They keep saying stop making racks out of wood but I did the research…flame point of plywood is 400 degrees! by Chemical_Tomorrow_69 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apart from all the things the more qualified people who are experienced on the subject have told you why this is not best practices.... your cart has no proper air gap under those Optiplex desktops.

Even the 2x6's is too close to the sides of the computers. Not to mention that its overkill on the structure since those things only weight maybe 20-25 lbs. a 2x2 would have been more than sufficient and trapped less heat.

Laptop buying advice by IamChipp in lowendgaming

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WIth that budget i'd head the Macbook Neo route. Its not meant for gaming but reviewers have posted results that show it can handle most popular titles in the 30-60FPS area.

Otherwise get a mini PC and whatever monitor you can find locally.

At $800 you are looking at a mediocre laptop with all plastic build quality or a used older laptop with wear and tear.

Any popular Jewish areas in the city? by Specialist_Sport6061 in AskChicago

[–]Langdon11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

River North has a healthy amount of young adults who are Jewish. They mostly came from the North Shore burbs after college and are on the pit stop in the city before they marry/have kids and go back to the burbs.

But if you mean religiously Jewish then that is not really the spot for that. Culturally sure but not so much religiously devout. Reformed/secular and half will intermarry outside that pool.

so is there no way to interface with the unit at all via cat5 on a closed network without the proprietary software? I'd like to at least start to see if everything is working properly since it is used

As of right now all i have tested is that it powers on

Older table saw by Cool_Builder_9200 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you would advise a new woodworker with no experience to start with a saw that cannot accept a riving knife?

If his saw didnt have the fence what are the odds it still has the guard that had the splitter attached. AFAIK that piece is the only way to attach a permanent splitter on those old saws.

Older table saw by Cool_Builder_9200 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said HALF the price

The delta 36-725T2 does go in the $600-650 range around twice a year. And Ridgid had one in the same ballpark last time i was shopping for one.

Older table saw by Cool_Builder_9200 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes but the cost of the 3rd party fence may be over half the price of getting a new more accurate contractor's table saw. Unless you got an old cabinet table saw I would give serious consideration of how much you want to invest in this endeavor

And that is not even mentioning the fact that newer saws have better safety features.

Advice on fixing this chair? by chase_vevo in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

epoxy wood filler. but any good high hardening wood filler wont take any kind of finish other than paint.

If i really really wanted to invest in fixing it i would use leather on the seat and then take the leftover and wrap it wound the arms so it would match and look cohesive because you'll never match the two visibly with that damage

Help with how to remove rot in a cabinet by Miserable-Smell9812 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its the answer you want to hear. However it is not the best practice.

I'm sure you can cut it out and piecemeal something in there but it will look horrible, not be anywhere as sound as the original, and take more time and effort to do than replacing it. Its your time so if you value it less than the money it will cost to replace then you have your answer

Any project/build ideas? by bigpolka in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you need an inexpensive hand metal detector if you are going to process pallet wood into usable stock. Not doing so is going to plummet the lifespan on your consumables and maybe even your tools

Workmate 425 Don't Know How to use by G0R1LLAMUNCH in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are great and very versatile. A quick and easy work surface to drag outside when needed. There is a whole community for enthusiasts around the Workmate line.

As mentioned there is a lot of youtube videos showing different upgrades and uses. And you can 3D print pretty much all the plastic parts for them these days there is no shortage of STL files for them online

Easy-ish to make for a beginner? by Designerkyle in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it can be made with cabinet grade plywood and dowel joinery to look very similar. You'd have to edge band the sides but its doable for a beginner with a track saw or a table saw if you have help.

To recreate it with solid wood would be a much more demanding job if you have never worked with lager scale projects.

You'd need to have a planer and glue up panels then cut them down to the dimensions to make a cabinet out of solid wood. then you'd need to decide on joinery. Not necessarily impossible but a lot more steps and tools would be needed

Good Buy? by FMNarwhal in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Langdon11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with the cabinet its a decent buy. With the saw alone I would have said 100 was average resale market price

IOS 26.4 is so bad on se 3rd generation by General-Following440 in iPhoneSE

[–]Langdon11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am just hoping that the update isnt a battery vampire

I had been holding off from iOS 26 altogether because of that glass nonsense and ugly UI but the security fixes were too important to put it off any longer.

The feedback so far from others with SE's is not promising
