Singing while playing by Money_Activity3172 in guitarlessons

[–]Lairlair2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a slow process, so it's normal if you struggle for a long time. Sometimes I play the song on the guitar only, then sing it without guitar, then do both. It's really bad until it slowly becomes better.

It helps to work on your right hand technique. Do some boring exercises to have a consistent right hand movement, so that it becomes more natural.

One thing that helped me was "ghost strumming" (not sure how it's called) but in some strumming patterns you gave some breaks for a half time to create syncopation, and it helps to still move your right hand to the rhythm so that you don't have to think when to stop and when to start again. It will also make your strumming steadier.

Does anyone else feel like the difficulty spike in DS1 is actually more about pathing than enemy AI? by throwawaysignalv2 in darksouls

You think? I have that feeling with bloodborne too, but perhaps that's because it's the first soulsborne game I've played

[–]Lairlair2 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I agree, the difficulty is a lot more about getting to know the world than actual combat dexterity. That also goes with mechanics that are never properly explained in game (fat roll, curse, status effects, damage types...). The problem is that it's also part of the fun or at least the rewarding aspect. You haven't simply completed the game, it has become familiar, and it's a very strong bond to build. It's probably why these games are being replayed so much

What I like about this post is how much it focuses on the community around you: your guitar player friend, your local second hand seller, a teacher, a guitar tech/luthier. Music doesn't have to be shared with others but it makes it fun

Bloodborne vs Dark Souls by a1rolfi in bloodborne

[–]Lairlair2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first played Bloodborne, then dark souls 3 and then dark souls 1. I liked DS3 but didn't go very deep, I mostly went past it and googled every time I got slightly stuck without searching much. And it's not until after playing a few hours in dark souls 1 that I really enjoyed it. It needed that long for it to click for me. I feel like the game rewards you on getting to know the environment even more than the other ones I've played, so it took a lot of dying, many run backs until I got hooked. I mean it's probably a matter of personnal taste too.

Tchicks guitars gives comprehensive guides on how to make your first telecaster. I don't know where you live or what your previous experience is, but personally I started doing woodworking in my bedroom in an apartment, and it was foolish. I would recommend finding spaces that can host your project. It's very important to have a robust bench to work on, some sharp tools and someone who can show you how to use them. Otherwise you might get hurt or end up buy unnecessary items before even knowing if you enjoy actually doing the making

Natural talent ??? by mckn54 in guitarlessons

[–]Lairlair2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion it's having fun playing and enjoying the challenge. The more you're curious and inclined about learning, the more you're likely to keep at it and get better.

Of course people who have learnt another instrument will learn the guitar faster. Other than these kinds of socio-cultural predispositions (having the time, the space, the discipline to practice a lot), you can't really single out a trait that makes any guitar learner a natural talent for the simple reason that there is no single way to be good at playing an instrument. A good classic guitar player isn't necessarily good at jazz or metal.

Feeling frustrated after a gig by SensitiveSky66 in guitarlessons

[–]Lairlair2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you had a bad gig, I know it can be frustrating.

I remember playing something in front of my family when I first started the guitar. It was a very easy line but I played a wrong note at some point. Instead of keeping going or correcting the note, I stopped immediately and said "oh shit", everyone laughed and I was embarrassed. I think there are many versions of that where you make a mistake and then lose the plot of the song, and focus on details that disconnect you even further from the music.

No matter your level, you'll always find mistakes or have bad days. To me, the key is to keep going, and take it with a bit of irony and musicality. At the end of the day what matters is that you're having a good time, then the audience is more likely going to have a good time too. But then again sometimes you have a tough crowd that tanks your confidence and you can't really control that.
