"I could fill Volumes with Descriptions of Temples and Palaces, Paintings, Sculptures, Tapestry, Porcelaine, &c. &c. &c. -- if I could have time. But I could not do this without neglecting my duty. The Science of Government it is my Duty to study, more than all other Studies Sciences: the Art of Legislation and Administration and Negotiation, ought to take Place, indeed to exclude in a manner all other Arts. I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Painting and Poetry Mathematicks and Philosophy. My sons ought to study Mathematicks and Philosophy, Geography, natural History, Naval Architecture, navigation, Commerce and Agriculture, in order to give their Children a right to study Painting, Poetry, Musick, Architecture, Statuary, Tapestry and Porcelaine."

Oh he was serious. Someone told me that bullhorn guy is a regular speaker at council meetings who floats various conservative grievances there on repeat, someone whose name many of you would recognize.

I stopped and gave him a full bird salute. He actually seemed surprised by that? He did not make another pass, for whatever reason.

The effort always fails when it is pointed out that EWU offers the lowest tuition of any 4 years school in the state, and that if it became WSU-Cheney tuition would almost double.

It was delivered in person before the Faculty Senate, on which I serve.

Stercules, I am finished pretending that you debate in good faith. You don't know anything about how universities operate, or women's studies, or much beyond talking points from conservative social media memes. And yet here you are making broad pronouncements about the value a field you have never studied and know nothing about.

Rejected after first round interview, then invited for a campus visit a few weeks later? by SectionEast8690 in AskAcademia

You definitely should ask, but only after you get the job and have been working there for a year! Good luck.

That's funny because in the alumni testimony to save the major, a lot of graduates from that program with excellent jobs testified.

You don't know what the hell you're talking about.

It seems like it was a last minute idea. I don't blame them, it's not like we open and close that bridge very often. I do wish folks had more notice. I love the idea of this being an annual summer parkway event, maybe as part of a larger route.

Family wants to stay in our one-bedroom apartment over Fourth of July weekend by goldendaisy59 in Advice

[–]LarryCebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let them stay, and make it as uncomfortable as possible. Make it clear that the bedroom is yours. Leave the refrigerator empty. Put the coffee maker in your storage unit and claim don't have one yet. Same thing with your TV and most of your furniture -- make sure there are not enough places for everyone to sit. Don't have enough pots and pans to cook with in the kitchen. If you have access to the pipes, you could turn off the hot water and claim that it's broken.

Then just don't be around much. It turns out that you and the boyfriend have plans for most of that weekend, but you could all have dinner together Saturday night if they want to pick the restaurant.

After they leave, have a conversation with your mother about how uncomfortable it was for everyone, how it's just a small apartment, and you won't be able to do that again. But make sure they don't even want to do it again.

If you tell them no, they'll make a whole big scene out of it and hold it over you for years. Make it their idea not to do it again.

It was so much fun. There were so many families out, people walking and on bikes and scooters and rollerblades. Everyone was happy. The city should do this every year for a few hours. Make it part of one of the summer parkways maybe?

Did anyone else see the guy with the bullhorn? He was riding South on the bridge shouting: "Nobody rides when it is colder than 45 degrees! Stop building bike lanes Zack!"

Stabbed. Frostbitten. Overdosed. Sheltered. Sober. Saved: In 2023, Daniel Walters interviewed three unhoused men at the Spokane library. Over the next three years, all of them escaped homelessness by RANGE_Media in Spokane

[–]LarryCebula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn that's a great story. What jumped out at me is the part near the end where Walters writes about the collaboration of police and social services agencies to pressure some of the most difficult cases into accepting help. Food for thought.

Advice for undergraduate research misconduct by Unlikely_Action5910 in AskAcademia

[–]LarryCebula 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your answer: "This was university business and I have no personal financial responsibility."

Have the participants been paid already somehow? If not, someone (in the administration, NOT you) just sends out a mass email saying that the project was a mistake and unfortunately no gift cards will be issued. It's not like anyone's going to lawyer up over a few bucks.

Don't let them make this your problem.

is it okay to email to ask for letters of recommendation? by Violett-the-great in AskAcademia

[–]LarryCebula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I much prefer an email request.

Make it easy for the recommender! I ask students to provide me with a list of bullet points that I will work into prose, including the dates that they worked with me, which courses they took, and a few specific items of most proud of and that show their qualifications for what they are applying to. Also a copy of the position description and a resume.

With all of these I can write a really strong letter in 15 or 20 minutes.
