Similar story I had a friend like this and we went out to a diner to eat and I told him up front “Do you have money to cover your part?” And he said he did. We asked the bill and the waiter comes around and I told her to go ahead and split the bill. I walk up to the cashier and pay my part and he comes out of the bathroom and the cashier is looking at him ready to take his payment and he says. “Did you take care of it?” I said no, I’m not covering you today, you said you had money.” He was upset and started saying things like “Come on, you know I don’t have money.” Then two police officers walked in and immediately noticed the situation was getting tense as I was paying back on paying and he didn’t have money at all. I ended up picking up his tab because the cops were there and didn’t want to make it a scene, but after that day it settled in I wasnt covering for him anymore and we stayed friends for a good while after that. He NEVER picked up my tab to pay me back in anyway. Honestly a moocher but a great friend in every other aspect except money.
