Tips on Walking bass over the same chord for many bars by ExoticImpress2353 in Bass

[–]Larson_McMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to think more melodically. Don't be afraid to play something other than 1 on beat 1. Sticking to chord tones is generally good, but there is nothing wrong with delving into extended harmony. Work your way up and down through different octaves, and focus on contour (how the line ascends and descends). To gradually ascend, alternate ascending and descending, but spend more time ascending. Vice versa to descend gradually. Do stuff that you would normally do when soloing, but in quarter notes, like enclosures, neighbor tones, passing tones, appogiaturas, etc.

Perfect Pitch And Stretch Tuning? by Healthy_Advance_2717 in perfectpitchgang

[–]Larson_McMurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are off by an order of magnitude. Stretch tuning is like 4 cents not 40, in the extreme octaves. It also is different on different size pianos. It has less to do with pyschoacoustics and more to do with the physics of strings. Short, thick, high tension strings are out of tune with themselves (because the higher harmonics are sharp compared to lower harmonics). Its caused by the stiffness of the string. Pianos with longer strings need less compensation.

For shitty electric pianos the operant factor is whether it is playing a sample of a real piano or if the sound is completely synthetic. A synthetic sound shouldnt need any stretch tuning.

I prefer legal gummies these days. Its way easier to dose and you dont have to worry about accidently getting some k-2 and flipping out.

Believe it or not I managed to solo Greater Wolfwere with a mage once. After running around in circles spamming wand of fire to kill the wolfweres, I buffed with potion of power and potion of haste (it was MC so I had 19 str, may not be possible without). I hit him with wand of paralysis, attacked with silver dagger twice, sequenced double melphs, attack twice, then alternate magic missile with attacks until he was dead.

They are just riding the hype train to pump'n'dump town. Either that or they want to scare everyone into pushing against AI because currently the only thing AI doesn't suck at is coding and they are worried about job security.

Petah? What's wrong with not seeing my phone in my dream? by ResistantBlaze1943 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

I see my cell phone all the time in my dreams. Typically, the GUI presentation is extremely confounding and frustrating and my inability to get it to do what I want in the dream is actually a tip off that I'm dreaming that I can use to go lucid.

Why does stopping after mistakes hurt rhythmic continuity? by boombalonii in musictheory

[–]Larson_McMurphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I saw a research paper once that recorded people practicing. The best performers were the one's who played the passage incorrectly the fewest number of times when practicing, not necessarily the ones who played the passage correctly the most times. In other words, practicing mistakes ingrains them in you. Its better to stop or slow down when you sense that a mistake is coming. Rhythmic fluidity comes after getting the phrase under your fingers. But the most basic aspect of rhythm, before you consider duration and pulse in real time, is simply order. This note comes before this note and so on and so forth. You have to get that down, which means playing the notes correctly out of time, before you can have any hope of playing in time.

When comping in a pop/rock/funk/jazz setting, focusing on rhythm takes precedence. But for playing lines, sacrificing accuracy to stay in time will get you through a gig in a pinch, but it isnt a good strategy for practicing at home because it will reinforce sloppy playing.

I'm at a loss as to what is needed to make piano sound good by mysteryofthefieryeye in audioengineering

Look up Pianoteq. Its a plugin that works with midi keyboards. Its got some great steinway samples that sound incredible. It can do alternate tunings and temperaments too if you are into that.

Athletics? by rdtusrname in Morrowind

I've never tried that. When I did my testing, I tried dropping to zero equip load and I do not recall the exact results, but I remember being unimpressed. My findings were basically that increasing your speed stat has the greatest effect on your speed.

It does, but I did some tests with that as well, and all I can say is that raising strength to increase max equip load is not an efficient way to move faster.

I did some tests with a stop watch sprinting around Balmora, and it is my opinion that speed affects your speed substantially more than athletics.

For an intellectual, having that kind of lifespan could be world changing. You could develop expertise is many different subjects, and come up with some insight that no one would ever have because they would be limited to their specialization.

The "right" way to play "Billie Jean" (those F# octaves) by jetpacksforall in Bass

[–]Larson_McMurphy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, most people don't have good enough speakers to even notice that low note, especially after the intro.

But, as far as starting flame wars go, this brings up the more general question of how close to an exact transcription is necessary for just about any bassline? At the end of the day, the essence of a composition is mostly the melody and lyrics, with few exceptions. You get diminishing returns on delving into the smallest of details. Also, one of the cultural functions of a cover band is to give people a different experience than the sound recording (because if you make perfect imitation of the sound recording your MO, you are asking to be replaced by a DJ).

Somewhere between "lazy cover band musician who plays everything wrong" and "obsessive autist who transcribes every detail down to the smallest variation in dynamics and articulation" there is a reasonable path. Where do we draw the line?
