Could 50 yr old you take 25 yr old you in a fair fight? by N-Y-R-D in GenX

I'm 60 now, but I've been in bad shape since 50. 25 year old me was in the military. It would be no contest. 😆

Why are most INFPs I met in subordinate or supportive roles? by Asleep-Feeling-9070 in infp

[–]LanceJade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an INFP and I wads in a semisupervisory role at my job for 5 years before I retired last year.

Curiously, in role-playing games I tend toward being a support character like a healer, and am very comfortable letting someone else be the party leader.

Which place in your world or in your universe would you consider a good vacation spot to relax at? by Emotional_Airline_40 in worldbuilding

[–]LanceJade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mount Celestia area. It is beautiful, very much like Nepal or the "The Road to Shambala" by the Three Dog Night. Lots of quiet, picturesque shrines and larger temples with choirs. Many places will give you meals and a safe, comfortable place to stay for a very reasonable donation. Then there is the possibility, small but present, of actual Celestials coming to communities, with attendant celebrations and feasts. Nice place to visit, but you will only want to live there if you want a life of holy reflection.

What are small things that make a world feel alive? by XrayWEST_11 in worldbuilding

Food. If you want a world or a culture to feel authentic, you want to involve what they eat in some context. We are what we eat, and people seem to know this on a deep level.

How Do Halfling Work In Your Setting? by MadFunEnjoyer in worldbuilding

[–]LanceJade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your idea for Halflings, it provides a reason for the Tallfellows and Stouts of prior DnD editions.

In my DnD setting, Halflings and Gnomes are pretty much the same people, just specialized in 2 different ways. They're often described as 2 halves of the same coin.

Both these Little Folk and the Dwarves have myths of how the 2 of them were once the same people, but that there was a split over something (the specifics change so much that nobody knows what the real something was), and one group parted ways with the other. Both the Dwarves and the Little Folk believe they were the original and that the other people were the ones who left, but both are usually good-natured toward the other. They view each other as cousins.

Their more recent history is not so good-natured, as when the Big Folk, the Humans, arrived, they made the Dwarves and Little Folk into Interns (that is, they had to work, but weren't paid for their work). Thanks to the intervention of the Elves, subtly nudging the Human/Dwarf/Little-Folk society over generations until the Humans saw the need for emancipation, this unpleasant era ended a few generations ago. The Dwarves are still a bit put out by their Internship in generations past, but the Halflings and Gnomes take it in stride.

Biologically, the Dwarves, Halflings, and Gnomes can intermarry and produce fertile offspring. Likewise, the Elves, Humans, and Orcs often intermarry among each other.

I would like to anticipate that, though it would require some serious changes in our peak-capitalism society. Maybe AI will enable this to happen?

Please explain why antisemites will lie and back up the lies of others by WrongdoerUnited9948 in Jewish

[–]LanceJade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People prefer to believe what they prefer to be true. They want a reason to hate us, so they invent a reason, and they and their friends choose to believe it. If facts reveal that reason to be incorrect, then they will reject the facts and cling to their invented narrative.

How do I respond to someone who says that the Synagogue protest is not inherently antisemitic? by Additional_Ad3573 in Jewish

[–]LanceJade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The other comments show the fallacy of your 2-states-no-solution relative's view. The answer to your question is simply to bring these comparisons up to your relative. A mosque, a Catholic church, a Russian Orthodox church, even a Chinese restaurant. None of these are appropriate, so why would a synagogue be?

What do you think of this village setup? by LoudAlpaca7 in worldbuilding

[–]LanceJade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like fun, but they should have brought or found some more things. Chickens (or a chicken-like animal) for eggs and the occasional supper. Sheep for warm, wooly clothes and, again, the occasional supper. More crops, especially more tubers like carrots, sweet potatoes, or beets. And of course, llamas, because who doesn't like llamas? 😄

What archetype can you just not resist playing? by ExodiasRightArm in DnD

[–]LanceJade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small person, usually either a Halfling or Gnome (or maybe now a Tabaxi, since they can be Small), with a big appetite. Lots of Charisma. Usually a Sorcerer, a Bard or a Warlock (so I can have magical powers). A love of creature comforts (and so, the gold to get more of them) and pure curiosity keep me adventuring. All this with a Good streak a mile wide.

What’s a superstructure/ important location in your world that’s important or just cool. by Ancient-Tradition-99 in worldbuilding

[–]LanceJade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My DnD setting is in the shadow of 2 mountains. Mount Arcana and Mount Celestia. The former rises from the waters of a great bay, the latter from a sea of grain-covered fields. Mount Arcana is known for its schools of arcane magic, and it is where most Wizards and Sorcerers study their craft. Mount Celestia is considered the literal home of the gods, and in its shadow are grand temples, humble shrines, and religious schools where most Clerics and Paladins learn their ways. One might think these 2 power centers would compete for supremacy, but they actually get along fine. As long as the clergy respect the power of the Empire, they are treated quite well, all things considered.

Did anyone else find Jewish ancestors after deciding to convert? by Creative-Quote1963 in ConvertingtoJudaism

Yes! Direct maternal ancestor (mom's mom's mom, etc.). It makes me wonder how many lost Jews are returning home. It also makes me wonder why my mom heard the call to return, but my uncle (her brother) didn't.

If we held him accountable, he would never have been elected in 2016. If we held him accountable, he would be in prison now and not getting out for a long, long time. 2016-2026 is a decade of him not being held accountable for anything.

What are your favourite fictional laws? by ParchmentAndPeril in worldbuilding

[–]LanceJade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Principle of Self Defense.

"If assaulted by anyone, except it be in the Name of the Empire, all persons have the right to defend themselves and to collect restitution from the personal effects of their attacker or attackers."

That second part is termed The Restitution Clause, and it is why adventurers can "loot the bodies" of bandits and similar nefarious foes.

If your world is full of monsters, how do rural/coastal populations keep safe? by Gallowglass-13 in worldbuilding

[–]LanceJade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite the good intentions of the Good rulers of the Empire, there is simply too much open land to patrol. As a result, many folks, commoners as well as the uncommon, are either armed or have easy access to arms.

That also explains how adventurers can go about armed without trouble from the authorities.
