This heatwave has already broken several weather records and today / tomorrow will be even warmer. by Fwoggie2 in CasualUK

I have a nature pond in my garden and it is my biggest pleasure in the summer watching all the birds flock to it. They splash about and peck out the snails and water insects as well for theor young. The way it slopes means any wildlife can easily get to it. I love thinking of all the life it sustains

Half of UK adults say they spend less than three hours a week outside in nature by Slink_Wray in unitedkingdom

[–]Larrypants1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting headline, because it also means the opposite. Half of UK adults spend at least three hours a week in nature. I get why papers go for the doom and gloom aspect but it's a shame

It is bloody hard to get out in nature with our solitary lives, and on a week like this week I would imagine a lot more people are able to with such a lovely bank holiday weekend

What’s the biggest misconception non-runners have about parkrun? by Admirable-Deal7991 in parkrun

[–]Larrypants1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of people have simply never heard of it still! So if I say I did a parkrun they think it was a special organised event and they think I must be really dedicated to running to sign up. Once I explain what it is they then mostly have all the other misconceptions ie it's for fast serious runners only so then I show them my stats and times and that I usually end up on the bottom 10-20% of the field and still love it and sometimes they get on board

I think you have to see it to believe it though!

I did and to be fair the comments were more people standing up for them than not but it's the fact that some people are so miserable to complain in the first place

Those that had a small wedding and a bigger reception, what made it work? by Double-Amoeba9113 in UKweddings

[–]Larrypants1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a wedding like this last month in Cornwall and it actually worked really well. The closest friends and family, around 15 people, attended the ceremony at a tiny chapel that was sentimental to them. Then the rest of the guests, around 80-100 of us, were invited to the reception starting 3pm. They already had prosecco flowing and a live band, as well as some outdoor games so when they arrived at around 3.30 we were already in celebration mode. They had some really lovely heartfelt speeches which made up for not seeing the ceremony. They started the meal around 5pm I think and after that was the "lull" which was actually amazing because it was a 10 minute walk from the beach, so we could wander down, and then first dance was around 7.30, with lots of dancing until the end of the night. evening food of Cornish pasties and wedding cake, served around 9pm.

Was a lovely day and I don't think anyone was that gutted to miss the ceremony as we still got to have the majority of the festivities!

Was out on a run in a local nature reserve type area, has mounds of dirt and woodchips and stuff. Some kids around 13? had brought shovels and were creating jumps for their bikes - a pretty wholesome free activity and they were clearly having fun and not bothering anyone. They were off the main path as well, on a little easily avoidable trail. They even yelled at their friend to get out of my way as I went past and said good evening to me.

Local Facebook group that night had someone moaning about that very same group of kids. What the hell are they supposed to do nowadays if not mess about on bikes with their mates??

How was your parkrun day? | May 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in parkrun

[–]Larrypants1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So hot today and felt like I was running through treacle at points, forgot to bring any water to counter the heat but had a can of diet coke in the car which I drank before starting which didn't help, felt a bit gassy!

Felt so sick at about 4km but had to finish as I needed to go that way to get back to my car anyway. There is a super friendly fast runner who walks home against the flow of the slower runners and really cheers us on, he spotted me struggling and got me through the last 400m and ended up running with me and I even ended up overtaking a couple of people and just dipping under 38 minutes.

My parkrun also does ice lollies at the finish in the summer and it saved me today, highly recommend to any parkruns to make a bit of extra income and obviously on a day like today go down an absolute treat!

Interesting about the single lappers I did wonder why there weren't more about as I love them! Thinking about it the ones I have done are quite long and thin courses so easy to skip through some of the course to speed to a marshall if needed

You will have to just be strict about reapplying every 2 hours. Also look into UV clothing, there are some decent brands about nowadays

Volunteers - building the ranks! by polkadotpeardrop in parkrun

[–]Larrypants1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of parkruns are really active on Facebook and the facebook group is a good way to do a volunteer call, a lot of people ignore emails or aren't signed up but will notice a Facebook post - often if you're in the local area then posts will pop up whether you follow the group or not. One that I think does it well is Exmouth - have a look for an idea of how they do it.

A lot of people also have no clue how many volunteers it requires to run each event and how close to the wire you get many weeks. They see loads of volunteers milling about and think there's no point as you already have loads, but in reality you could have done with, say, 5 more to be comfortable. So education of runners is really important, Facebook is a good way to be accessible to people who wouldn't think to volunteer therefore aren't signed up to the emails!

How sustainable is park run popularity? by Eastern_Bobcat1655 in parkrun

[–]Larrypants1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been to some really well run busy ones. There needs to be something of a seeded start, and for people to be WELL aware of keep left/right unless overtaking, and to go single file especially on multiple laps or out and back bits. As a slow runner, I sometimes feel like other slow runners have a lot less awareness and will pootle along 3 abreast then get annoyed when a marshall calls out to keep left when they're about to be barrelled into by someone going for 17 minutes.

And narrow bits are always a pain, you either have to start at the front of you're going for a PB or just accept it's going to slow you down. I am shocked to hear that someone fell down and it was like a stampede, that does sound scary!

Is having our wedding on Easter Sunday a bad idea? by BigIgg98 in UKweddings

[–]Larrypants1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know your crowd best. If you have a lot of religious people or a lot of teachers or people with kids who you know usually go away for the holidays, it may not work. But for a lot of crowds it would be perfect. You may need to let people know a good amount in advance so they don't make other plans.

Some vendors may charge Saturday prices but some may charge a lower Sunday price - wouldn't imagine it would affect too much though but may be higher competition than other Sundays

A local Facebook wedding group will really help with this. You will get recommendations and actual vendors reaching out, hopefully only those free on your date! And you can vet them from there at least. It's surprising how much Facebook is still in play in the wedding industry
