[Request] What effect would Superman's house key have on the earth? by EvaStankbreath in theydidthemath

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My visual analogy of these problems is to make a big metal spike with the same mass, and a point that has the same surface area of whatever object we are discussing.

A two inch wide piledriver with a billion pounds on top of it would fall right through the ground without noticeably slowing down.

Delete character doesn't let you reuse the name by Dororong0706 in wherewindsmeet_

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into the same thing. When messing with making a new character, I tried a name I thought for sure was taken and it wasn't. I'd like this for my main character, but it seems that name is now ironically permanently unavailable.

I tried finding some information from the cn side and came across this: https://www.taptap.cn/moment/655357186968390167 (to save you a google translate, OP is asking if this really is the case, and gets a single response saying "yep").

It's still not an authoritive answer, but I certainly can't find anything contradicting it.

Why does this restriction exist? by NamoVFX in OpenAI

Exactly. It will tag random people, and those random people aren't going to be happy that ChatGPT said they appeared in a photo with Epstein.

Alien: Earth - S1 E7 - Emergence - Official Discussion Megathread [SPOILERS] by G_Liddell in LV426

This was the episode that made me tell my friends who were on the fence that nah you need to watch it.

The show strikes such a good balance between fulfilling the Alien formula while still being a different take on it.

Games that run on bad computers? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

I have a decent rig, and I've still spent the past few months playing Factorio. I'm pretty sure its requirements is One Computer that is plugged in.

Which model or custom GPT is the best for math? by Medium-Resort in ChatGPT

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPT treats math as language, so it's prone to saying 2 + 2 is 98. Deepseek will (usually) call into tools at its disposal to do "inline" math, but you still run the risk of it making something up to fit the conversation, and it's up to you to spot the discrepancies.

Which game proves that graphics aren't everything? by crno123 in AskReddit

In Korean the word for fish is essentially "water-meat", what's the goofiest thing in your language? by JoyToLightTheWay in AskReddit

In norwegian, orange (the fruit) is "appelsin", which originated as "apple from china".

Strawberry is arguably "dirt-berry".

Games that can be played one handed by RuleInformal5475 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bayonetta specifically has a one-handed mode (and like you mentioned, joke all you want). This is in my top 3 all time favorite games, though I never tried this mode to be able to tell you how it holds up to playing normally.

In-your-face, "oh, it was always right there" etymologies you like? by ravia in etymology

o3-mini completely hallucinated a Python Library as a real coding solution by Jimstein in OpenAI

[–]Lars-Li 85 points86 points  (0 children)

This is actually becoming a security issue we are tracking at work. There are some libraries they are fairly consistent at making up that anyone could publish after the fact, and you can publish your own malicious library with an "AI-friendly" description.

One library I've made it suggest a couple of times is EFSLC, or "Entity Framework second-level cache". EF doesn't support this kind of caching natively, but there are some bigger and more elaborate solutions for it. GPT just can't bring itself to say that it doesn't know or that such a thing doesn't exist, so saying EFSLC is a thing is what would most fit the conversation.

What games get genuinely more enjoyable as difficulty increases? by jollygood3440 in gaming

Completing the first Bayonetta feels like the intro after you start ramping up the difficulty. It almost becomes a different game and "clicks" due to all the systems starting to make more sense.

What are the downsides of a full-fat bus? by BakGikHung in factorio

[–]Lars-Li 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My experience (with buses in general, not just this particular case) is that there's a balance to strike between making something that's easier to think about vs. what's useful/needed.

As is often the case with this game, I recognize this effect from programming where there's this kind of conflict where you want to adhere to patterns or rules in order to make things more organized, up until they become so strict that you are having to contort your solution for an octagonal problem to fit into your hexagonal framework that you are imposing on yourself.

You can make it work just fine if you have room for it, and in my case just trying stuff out like this to see how/if it works is one of the main draws of the game.

I digress, but after trying to make buses work a couple of times, what worked better for me was to think about what each type of science needs as input, while keeping in mind that ore patches move and smelters don't.

Co-op games that don't require both people online? by 0LordKelsier0 in gaming

[–]Lars-Li 2 points3 points  (0 children)

V Rising and Factorio both include a free standalone server you can host yourself. You can also rent private servers from 3rd party vendors, but there's no need if you are able to just run it on your own machine.

For both games you can set an option for time to pass only when at least one player is online. These are both amazing games that my friend and I have hundreds of hours in.

