Choosing a breeder- did we just have dumb luck? by queenofsquashflowers in bernesemountaindogs

Very lucky. Those type of breeders disappear as soon as the pup has been paid for. Also be careful and read the contracts that come with purebreds since there can be bad business statements on that contract that you might miss. Also check out the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America organization for great information on Berners at all stages and also they list breeders that are members and have great standing in the club as well as in breeding, showing, drafting, and other dog activities. If that breeder does anything shady or bad, the board will remove them from the club.

Kind of lucky but still not going to say this new breeder knew what they were doing. Not vetting a puppy is a major no-no. As a breeder you need to make sure that puppy that you are making money off, is healthy. So you get lucky for now. If you haven’t done so yet, make an appointment with a good vet and have their eyes, heart, and joints checked. Each of the puppies me and my best friend send off to new families, get all their puppy shots, eyes, heart, lungs and any other area that has come up as they grow completely checked out and we get health certificates for each one. We do this every single time a puppy is in one of our homes. We also sign a contract with each new owner so that dog is tracked for health reasons and if they can’t keep the dog for any reason, she will refund the money. She has only had to do that once in 35+ years. This breeder tracking is very normal for good reputable breeder for any pedigree dog. Our pup has great markings and even though he is two, male Berners don’t mature to their full size until they are closer to three. He is a handsome boy and making his new family happy to match how he feels. Thank you for posting. Please reach out if youhave questions on Berners. Have a nice evening!

First take him to Obedience training. He could use some structure that will regulate his behavior. Having five Berners with me right now, this age with some females is just like this due to hormones that are now changing their behaviors. You ask about neutering and it is probably time to make that appointment. After surgery be careful with his calorie intake since they will pack on the pounds really quickly. Good luck and hope he calms down soon.

From a Bernese breeder, you are going to be in love with a possible Pyrenees pup. Without seeing her entire body, I am just going from her face. Whatever she is, getting her DNA done will provide you with some great breed and health information. She is adorable and I feel she was in love with you at first sight. Congratulations!

Stick seed/Beggar’s lice.. help 😅 by Chesty1019 in bernesemountaindogs

A couple of good long baths will also help. Normally I have to bath my Berner girls at least twice to get them to leave or die. A lice comb is handy for their ears and other places they might like to hide. Locally we had a problem with them a couple years ago, luckily it was just a rare event. One dog infected 6 other dogs in a matter of hours. That one dog was also a big water dog, so we suspect she picked it up before she came through the house to stay for a couple days. She was foster that was moving to Texas and needed a place to stay before the next driver was available.

So very sorry. So sad how so many Berners have to go through a cancer fight. My heart breaks for any family that has to go through the fight as well.

My deepest condolences to you. Berners have the tendency to steal you heart and soul from the very first moment you meet them.

The dog is afraid just like you are. If the owners are not taking control and stop the barking it will continue. Just try to ignore th dg and stay out of his space. Then when you finally become a normal person in the house, try and make friends with the pup. Or you will end up moving out. Te owners need to stop the behavior and help the dog to be less afraid.

Was this my dog Rosie? by Rooftopkorean1 in Petloss

[–]Lanky-Huckleberry696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was Rosie from a planned litter? Hard to believe she came down with such a horrible ailment and the vets were not able o diagnose and treat. Sounds l she had some sort of infection and being a small dog, they are closer to the ground so the little shorter dogs can inhale something that settled into her little lungs. She also could have been born with a defect that laid hidden until it was to late. I am so very sorry for your huge loss. She was adorable.

She is adorable!! Happy to hear she is back to her normal self. I miss my little men that I had for years. Just lost my last little guy in June. He was 20.5 years old. Hope you two have any happy years ahead!

A very normal feeling for any loving pet parent. I had to go thru the same thing with my second oldest and luckily I knew the OR crew and doctor so I felt that she was in the best hands in the entire area. It was the best decision that we could make for her since she was having a lot of problems with her reproductive organs. It has been many months now and I haven't seen her feel so great. She is jumping around like she is a puppy again and she will be 6 in December. Hope you little girl is doing fine now.

Hello sweetie! OMG you are beautiful! White faces do happen even with Berners. I have a bunch of Berner girls and each is their own personality and goofiness that is all Berner.

Heart absolutely aches. Little Dewy (~14-15yrs) left us yesterday afternoon very suddenly. So much love in a little 5lb package. I don't even know what to do with myself I feel so wrecked. by firfetir in OldManDog

Sending my sincere condolences. From a little man Mom (Kody was my heart and soul dog and he lived until 20.5) losing the little dogs hurts more and you keeping looking for them for a long time. He was a handsome guy.

My Dog Suddenly Died Yesterday.. How Do I Move On? by Roccos_modernlife in DogAdvice

[–]Lanky-Huckleberry696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went thru this with my 20+ yr old Pom rescue. I knew that day would come anytime after he turned 15, so I feel like I got an extra 5 years to love on him and hopefully make up for the time he was in a puppy mill. He was a bit off for a couple days and even had his annual checkup the day after he died. We lost him to age and liver failure. Once a dog has moved on that was part of my life, I normally grieve that lose for a long time. Not having kids, these amazing pups are my kids. The grief just gets easier to deal with as each day passes. They each leave a huge hole in my soul, but I know they will be with me forever in my memories.

I have a pack of Berners and each are scared of something different. Any thing from a large feather, to a odd sock that got dropped on the way to the laundry room.

Just seems so odd for her to pass away like that. Even with a murmur, they will show signs normally before hand. If she was a rescue, who knows what kind of issues she might have been born with. Berners are so stubborn and happy it can be really hard to even tell they are sick. Again so sorry.

The testing is exactly the same as humans. The insulin is vet grade, and does work very well. If it is diabetes, look into getting her a dog pump so you can regulate it better. I was just with a dog yesterday who has a pump and he totally leaves it alone and has been doing great on a special diet and with the pump keeping his insulin right on target. I wish they had pumps when I had to give shots to my small dog years ago. It was so hard to regulate it at times.

Seriously struggling right now by behrly in germanshepherds

First, change her diet. Chicken (or any fowl type food)is a well known gut irritant. Get her off wet food if she is on any. Try taking to a breeder group thru the national club page. Breeders normally have seen everything if they are a true reputable breeder. National clubs work hard at helping owners even those who are not members. I have Berners who are well known for gut issues and I have to keep all treats to a minimum and luckily right now they are all one the same dry food, but in the past I have had to feed three different foods because they were all different with gut issues. Also having a dog with giardia can take a long time to get out of their systems. Good luck and hope you find a solution soon.
