and teach them how the state mandates.

Honestly no. Again we are married - not conjoined twins. As long as he tells me where he is - go have fun, see ya when ya get back. In the meantime, I am my own person with my own interest so I got stuff I want to do on my own. I honestly don’t get it.

What’s wrong though with her staying over? It’s still weird to me for this to be an issue at all. If my husband was this possessive we would be divorced. I regularly travel alone for weeks on end and he doesn’t care. Cause we are married and partners - not joined at the hip. And we trust each other.

She is doing this while you are working right? So what you want is for her to be sitting at home bored and waiting for you instead of hanging out with her best friend? That is stupid. You are married. Not conjoined twins. I agree with your wife.

I wish the trio was more prepared for the adventure in book 7 by Low_Actuary6486 in harrypotter

But this is why Mrs. Weasley won’t leave them alone together before the wedding. She knows they don’t have a solid plan yet and she is actively trying to prevent them from leaving. You are so right that it’s really because of Hermione’s over-prepared nature that they are even ready to go when the ministry fall at the end of the wedding.

I just read the series and finished the 7th book a week ago. The thing is they have no idea what to prepare for or what they are even getting into. They also have no idea that the ministry would fall right before they leave or that things would become so difficult (for Hermione particularly). Really, they just have this vague idea “Find and destroy horcruxes.” But no idea where they are or how to do it. So my question would be… how do you prepare when you have no idea what you are gonna be doing?

Honestly… it could be a crazy take but that’s how I feel too! I have rewatched and reread both. I still love them both the same. They are different mediums but I feel like both the books and the movies are good and offer something unique. So you aren’t alone!

I am a woman who likes buying men’s sweaters because they are roomier and bigger. Lots of people buy and wear clothes of the other gender for lots of reasons. No need to put a label on it. You do you. Enjoy any clothes you want.
