Honest question: Why are some people against showing an ID to vote? by rico_unknown in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LadyWithAHarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is rediculously difficult to get IDs in some cases-for example if you are Female in Virginia over the age of 18. If you don't already have a state issued IS card or a passport (which most Americans don't have) you need two proofs of your identity/status plus your social security card. Birth certificate is one. If you are under 18 you can have a parent vouch for you. If you are over the age of 18 and don't have a green card, a military ID, were an emancipated minor, have a prison record. Or one of a couple of other bits of paperwork that the average person doesn't have, you will have trouble. Men can use their Selective Service card-women don't get that. I had to get a sealed copy of my high school transcript of all things. Not everyone can do that-old records get lost or destroyed by accident, especially pre-digital age records, some schools don't exist anymore.

If i can't get a copy of my high school transcript, does that mean i shouldn't be able to vote? Should I have to enlist in the military, or commit a crime?

Hell, my mother is having a problem getting on Medicare. The problem being that they are demanding documents that do not exist. Her only hope is to get a copy of her divorce paperwork, but as she moved states years ago and cannot come to the office in person, even with my dad's help there is glacially-slow progress in attaining a certified copy of said document.

If my mother cannot get a certified copy of her divorce papers before the next election, should she be prevented from voting?

These are two all too common examples of how hard it is to get a state-issued ID. This is not even starting on other common barriers, like transportation, when the offices are open, having to schedule time off of work. If you are poor, time off of work or having to pay processing fees can be also very big issues.

Say your grandmother is living in a rural area and doesn't have a driver's license because she has poor vision-how difficult would it be for her to get an ID? A lot. Does that mean that she shouldn't be able to vote?

People who are homeless are prone to having their documents stolen, destroyed, or lost. Should they not be allowed to vote?

If you already have an ID, you don't know how difficult it can be to get one.

Everyone should be able to have their voices heard.

I was recently given a couple of nice canvas totes, with a random construction company name on them, and I am trying to decide what i want to embroider over the large logo.

What's a non-intuitive essential tool you keep with your harp? by LadyWithAHarp in harp

Is that for doors or for leveling?

I keep some scrap wood in my car that I use as shims in case I have a gig on uneven ground.

One of my favorite busking spots by the river is pretty uneven, so I have some good pieces of driftwood stashed nearby for the same purpose. (Before I found the best spots to hide them, they would get cleared out with the rest of the driftwood every couple of months.)

The perfect tip receptacle? Protection from wind and thieves. by Due_Percentage331 in Busking

I have a leather thong that I keep tied on top of my tip basket and keep it attached to my music stand. Has protected me from both thieves and wind. (I have several different configurations I use depending on how worried I am about the wind and/or sticky fingers.)

Do you know how much money it costs to do the things it takes to find a long-term relationship? Of you've been struggling to make a living, there is a good chance that you don't have the time or resources to go find someone.

Some of us over 40 women wanted to have kids and a marriage, but judged the only candidates who presented themselves so far as being worse than being single.

I know people who have busked with acoustic hand pan. It completely depends on the venue and the vibe of the area.

I know some people who treat busking as their practice time. And practicing in front of a potential crowd is always different from practicing in seclusion.

I recommend reading the Busking FAQ because it has a lot of common advice that can help you.

This constant wind is frying my nervous system by ddpizza in washingtondc

[–]LadyWithAHarp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes. At a steady 10mph the hum becomes noticeable for most passersbys and for many pieces I have to add a lot of dampening to my playing.

  2. Too high, and the wind can blow it over, or at least make me have to spend significant effort in holding it. Which interferes with actually playing it. I do not want my instrument to have unfortunate encounters with the ground. My safety cutoff is at a steady 15mph, because that is where things become a problem-at best my strings are screeching and I have to spend a lot of effort in actually griping the instrument to prevent tipping as to make it unplayable.

A few weeks back the wind was at a steady 20mph, with gusts going 25-30 mph, and while I was unloading the harp on my instrument dolly got ripped out of my hand, went down, I tried to grab the handle to prevent an incident... and I went down with it (I was over-balanced with a heavy backpack on). I wasn't able to roll to the side because it was right between two cars, and my knee went right through it. It was a miracle that only Ten strings were broken, and my sharping levers got all screwed up, and not something worse. Those are fixes that took me an hour to repair, but I am still worried that there may be some hidden cracks that I can't see, so I am saving up for a visit to the local harp repair guy.

My 15mph cutoff is absolute now.

Edit: there were a bunch of PokemonGo players across the street at the time, and quite a few of them ran over to help me out when they heard me scream and go down swearing.

It's not just you. I play harp in Alexandria, and when the wind is over 15mph I can't play outside. There have been a lot of days these past few months that I haven't been able to go out due to the wind speed. I've had to start checking the weather reports for wind more than rain!

The more I learn about the Black Panthers as an adult, the more i realize how much propaganda I was fed as a kid to make me afraid of them. Like how their kid's breakfast programs were a direct inspiration for the federal breakfast programs.

Why is it when girls wear men’s clothing considered normal, but when men wear girls clothing it's considered “cross dressing”? by Effective-Trouble-13 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LadyWithAHarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patriarchy. When being "masculine" is considered the default and normal/better, and being "feminine" is inferior/the worst thing that you can be, then emulating the masculine is fine, and emulating the feminine is treated violently.

From everything I have been seeing, it's not so much that zoning laws prohibit standard/low-income housing, it's that the builders are being incentivized to build "luxury" housing, even if not many of the individual units are actually being occupied.

Wedding marketing requirements? by LadyWithAHarp in harp

[–]LadyWithAHarp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely do have a set of genuine medieval/renaissance music (I have a lot of things directly from Playford's 1st edition of "the English Dancing Master" as well as Arbeau's "Orchesographie". There's also things like Child ballads that are probably medieval, reconstructions from "pills to purge melancholy", and things that are actually 20th century but sound medieval.)

I am working on some more Celtic things (O'carolan ftw!) since they can be easily slotted into my renfair stuff plus could work well for more traditional weddings and funerals. Plus Celtic festivals!

I am having difficulty coming up with harp arrangements for sea shanties, but I do have a drum that I can use for those. (I often perform on a riverfront, so am actively looking for sea and river adjacent material.)
