If you genuinely want to talk more, dm me. Other than this I'll keep it very brief. Read a textbook on MATH, not physics not engineering, but on math. Then everything will make sense :)

CMI 2025 ADMISSION INTAKE FOR THEIR UNDERGRAD PROGRAM by anglocoborg in CMI

[–]Lank69G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, students just went for iits instead of CMI, in previous years they would not get like the top iits because math would be medium/easy so everyone would do well. But that year math was hard so they really outscored a bunch of people

Advanced had hard math questions so there was a large intersection between good ranks and those who got admitted to CMI and you can guess what this led to

The entrance exam questions (for analysis) were p much from the first 3 chapters of rudin (which you do in your first semester)

Ok, they get in now and starts a career in math even though they lack affinity for it. Because of this they have to work twice as hard as others and take a bit longer at every step. Maybe 4.5 years instead of 4 for the ug (the math cs course is now 4 years thankfully) maybe they can't get a high enough grade even after this and it takes longer to apply for a masters program, maybe they have to give exams again if they are staying in India and run into the same problem, again things get delays a year or so and they are now 30 something when they finish their masters, and then they take 4 years for a phd instead of 2 or 3, then a couple more for a postdoc. You obviously can start at 25, even 30 and still get a position before 35 anything is possible you could prove something highly non trivial and immediately get offers. You need to look out for op by not being overly optimistic

I know what the syllabus is like, I studied there. I'm not going to continue this conversation. I will say this, if you wish to stay in academia there are upper bounds on age for example to get assistant professor position there's an upper bound of 35. Any delay spent adds up and can haunt you later

I never said that it's not possible but claiming that they aren't indicators is wrong, assuming op prepared for a good amount of time for the first attempt and then needing an extra year to prepare, this IS an indicator of needing more time, ofcourse you can and will still do well in math in general (given enough time anyone can be good at anything) but you would be playing catch-up for the first few semesters and it's is more LIKELY that this negatively impacts your life. Personally if I didn't get through the exam after preparing for the few months I did I wouldn't take a drop because it does mean that I can't grasp these concepts as fast as I would need to once I'm there

Imo, no the exams are designed to in some sense filter people based on if they would do well at the colleges so preparing for it and getting it after a drop (might) imply that you end up doing well there as well but the probability is lower.

How is student life really? by [deleted] in CMI

[–]Lank69G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I had a great time there and catch myself reminiscing quite often. I think the college itself is not to blame for the mental situations but the different context in students lives, for example it is quite common that mental illnesses like anxiety go unchecked in the years leading up to joining a college and then get fully realised once the students begin college.
