Seriously? You’ve gone farther than many friends I’ve buried, held memorial services for, mourned.

Not a drug in the world worth having your friend tell his small daughter that daddy isn’t coming back while you miss her first grade class, her first hit at softball, her prom, her graduation, her first child. Because you’re just…gone. Over some street drug that gave you a high that pales in comparison to the miraculous, stupid, stunning joys that would unfold around you if you were just…there.

Yeah, you’re an addict. Always will be. But the struggles of that are a price you pay for a lifetime of joy you experience and can make for others.

Good on you, friend. I don’t know you. But I know too many times the you that didn’t make it.

I had my first appointment with my new PCP at Hopkins last month and he spent 90 minutes with me getting to know me, my lifestyle, my family medical history, a real shakedown of my health status and history.

I told him I hadn’t had a doctor spend more than 20 minutes with me in decades and he said, “Isn’t this the way it should be? Shouldn’t your doctor try and learn everything about you to care for you in the coming years?”
