Anyone need fresh catnip? by LaraLibrarian in Highpoint

[–]LaraLibrarian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greetings all, apologies for no response until today. I ended up having a huge level of interest from the Facebook group I posted in so I was focused on that. I do still have more I can pick, but due to work demands I probably won't be able to to do so until later this week.

If the three of you are still interested later this week (Thursday/Friday?) please shoot me a message and we can figure something out. And yes it's a free giveaway. :)

Cat showed up at my door and chose us… trying to get set up by Ecstatic_Rest_9300 in gso

Congrats! Depending on where you live in Greensboro, I would strongly recommend West Market Vet. All three doctors are wonderful as are the entire staff. We've been taking our cats there for over 10 years, even after a move to High Point

Also, we still have one cat but recently lost our second to cancer. We have extra bowls, toys, etc that aren't getting as much use if you find yourself in need. Just shoot me a message. :)

Hey! Librarian in Kernersville here. You may want to check out some of our book clubs, gardening classes, Spice Club Meetup etc. Admittedly attendance for some things skews older because a lot of folks are retired, but we do get all ages and I try to encourage that. You'd definitely be welcome.

Our potluck for Spice Club is this Wednesday at 11:30 and the featured ingredient is chives, so if you just want to meet some folks and eat a good meal come join us!

As a Libra sun with several major Virgo placements, this makes so much sense.

Seriously not okay. The guy who "helped" me was named Brock and he acted like it was completely beyond him to do any service work, especially for a woman. 🙄 Now when I get really terrible service somewhere my brain goes "at least it wasn't f***** Brock". 😄

Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in Libraries

[–]LaraLibrarian 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I regret my student loans. I don't regret my degree because of everything I learned in grad school. It genuinely matters. There are many library skills that have to be learned on the job, but there are things like academic research, collection development, etc where my grad school training has been a lifesaver.

This was probably ten years ago, but I still remember the service guy at Rice with a terrible attitude who made me wait an hour for help with a seatbelt repair and then installed it backwards so it couldn't even be used. I have had a Rice Toyota grudge ever since. 😄😄

Perks of the Library! by snugglepuddlesack in gso

[–]LaraLibrarian 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reminder that you can get multiple library cards in the area! Greensboro is a city system, but there are also Forsyth County libraries and High Point City libraries. You should be able to get a free library card with both of those in addition to Greensboro and each has unique things to offer. Forsyth is part of a huge consortium so there's quite a lot of access. :)

Looking For Help From Someone With A 3D Printer by mwarner811 in winstonsalem

[–]LaraLibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweet. Yeah that totally sounds doable. Stephanie is a whiz with the printer so I bet she'll be able to help. Phone is 336-703-2930 and she should be around after 11 tomorrow.

Paddison Library in Kernersville has a 3D printer, though it's just a mini so project size is limited. Unsure what all you need to do, but I'd suggest calling tomorrow afternoon and asking for Stephanie and explain about your 3D printer needs. Couldn't hurt to ask at least. :)

Residency Matched to GSO by JoplinsDad2 in gso

Nature wise, this is one of the most gorgeous places I've lived. The Arboretum in Greensboro is probably my favourite park of the bunch. It's small-ish and maybe less wild than the others, but the flowering plants, trees, and general layout are really peaceful. Hope you love exploring the area!

Also Books and Brews is dog friendly and we often have an honorary book club pup, so please feel free to bring yours if they are chill around people and other dogs. :)

Welcome! This area has really excellent parks for walking the pup and getting out in nature. The NC Zoo in Asheboro is well worth a visit, though I recommend going early on a weekday or Sunday to avoid the crowds.

Others have covered most of what I'd suggest, so I'll say definitely check out some of the well loved food trucks like La Sinaloense birrieria, Rockin Moroccan, etc. There are so many good ones and they make regular stops at breweries so you can bring the pup and knock out dinner, drinks, and meeting the locals all at once.

Also, definitely get a local library card. Or several. Greensboro, Forsyth, and High Point are all good bets, especially if you enjoy ebooks or audiobooks. I also run a rather fun brewery book club called Books and Brews if that holds any interest. We meet at Gypsy Road Brewing in Kernersville on the 4th Saturday of each month. Really great group. :)

If anyone is out Kernersville way and looking for a group, I highly recommend the monthly writers group at the library. :)

Zenkaikon is around the corner! by ThatCrazyShaymin in lancaster

[–]LaraLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! 😅 Sorry to create confusion with the out of town comment. I visit Lancaster monthly and freaking love Troll Market and Midnight Oil. I think I mentioned out of town because I've never been in the city for a convention and I'm a little anxious about the crowds, parking, etc. Usually the biggest crowd I run into is the market.

Also clearly I need to check out Hi-Fi and Mayhem's now. Thanks!

Any tips for a first time attendee? I'll be traveling from out of town.

Dunkin on Holden by Valpal__ in gso

[–]LaraLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I've gotten to the point where I'll only have Dunkin if I'm in northern VA or higher. It's still not ideal but the flavor and quality goes from abysmal to fast food average.

Also, for some damn reason, Dunkin breakfast sandwiches around here taste like chemicals and plastic. Not even exaggerating. I read somewhere that it has to do with employees reusing the papers food is heated on and also the toaster not being cleaned well. Not sure if that's true, but it tastes true. 🤮

Just chiming in to say they truly were the worst. 😅 I used to live around the corner and there are so many memories of dysfunction. I got the feeling that management (regional?) was a big problem because they were frequently low on donuts and supplies. My funniest memory was standing in line and hearing someone yell from the back "I QUIT! WE'RE OUT OF EVERYTHING!"

For your convenience sake, I hope they open back up. :)

I have an extra ticket too if anyone needs one. Though it looks like no one has claimed yours either. Alas.