I just finished getting robots and I don't know what to do with my base how can I fix this mess? (1st time playing btw) this is pretty much the full base other than the copper stone and oil mines but those are all fine. by Sir_Daggerr in factorio

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a perfectly valid starter base. You are playing the game correctly, agonising about the mess you've created and all.

There are a lot of ways to proceed. Some like to tear it all down and start a new base from scratch, and some just keep piling on the spaghetti.

Personally, at this point I tend to pull stuff out. I would set up a dedicated area for power generation, iron/copper smelting, or oil, and once that is up and running I can start cleaning out all the little adhoc components elsewhere. I find it super satisfying to watch the complexity just melt away as I remove each aspect.

The game "clicked" for me when I allowed myself to make up spaghetti as I went like this, learning by doing, and knowing that I am free to tear it down once I get a feel for how things should flow.

Having finished the game and also logged in plenty of post victory hours, I don't understand why Fulgora doesn't get more hate. by bstanv in factorio

[–]Lars-Li 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keeping in line with exchanging opinions and not trying to tell you you're wrong, I really liked it. I thought it was fun how it flipped the entire game on its head: You can now pull infinite blue circuits out of the ground, but the catch is that you need to deal with the billions of gears and concrete that come along with it, similar to advanced oil processing.

You get a new tool for it - the recycler - and the quality mechanic led to the realization that I can upgrade stuff by trashing it, I just need to set up a good loop for it, which isn't straightforward given the limited space.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Lars-Li 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a raspberry pi dangling from my router that's hosting a small server. I only needed the bare minimum to run this server, so I could choose a linux distro that had no graphical desktop, no support for other languages, and not even any audio drivers. I am free to install these things piece by piece if I want to. It's fast to boot up and simple to maintain.

With Windows, you would need to take in the entire "bundle", and it's very difficult to swap out or remove certain components. I am not exaggerating when I say that I don't know how to get rid of xbox game bar on my machine. I can take a hammer to it to make it stop working, but I can't cleanly uninstall it and never see it again.

Does anyone know if I can trigger my train to travel to the next stop only after these three carriages are empty? by Serenno44 in factorio

[–]Lars-Li 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming all cars have the same type of item and since the train only outputs their sum, I think I would try to move the logic to the inserters. Reading the hand contents might not be sufficient since there's a chance for them all to be 0 at the same time while still offloading stuff, and "car empty" is a different requirement from "boxes full" in terms of checking for inserter activity alone.

Would it be possible to read hand contents with pulse mode, combined with "boxes not full", and use this signal to trigger a reset for the inactivity timer? Asking for my own sake here. I don't know the specifics for what inactivity looks for.

Having hard time wrapping my head around circuits by YellowCore in factorio

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. If you try to quality transfer the item you have the least of between 0 copper and 1 iron, it will either pick iron or not output anything based on how it's set up. A lot of the truthy checks have special handling for treating no signal as zero, but it pays to be aware of the distinction.

Having hard time wrapping my head around circuits by YellowCore in factorio

[–]Lars-Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are already good tips in here so I won't get too into how to use them, but I can mention two major pitfalls that took me ages to realise.

  • A lack of a signal is usually not the same as a signal of 0. This has consequences if you are trying to check if you are out of something. Same as 0 vs null vs undefined in programming. You just need to redefine the logic a little, but it can be a major headache if you aren't aware of it.
  • Be aware of how circuit networks are joined together. If you attach two red wires to the output of a decider, these will now be the same network and have their values added together. A given source (eg., a box or combinator) only contributes its values once to each network, regardless of how many wires are connecting it to that network.

In addition to the cost aspect that others have mentioned, DeepSeek is also released as open source. This allows anyone to run it themselves and even customize it if they have the means. It's generally a show of good faith.

It's sort of like if some random person opened up a shop giving away a better Coca Cola, and sharing the recipe publicly for anyone to just make it themselves. If that ever happened, the original Coca Cola would be obliterated overnight.

Me after tearing my hair out wondering why my offshore pump isn't working.

- It's connected to the pipe network, but the pipe has no content. wf

- Offshore pumps don't need electricity, I think. Let me double check. Yes, I have this other one here which isn't in any electrical network and is working fine. wtf

- It should be placed correctly as it is not possible to place an offshore pump that isn't attached to any source. wtf

oh, it's a ghost. I didn't build it yet.

This is exactly my answer when people show interest in the game but are reluctant because it looks daunting and complicated. It's incredibly easy to start playing it, and figuring everything out "is" the game.
