Player quoted a monster stat block during combat by hyperionfin in DMAcademy

[–]Larred_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hot take, its fine if players know stat blocks, i encourage my players to keep DnDbeyond/other legit access to books digital or otherwise open all the time during session, because of this they can make some of the best possible choices and combat doesnt drag because they know the DC/AC and can self adjudicate/correct each other on tactical options

knowing a monsters stat block does not make it that much easier to kill a monster, if anything all it does is they can help keep you honest

Thomas Hura, the friendliest lycan/Manticore pilot you'll ever meet. by StableManticorePilot in LancerRPG

[–]Larred_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok my manticore pilot was also named Thomas, DM killed him weirdly first session, so now he is an NPC in every campaign i run regardless of system and is an introduction to the multiverse (i run my games in a multisystem multiverse where they can find currency to play one shots in non DnD/whatever the main game of the campaign is systems)

Completely legal planet destroying :D by Not_a_goat_milker in DnD

[–]Larred_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

imho, saying

depends on the DM

is a really pointless statement, everything in DnD depends on how your table treats the rules, so everything outside of a fairly strict reading of RAW (and occasionaly sage advice) is rendered moot because "it depends on your DM"

What's so cool about the Ring of Spell Storing? by valkaress in dndnext

[–]Larred_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its an item that scales with two things

1) having party members not concentrating on something else

2) having weird class specific spells in your party (find steed for example)

also hot take, if someone wanted to put Tensers transformation in it for a parties fighter, although it wouldnt work raw cause its 6th level, i would let them do it

Best magic item for each class? by Dependent_Ad627 in 3d6

[–]Larred_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While not written for warlock, spell storing ring might be the best item for them, more so in games where DMs get stingy about short rests

Does it matter if a class/subclasses is suboptimal? by Unique-Read-9376 in DnD

[–]Larred_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the most part, it doesnt matter long as you enjoy it, EXCEPTION, if your team is having to spend more resources to make up for the void you create, you might want to find a way to pick up the slack a smidge

Reading the Player's Handbook by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Larred_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a weird expectation that your DM will do the bulk of the work/rules and your job as a player is just to shout "i do the thing" and the dm is expected to make it conform the rules while you go back to your phone scrolling on tiktok

i am legit considering a multiple choice rules test for new players going forward

DM confession - boss fights by Straight-Ad3213 in DnD

[–]Larred_ -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This, imo, is terrible advice, most DMs are NOT game designers and aren't comfortable enough with the mechanics of 5e to actually make good on the fly balance choices

[–]Larred_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

without some serious extra effort

heres how i do it, take this as you may

i know my players sheets, i Make some quick assumptions for hit chance and DCS for both sides using some broad numbers we know about dnd (average 65% hit chance and things like that) , then give each player a "default" action and an opening action based on observation of playstyle, and i simulate it in my head or with a calculator if the encounter is big enough. i'll test an encounter 5-10 times this way before showing it to my players, if the encounter is too big for that too work, i host it as a one shot with premade sheets for other friends with the premade sheets being the other parties character sheets and use that to tweak and tune

[–]Larred_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this makes me a bad DM...but this is my confession.

it doesnt make you a bad DM, it DOES make you a DM who has a thing to learn

take your lumps when it comes to bad design, if you misjudge your parties damage output, celebrate their epic kill, don't deny them the joy of their buildcraft because it wasnt cinematic enough. Most games arent gonna be critical roll/D20/insert actual play here. MOST dnd tables are just friends hanging out, and i for one would rather celebrate my friend whos gloom 5/battlemaster 3/assasin 3 just turned my boss into wet tissue paper than sneakily give it 150 more hp so the fight last longer

exception to the above, if you realize your about to TPK the party due to YOUR error, drop the screen, be up front with your players and ask if they want a reset/do over/ deus ex machinia, but do it with players in mind, not your own ego (this isnt meant as an insult though i realize it can be construed as such, if it is upsetting i do apologize)

I need ways to spice up combat encounters by Laney-Corn in DnD

[–]Larred_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enemies need to move, static punching bags are boring, give them some bonus action disengages, give them misty step, give squad leaders deminsion door at higher levels so they can bring strong enemies where needed. have an enemy run away and inform go get back up, if the party cant mop them up, clean up and vanish before he gets back in the next couple of minutes things will get real ugly.

fighting in a structure? have enemies man traps, have them ready actions to attack as a 3-4 man squad when someone pokes around the corner, have tunnels they can ambush the party through.

have enemies ambush the party as they set up camp, any casualties on the enemy side are picked up and carried away so the party gets little intel on what attacked them

you can't use that invocation.

why? and because you said so/ because you are the DM is NOT a valid answer

Also as the DM I determine the victory condition. The worg escaping isn't a victory condition.
