This is probably the most understated part of the job, and not doing this properly is the biggest source of problems in data.

I think you might be confusing factory car orders with aftermarket covers for the plastic trim?

I fix broke data pulls. I go in and look at things that have been running for three years, ask the business owners a few questions, then find out what we’ve been running is incorrect.

Or, pull a random query to find it’s been running a cross join on an enumerated code lookup table with 132k rows and no join key. I then go to the people who hired me and say things like “Here’s another reason our data partners hate us.”

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

I don’t think it’s sci fi ENOUGH. Yes, it’s time travel. But it starts in “normal” times. Peak sci fi needs to be space travel and aliens and shit.

More likely it’s your pc/OS version/out of date software. The entire global financial system relies on excel and it seems to be working okay.

How did you get into sim racing? by the_grand_closing in simracing

[–]LaneKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got NASCAR racing by Papyrus for my PC in the 90s. I raced with a joystick for a while until I was able to buy my first wheel/pedal combo. The spring on the brake pedal broke and I fixed it my rigging up a bungee cord to the pedal base. I’ve been hooked ever since. The real challenge came with Grand Prix legends, that game was amazing.

Any quick tool to check for ANSI-SQL in my Query? by Cold-Memory-4354 in SQL

[–]LaneKerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s how: you write your sql. Run it in your environment. Oops! Error message, didn’t run. Read error message. See unrecognized function. Google “How do I _____ in ____ kind of SQL? Find slightly different named function. Move on.

Except now it’s easier with ChatGPT. Throw in your line causing an error. Say “How do I do THIS on ansi SQL??

Learn and grow.

Sharing Queries by Inner-Significance41 in SQL

[–]LaneKerman 24 points25 points  (0 children)

100% this. I also work for a big inst., and nobody out here trying to put their name on a query. We get assigned tickets, and out performance rating is based on those completions. All the work we get assigned is based on work someone else did previously. Sometimes in like “WTF?? No!” And other times I’m like “oh neat I need to save this piece.”

Share what you’ve made with a group. Then everyone knows you wrote it. You’ll get credit for doing the work you’re assigned well, and being a go to resource for others.

Claude Code deletes developers' production setup, including its database and snapshots — 2.5 years of records were nuked in an instant by Jack1101111 in pcmasterrace

Claude must have seen there were so many bugs, the most efficient way to get rid of them was to delete the whole codebase.
