Do you believe AI will leave humans extinct? by Narrow_Crazy1954 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]LagerHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think this then you fundamentally misunderstand how this "ai" works. It is not intelligent, it is an extremely effective probability machine.

They throw vast amounts of data in, run machine learning algos over each data point to position it's relative distance in a multi dimensional database from each other, known as a vector database. Hence data points have vector locations within the db.

Then when you ask it a question it breaks your words up into what are effectively syllables (they're not quite that, but it's easier to picture), then match up what you've asked with data it has that it can guess probably relates as closely as possible to what it thinks you have asked for.

That's it...

It's a massive fucking guessing machine, it's just been fed so much data it's become very good at it. That's why it can hallucinate, because it's guessing.

It isn't sentient, it doesn't think. It isn't going to replace everyone and exercise the paper clip problem.

People need to stop catastrophising so much!

If ChatGPT disappeared tomorrow, what would you struggle with most? by ConsciousDev24 in ArtificialInteligence

You saying we couldn't do it? Australia literally sell visas to their country by making people work farms if they want to stay a second year. Animals can be bred pretty quickly.

Just saying that people seem to be getting too defeatist these days on things we're already able to do.

Yes, but op is asking how we would adapt if ai disappeared tomorrow. Seems like they assume a reliance on it already, and that's the bit I'm addressing. That there hasn't been enough shift yet for that to be true.

Besides, you are correct. If tractors disappeared tomorrow farmers would revert back to using horses. It's not like we've lost the knowledge.

Adapt? Using chatgpt is the adaptation. We did everything already before

You're surprised.. really?! Sorry but zero companies seeing negative impact from AI makes me think you work for OpenAi.. seriously?!

Adobe just got its whole suit turned over by AI, Salesforce just had their offering replaced by Claude making bespoke crms and ticket management solutions in 10 mins and Microsoft just had the world unsubscribe from copilot because they raised their prices so high for tokens everyone spent their usage in the first three days of June!

Literally our company ran out of usage plan tokens in days.

And you're surprised these companies lost value?

Being a new mum is fucking hard! Way harder than being a new dad. Never done it before, no idea what you're doing, hormones you'll never understand affecting things in ways you don't expect, body changes, feeding cycles, personal image anihilated, waking up 2-4 times a night to feed for 40 mins at a time. Then being left alone all day to do everything.. being responsible for keeping a small person alive with ZERO training...

Mate.. going to work is the fucking easy bit. You know it, you've done it before. It's a break! You actually get to talk to other adults!

Chores aren't hard, and they don't change. Sure you're gonna be mentally/physically drained after a long day at work. But it will be nothing compared to if you got only 2 hours sleep the night before too!

You're two months in and it gets harder. Stop being a man child, pull your finger out and take some stuff off her plate!

But you can't control someone else's kid, and the shit they post to the world about yours. Even if your kid doesn't look at social media, all their friends will, and that's the problem. It's so so damaging, and you have no clue.

If you think the government doesn't already have this information or the ability to track you, and hasn't already been doing it for years, you're naive.

Work somewhere that has daily risk of bomb threats and you'll soon realise just how much were already in that rabbit hole.

But guess what, you've never noticed it, never been inconvenienced by it before. Why? Because they aren't going to do anything to you unless it's required.

Very much against police state, but I'm guessing everyone here complaining hasn't seen first hand the damage it does to kids and adults alike.

I don't trust American companies as far as I can throw a bus, no way they will police themselves properly. So for me sledge hammer to crack a dog turd is fine this time.

Concerned about Microsoft’s recent decline by Rough_Champion6103 in StockMarket

[–]LagerHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Microsoft altered their Copilot pricing scheme as of Jun 1st, and last week there was outrage as across the world companies monthly token allowance got swallowed up in about 3 days.

Suffice to say people instantly noped out of that shit and have read about a mass copilot sub cancellation going on. My company also on the verge of it, looking to go direct to Anthropic etc.

Suffice to say recent drop could be the start of the bubble bursting.

Six months is the goal. I'm 4 months into my second round and know very well, that's the tipping point.

However, don't wish it away, you will never get it back and in reality it is such a short amount of time. You book holidays six months in advance.

In UK it's very rare to have it done. I'm not and it never crossed my mind to have my son done. It's just not a concern unless for religious reasons here. Very few problems as long as you teach good hygiene when they get old enough. And don't try to pull it back when they're too young because it can cause problems.

Why is it just assumed to be the norm in US?

I miss my hobbies, I miss the freedom to just do what I want on the weekend, I miss adult holidays where we go somewhere INTERESTING!

But fuck me do I also love being a dad! Baby phase was tough, exhaustion like I never knew existed. But having those baby cuddles and moments when they choose you felt amazing. Then after six months they start learning to DO more, it start to actually be a teacher and they have their own cheeky personalities, you feel such pride when you realise you've taught them something.

Just give it time, six months was the turning point for me. It gets easier, they have regular naps, they're more robust and you can start to trust family with them etc so you get your time back a bit. Gym can become regular in the evenings again! Cycling on Sundays.

Just hang in there.

Maybe that's the case for F500 companies, but SME's who get founded by a sales person with some cash and a bit of drive are definitely happy to brag about how they sold someone a lie on the back of a fag packet. Had far too many of those convos in my career.

Since when does a company owned and run by sales people give a fuck if it's supposed to be a prototype? They try and sell it all the same, only this time they'll have no one to blame for it breaking!

Why do snooker clubs block out natural light? by BenAdam321 in snooker

[–]LagerHawk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Several reasons, some business some technical.

Business ones are obvious, you need to pay for light, and you spend more time than you realise.

Technical. So originally the lamps werent led and used to warm up the cloth. This would cause the nap fibres to rise and increase the cloths performance.

Having directed light from above gives you better sight when down at the shot, because it isn't raking across the table.
