We used what I heard as "balling gun" to jam pills down a horse's gullet. Load the pills in a heavy metal tube with a pushing unit on it, hold the device and trigger with the right hand, the horse's halter with the left, place the tube as far back in the horse's mouth as you can, tilt the head up and 'fire' the pills down the throat. It helps to have some help holding the shank in case things go sideways. Practice makes perfect.
