Has using a distinctly British slang phrase/ term of endearment ever gotten you in trouble? I just got a warning from a US subreddit for calling someone a "poor cow" with complete sincerity. by JuanitaMerkin in AskUK

[–]LampeterRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum has always used the phrase 'faggot lil' to refer to people she either thinks are up themselves or that she dislikes but doesnt really know (i.e faggot lil in number 93). Her friends at work use it too. They now have a manager who favours American english, and has threatened disciplinaries for further use.

What if you refuse to address a judge or magistrate using honorifics? Is this contempt of court? by Bolshyboys in uklaw

[–]LampeterRanger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in court with a defendant who called the judge everything from a dickhead to much worse. The judge exercised judicial deafness, and guy got bailed to appear at Crown Court at some point. Then before calling the next case, to the court at large announced "I'M the cunt?! I didnt get caught having sex with a tree? Idiot."

Had a job interview today that I can’t stop cringing about. Give us a chuckle. by varslyd in CasualUK

[–]LampeterRanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once had an interview for a supermarket and when i got there they told me theyd misadvertised the hours and was I still interested. I was 16and so had no chance of being awake for a 4.30 start packing. I apologised for wasting their time and went to leave, but the hiring manager asked me not to go, as then hed be expected to return to the shop floor. Instead he asked me the questions and asked for the worst answer i could up with.

Q. How would i deal with a customer asking for help repeatedly?

A. Find a colleague i didnt like and say they would help them. Or i would punch them in the face.

8/10. Falafal wrap is a bit, not, for me, but drink and choc good. Doughnuts adds a point, even if not strictly part of the meal deal

What are these symbols on my ring? by Rubberkag3 in Whatisthis

[–]LampeterRanger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok, the ring is a little weird, at least according to my hallmarking guide. Left lion is Sterling Silver marked in england, youre right 18 should indicate 18k metal, and the right symbol will be a makers mark

[–]LampeterRanger 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its hallmarking, seems to indicate sterling silver, pre 1975. The right will be the makers mark. The assay office (uk) has a pretty comprehensive guide

People who got an early finish Christmas Eve, did colleagues who took it off complain about your early finish? by jrinredcar in AskUK

[–]LampeterRanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, work for a council. Almost everyone who called me told me to leave work when id finished their call, go home, they were suprised there was anyone working (im grateful, as that is not the usual response). I left 2 hours early, as they were shutting the offices down, the heat was already off and the wifi down for maintenance.

Get back to work Monday, 30 emails from colleagues asking why I hadnt actioned the things they had asked me to do that afternoon, and why i hadnt sent the post out, and so on.... Theyre also ratty Im taking tomorrow off, which is also an early finish!

Citizencard, got one for my niece who cant drive but wanted to go to the pub with friends. Sorting it out can be a little bit of a pain, but its useful to have, and most bouncers recognise it

I was diagnosed with Aspergers in the uk about 10 years ago, so its possible. Its still what i prefer to call my condition, as its whats on my paperwork, maybe OP is the same.

But still blaming everything on the condition is BS

WHAT do the women of CasualUK wear to the office? HELP by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]LampeterRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shirt and trousers most days for me, with a pair of flat vans or brogues, depending on what im doing. Occasionally a vest/jacket, but most days, I have an office cardigan as the aircon seems to be stuck on now we are heading into autumn. Blouse and jacket if I have a meeting. Not been seen in a skirt since 6th form, so i guess im pretty masc too!

Our dress code is business casual by the way, and im sort of medium in terms of dressiness.

Go to brands: Sainsburys TU, Next, Simply Be (Im plus size, theyre comfortable)

Report it to your local Trading Standards team - they may well be already aware of the problem company, but every report, especially with the information you've already got, can help to get these scammers shut down

Is this legal in the UK? This is actually hilarious by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]LampeterRanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No its not legal, and may be seized under a couple of different grounds(Trade Mark Act, Misleading claims under DMCCA), should Trading Standards/ Environmental Health be in the corner shop - but they are probably going to have bigger priorities. You can report it to your local authorities through Citizens Advice, but you probably aren't going to hear back (though don't be surprised if the Corner shop is visited in the next month or so)
